HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-03-14Historical Preservation Committee Minutes March 14, 2016 CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman, Barbara Collier, called the meeting to order at 10:02 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall at 201 N. Ector Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown, Bill Byers, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Gary Fieldsend, Bill Golden, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Mary Lib Saleh, Faye Stinneford, Andy Weinzapfel, Mavy Wright and Linda Pool. VISITORS PRESENT James Alderman and Barney Snitz STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson, Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald and Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mavy Wright made a correction to item #1, page 3: It should say, "A church from Hurst visited the Museum" instead of, "A church from Irving." Helen Payton made a correction to item #4, page 4: Weiser, should be spelled, W -i -s -e -r. Faye Stinneford made a motion to approve the minutes with the corrections. Gary Parker seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $11,984.33. There were expenditures totaling $374.09 for the art project. There was a deposit of $16.50 from the money jar, leaving a current balance of $11,626.74. GUESS SPEAKER 1. Andy Weinzapfel—Heritage Tree Program a. Discussed the boundaries to be included in the Heritage Tree program which includes land areas not inside the current boundaries of the City of Euless. The Committee agreed to include areas that once belonged to Euless. b. Will be speaking to the Park Board on April 4; April 9 at the Museum, and at Arbor Daze on April 23, 2016. The Parks Department will help with the program wherever needed. c. Perhaps develop a Historic Tree designation program for the City. HPC MTG 041116 Page 1 d. Some signs at the Preserve at McCormick parks may need to be replaced and/or updated. e. Mr. Weinzapfel displayed various trees including descriptions of historic trees and sites around the target area. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports / Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. Seven visitors visited Heritage Park during open house on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Bill Covington spoke about the American Revolution. b. Mrs. Wright indicated the need for more volunteers to help give tours of the outside of Heritage Park. Leon Hogg has been the only volunteer for the Log House of late and the need for additional help was noted. c. The members discussed the various programs recently held for publicity purposes and their successes. It was mentioned that perhaps a few programs a year might be appropriate instead of every month. d. Andy Weinzapfel will be giving a presentation during open house on April 9, 2016. There were concerns about the venue and available space. Mr. Weinzapfel asked staff to provide various equipment for the presentation. e. It was suggested that Bill Covington and other speakers may be invited back to speak during Christmas at Heritage Park and/or the Greek festival event. 2. Acquisitions—Bill Byers reported that a wall plaque, ball and bats from the grand opening of Parks at Texas Star, first golf ball hit off at the golf course and an old washer will be acquired for the Museum. 3. Library Display—No Report. 4. Website \ Facebook—Bill Golden noted that he posted about the speaker at Heritage Park and had many positive replies. 5. Heritage Park—Gary Parker put air freshener inside the Fuller House. 6. Local Historical Marker—No Report. 7. Publicity—Bill Golden a. The Committee discussed the fact that advertisement of open house are being done through as many venues as are available. b. Various programs to draw visitors to open house have been and are being experimented with. c. It was mentioned that the amount of visitors to Heritage Park is perhaps normal comparatively speaking to other museums. d. Bill Golden suggested perhaps selling tickets to speaking engagements. e. Mary Lib Saleh suggested sending invitations to other historical committees in the area. A report of $683.51 total cost for the art contest event was given. South Euless Elementary School expressed interest in hosting future art contest events including refreshments, etc. HPC MTG 041116 Page 2 8. Plaque—No Report. 9. Display Signs—No Report. 10. Oral History \ Photography—Gary Fieldsend asked to be removed as Chair of this Sub- committee. Barbara Collier attended a workshop on oral history programs and may be able to work on the Sub -committee. 11. Artifact Recovery—No Report. 12. Historical Albums—Marilyn Long would like to gather photographs and information about the death of Officer David Hofer for the albums. 13. Texas State Historical Marker Application—No Report. STAFF REPORT 1. Hard copies of the Board and Commission booklet are available for pick up. COMMITTEE / OTHER REPORTS 1. Marilyn Long will purchase a shadow box to display the First United Methodist Church plate. 2. Members discussed acquiring a part of the fence from the cross bridge over Highway 183 near Euless Junior High. Areas of the fence have many padlocks placed there by students over the years. The members discussed possibly acquiring a part of the fence and holding a contest for students to open their locks and winning a prize of some sort. This could be a way of advertising Heritage Park as well. 3. Weldon Cannon asked about including emails on the Board and Commissions handbook. 4. The Committee welcomed Linda Pool to the Committee. Her application was approved. 5. Robert Nail reminisced about how difficult it was to establish the Committee and how much he enjoys the meetings. Mr. Nail has been cleaning out his personal belongings and found J.R. Fuller's marriage license issued in 1910. Weldon Cannon looked over the license and declared it an original copy. Linda Pool also mentioned there may be other marriage licenses of her ancestors. After a brief discussion, Gary Parker made a motion for the Committee to pay for framing the marriage certificates from the Nails. Mavy Wright seconded the motion. All were in favor, motion approved. 6. Weldon Cannon reported on the following: a. Has original deeds of land purchases made by his family. He would consider donating these items to the Committee but would like a more secure location to keep originals rather than at the Museum. He suggested that copies could be kept at the Museum, while originals were kept elsewhere. b. Currently proofing oral history recordings for staff. c. Will continue to submit interviews to the staff to keep as a part of the archives. HPC MTG 041116 Page 3 d. Will be speaking about the Bedford Reunion on April 9, 2016 at an event in Arlington. 7. Don Martin reported about the Mayor's trip to New York for the burial of Officer Hofer. Members of the Euless group that went for Officer Hofer's funeral were treated very well by the city of New York. ADJOURNMENT Gary Parker made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
