HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-02-08Historical Preservation Committee Minutes February 8, 2016 CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman, Barbara Collier, called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. The meeting was held at the Mary Lib Saleh Library, 201 N. Ector Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Faye Stinneford, Don Martin, Helen Voss, Gary Parker, Bill Byers, Robert Nail, Iris Elliott, Weldon Cannon, Bill Golden, Doris Brown, Mavy Wright, Leon Hogg, Marilyn Long, Barbara Collier, Helen Payton, Norma Lively, Joe Cannon, Mary Lib Saleh and Michelle Burger. VISITORS PRESENT Linda Pool STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bill Byers made a correction to item #2 on page 2; it should say a Tennessee Dairy Fan was acquired instead of a Can. Don Martin made a motion to approve the minutes with the correction. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $12,028.89. There were expenditures of $76.58 for pens for the South Euless Elementary School art project. There was a deposit of $32.02, leaving a current balance of $11,984.33. ITEMS FOR APPROVAL 1. Museum Programs: a. Approval to allow Publicity/Program Task Force Sub -Committee to plan appropriate programs to be performed on Open House Saturdays at the Museum. These programs can vary from music to historical talks to display of artwork to contests for children. Since these programs are developed and advertised to encourage attendance at the Museum, the Publicity/Program Task Force will be responsible for finding presenters and making arrangements of these programs. They will rely on Committee members to make suggestions and recommendations for programs. To show appreciation and to help cover their expenses, Committee approved (January 2016 meeting) that $50 be donated for each program. HPC MTG 031416 Page 1 • A discussion was held regarding the above item. Bill Golden indicated that the purpose of the art contest was to draw visitors to the Museum and not to the Library. Various members had a few questions regarding the event. • After a brief discussion, Weldon Cannon made a motion to approve statement "a" as written. Faye Stinneford seconded the motion. No one opposed, motion approved. b. Discussion of the suggested programs for 2016. These are Euless Historical Drawing Contest 4th Grade South Euless students, Mike and Leland Brown singing, Euless Historical Trees presentation by Andy Weinzapfel, display of wedding dresses of different decades, a Revolutionary War Soldier, with artifacts and the great -great grandson of Quanah Parker to speak and to display artifacts. • Various members had some questions about the planned programs. Weldon Cannon suggested allowing the Publicity/Program Task Force Sub -Committee to plan upcoming events and programs. • After a brief discussion, Weldon Cannon made a motion to approve statement "b" as well as allow the Sub -committee to make decisions pertaining to the program. Faye Stinneford seconded the motion. No one oppose, motion approved. c. In December 2015 the Committee approved up to a $500 allowance for the Euless Historical Drawing Contest 4th Grade South Euless students. These expenses would include paper, pens and costs of a Reception on February 14, 2016 at the Library for the students and families. • Item "c" was approved at the January 11, 2016 meeting. d. In addition to Andy doing a presentation about Historical Trees, he will begin an ongoing project. Euless Parks and Community Service department is excited about this program and will work closely with Andy. Andy will need a small budget initially for supplies, i.e. Poster board, paper, etc. Need approval of a $50 budget for any expenses Andy might have. • Weldon Cannon made a motion to approve items "d" as written. Helen Voss seconded the motion. No one opposed, motion carried. 2. Speakers at Meetings a. Do we want to continue having informative speakers at meetings? We will ask them to limit time to 15 minutes. b. We will not necessarily have a speaker at every meeting. Only when an issue warrants it or suggestions are made by the Committee. c. Do we want to offer an appreciation gift for meeting speakers? Ornament, sun catcher, other? Should we pursue? We will need three volunteers to review items in materials provided by Suzanne and make decision on a gift. • With regards to items "a", "b" and "c": The Committee decided not to have a speakers at every meeting and each speaker should be given a time limit. • The Publicity/Programs/Speaker Committee will make decisions about Speakers. • Barbara Collier asked Helen Voss, Faye Stinneford and Mavy Wright to choose appropriate gifts for speakers and to bring recommendations to the Committee. HPC MTG 031416 Page 2 • Marilyn Long made a motion to approve items "a", "b" and "c" including having a Sub -Committee to oversee various aspects of the program. Faye Stinneford seconded the motion. No one opposed, motion approved. 3. Reappointment of Doris Brown as Treasurer a. Gary Parker made a motion to approve Doris Brown as Treasurer for the Committee. Don Martin seconded the motion. All were in favor, motion approved. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports / Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. There were over 30 people with the Irving Church that visited in January, 2016. The donor of the Himes Log House was a part of the group. b. A sign up list was handed out for docents for both the February and March open houses. 2. Acquisitions—Bill Byers will be meeting with Glenn Walker this week. Mr. Walker wants to donate various items to the Committee. 3. Library Display—Marilyn Long is still working on the project. 4. Website \ Facebook—Bill Golden noted several local Facebook pages that are not only great avenues for advertising historical programs but also have great Euless history information. 5. Heritage Park—No Report. 6. Local Historical Marker—Weldon Cannon reported that the Euless Markers for the Arch Cannon and Ross Cannon homes have been installed one on each side of the Texas State Historical Marker across from South Euless Elementary School. Mr. Cannon invited the members to take a look at them when they're in the area. 7. Publicity—Barbara Collier a. Suggested combining the Publicity Committee, the Website / Facebook Committee and the Publicity / Program Task Force Sub -Committee into one Sub -Committee. Everyone was agreeable to the suggestion. b. Asked everyone to put out their yard signs advertising open house. c. Mary Lib Saleh reported on the Art Contest for the South Euless Elementary students. Judging will be done on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. Some of the members will hang the art works after today's meeting. Mrs. Saleh invited everyone to attend the event on Sunday and attend open house on Saturday. The winning drawing will be framed and displayed at the Museum for a year. She thanked everyone for their support of the program. 8. Plaque—No report. 9. Display Signs—No report. HPC MTG 031416 Page 3 10. Oral History \ Photography—Barbara Collier reminded the Committee that Gary Fieldsend needs help with the oral history interviews if anyone wanted to help him. 11. Artifact Recovery—No Report. 12. Historical Albums—Homer and Edith Fuller's photos will be acquired for display at the Fuller House. 13. Texas State Historical Marker Application—Bill Golden a. Weldon Cannon reported that a Texas State Historical Marker titled "Nineteenth Century Education" has been approved to be installed at the Sikh Temple property. The Sikh agreed to pay for the marker. Mr. Cannon credited Andy Weinzapfel's persistence and helping to move the work on the acquisition of the marker. b. Robert Nail remembered stories about Iva's dad and his brother when they attended this school. Mr. Nail told a story about the Fuller brothers throwing a snake through an open shutter while children were in class. The members thought the story very entertaining. c. Mr. Nail might may have seen an old photo of the school and he will look for the photo. d. Bill Golden has seen old newspaper clippings that mentioned the school. An article said the school had one teacher to 100 students and that a new school needed to be built. STAFF REPORT 1. The Board and Commission Dinner will be on Monday, February 22, 2016. Members need to RSVP to the City Secretary's Office. 2. Arbor Daze will be downsized greatly this year. It will be held at the Midway field on Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 10am to 9pm. The Euless Family Life Center will be closed. The Committee will not do a display at Arbor Daze. 3. Andy Weinzapfel will be doing a Historic Tree presentation at the Tree Giveaway area during Arbor Daze. The Committee will attend the event in support of Mr. Weinzapfel and hand out materials to visitors. 4. Robbie Rodgers, the City's Program Coordinator, suffered a stroke a few weeks ago. He is out of work until further notice. Suzanne Hendrickson has had to move to the Euless Family Center to work on summer programs, oversee the day to day operation of the Rec Center as well as perform her current duties. Donations are being accepted to help the Rodgers family at this time if anyone is interested. COMMITTEE / OTHER REPORTS 1. Marilyn Long reported that Robert Weiser visited the Museum recently and he has photos of himself and his ancestors he would like to donate to be displayed at the Museum. Members of the Committee were very happy with the report since the Weiser's were a big part of the local history. HPC MTG 031416 Page 4 2. Norma Keplinger called the City and resigned from the Historical Preservation Committee. Ms. Keplinger hadn't been able to attend a historical meeting in years. Members present felt that other members on the Committee who have not attended a meeting in years could also resign from the Committee so they can be removed as well. 3. The Sub -Committee list will be updated and given to the members in the future. 4. The Committee's Project List will be updated. A copy will be kept at the Museum so that during workdays, members can look on the list and work on the projects listed without having to wait for instructions. The regular workdays are every Wednesday from 10am to noon. 5. Don Martin reported that several new streets in south Euless were recently named Payton, Nail and Trigg. These families are members of the Historical Preservation Committee. 6. Robert Nails' daughter, Linda Pool, completed an application to become a member of the Historical Preservation Committee. Her application will be given to the City Secretary's office. 7. Weldon Cannon again expressed his appreciation for all that Andy Weinzapfel does for the Committee and the preservation of Euless history. 8. Weldon Cannon will email and/or submit various interviews he conducted of local Euless residents to the City. Some interviews were done as far back as the 1970's. Mr. Cannon would like these interviews to be a part of the City's records. ADJOURNMENT Robert Nail made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Gary Parker seconded the motion. Motion approved.
