Greetings from Your Mayor
Dear Citizens,
Spring is here whic
means Arbor Daze is here!
Are you ready for the big
festival celebrating the
125th anniversary of
Arbor Day? This year
will be extra special
with educational videos
on the history of Arbor
Day, fabulous 69s entertain-
ment free trees, crafts, foollOr
d and
fun. Arbor Daze is the only festival of its
kind and it is here in Euless with 10,000 free tree giveaways. A
festival like Arbor Daze can only happen with a dedicated staff
and many community volunteers. Thank you all for giving of
your time and talents.
City Council had a busy goal setting worksession in February
and approved a resolution for a new mission and vision
statement. We are proud to serve our citizens and want the best
for you. We want you all to be "Raving Fans" for Euless.
We are proud that our city continues to win state and national
awards. City Council and staff continue to be recognized for their
expertise which is highlighted in this issue.
The Elisha Adam Euless Historical Marker was unveiled in
February and many Euless descendants came from near and far.
The marker is located along the walkway between the library
and City Hall. We thank the Euless Historical Preservation
Committee for making this happen.
The Texas Star Golf Course officially opens on May 22. We
have had a great response for memberships. The Conference
Centre should be ready by late June. We encourage you to visit
the Centre after it opens and enjoy a meal overlooking the
eighteenth hole of our beautiful golf course.
Our library is gaining recognition throughout the state.
Dignitaries have sent wonderful raves and good wishes after their
visits. We have very interesting programs planned for summer
and it will be one of the few "cool" places to be on a hot summer
day. Libraries nationwide will be celebrating "Night of a
Thousand Stars" on April 23. School children from elementary
to junior high school will be reading their favorite stories in
the library.
The Euless Library Foundation expects the bronze statue,
"Rapture of the Human Spirit," to be placed in front of the library
in late June. Foundation members visited the artist, Cindy
Burleson, in her Austin studio to view the statue before it was
delivered to the foundry. They said it was absolutely beautiful and
are so excited about bringing this first public statue to Euless.
Members have worked diligently to raise funds for the statue but
still need many dollars. Citizens can make a gift to the community
by making donations for the statue at the main desk in the library.
If you have not visited Softball World at Texas Star lately,
you need to go. Staff has refurbished the entire area and it is
so pleasant to visit. It is an inexpensive evening of fun with
some great ball games.
With longer days and more time to spend outside, it is a great
time to get to know your neighbors. Neighborhood Associations
provide an excellent opportunity to meet your neighbors and be
involved in the community. If you do not have an association,
call Jenny Kratz at 685-1821, and she will help get one started.
Apartment neighborhood associations can be formed too.
For the past three months, the Police Department has
sponsored Town Hall meetings at every elementary and junior
high school in the city. The police, along with city staff and
Council, have been available to answer questions and update
citizens on current city information. A special "thank you" to the
staff and Council who have participated, and also to the citizens
who attended the meetings. We have completed three years of
Town Hall meetings, which is a lot of volunteer hours. We are one
of a few cities across the nation that conduct Town Hall meetings
annually for our citizens.
Election day for City Council and School Board Members is
May 3. Early voting will be held at Midway Recreation Center
(see voting dates inside). We encourage you to be an active
member of our community and use your precious right to vote.
We are fortunate in America that we have a voting privilege and
especially the convenience of an early voting period in Texas.
We have much to be thankful for in our community: beautiful
parks, new athletic facilities, a large library, low crime rates,
good city services, dedicated city staff, hard working Council
Members and so many caring citizens. Each and every citizen in
our city needs to care enough to Build a Better Tomorrow.

Texas Star
exas Star Golf Course is being touted as
one of the best new courses in Texas.
YFinal preparations are currently being
made on the golf course in anticipation
of opening day on May 22.
The grasses have matured favorably over the
winter and Golf Superintendent Jon Snider
anticipates the golf course being well groomed
for opening day. Grasses were planted last
summer, allowing growth of a solid root base
before beginning daily and tournament play.
Texas Star is the first golf course in Texas to plant
Penn G-2 Bent Grass on the greens and Mr. Snider
has been carefully watching its progress and is
pleased with its growth.
Golf Professional Duff Cunningham has been
busy hiring staff, scheduling tourna-
ments and promoting the golf course.
Mr. Cunningham is delighted that Texas
Star will be a spikeless facility, a stan-
dard in new golf courses.
"As a spikeless golf facility, Texas Star
will provide golfers the luxury of step-
ping onto a green and feeling like it was
the first time it had been played," said
Duff Cunningham, Golf Professional.
Texas Star memberships are
available to individuals and businesses.

Softball World at Texas Star
Since the purchase of Softball World at Texas
Star last year, it has grown into a national award-
winning facility that is bringing many accolades
to Euless. Softball World recently received
the Major Sportsplex of the Year Award from
the Sportsplex Operators and Developers
Association (SODA) and also hosted the coed
World Championship last fall, consisting of 165
teams from 34 states.
Softball World staff was busy during the off
season preparing for a full 1997 season.
Tournaments are scheduled for every weekend
(40 weeks a year) and slo-pitch softball leagues
are offered for adults six days a week (Sunday
through Friday). In addition to the regular season,
Softball World at Texas Star will be hosting
eight major tournaments in 1997 including the
Mixed A -B -C Texas State Championship and the
Senior Softball World Series.
Renovations completed during the off season
included the repair of fences, construction of
oversized scoreboards, and the addition of new
signs and landscaped areas. An enclosed play-
ground is being installed for small children,
shielding them from foul balls. The park offers
extensive concession stand items and has the
largest softball pro shop in Texas.
In addition to the park attaining national
awards, Softball World staff is also rec
recognition for their outstanding efforts. G
Manager Rick Lyle has been emplo,
Softball World since 1984, beginning his ter
an umpire. He has been the General M<
since 1991 and received the USSSA Dire
the Year Award for the Greater Soul
Division in 1996. Softball World has twc
alters who oversee the daily operations
facility. Pro Shop Manager Richarc
started working part time at Softball We
1989 and is now responsible for maint
inventory, serving as night manager four n
week, and acting as tournament direct
some events. He assists in league, tourn
staff and umpire scheduling. Softball
Office Manager, Jeff Baker, began
working at the ballpark in 1991. He is
responsible for the accounting of all park
operations and the communication with
park customers.
Softball World at Texas Star is expect-
ing an outstanding year in tournament
play and has already seen an increase in
players at the park. To receive a 1997

Boal Setting Worksession
During a recent Council worksession,
Council and staff members revised Euless'
strategic plan by modifying the mission
statement and creating a vision statement.
Euless City Council passed a resolution
to implement this new and innovative
vision statement as a guide for the city.
By completing this vision statement, it
provides the Council, staff and citizens of
Euless with a common goal and direction
for the future of Euless. The City of Euless
vision statement is as follows:
Our vision for Euless, Texas, is
a progressive community of 50,000

Euless Volunteer of the Year
Each year, the United Way recognizes
individuals for their contributions and volunteer
efforts throughout Northeast Tarrant County.
Andy Chesney, Euless resident and owner of
B & B Wrecker Service, has been selected as
Euless' United Way Volunteer of the Year for 1996.
Mr. Chesney has volunteered countless hours
to assist the Euless Police and fire Departments.
He helps the Fire Department when they need
help with serious fires and provides cars for both
the Fire and Police Departments for training
efforts. He is always ready to assist in an emer-
gency situation such as helping the Euless Police
Department direct traffic at the accident where a
D/FW Airport Officer had died.
In addition to his volunteer efforts with the
city, he also enjoys volunteering his time and ser-
vices to Trinity High School (THS). Mr. Chesney
assists the THS Project Graduation committee
annually by providing a crashed car depicting
the repercussions of drunk driving.
Andy Chesney is a dedicated Euless resident
who devotes countless hours to benefit not only
the city, but the future leaders of the city. Mr.
Chesney will be honored at the United Way
Volunteer of the Year Ceremony on April 24.

he countdown to Arbor Daze '97
began on March 1, with a community
event featuring a silent and live
auction. Monies raised from the event
help keep Arbor Daze a free family festival. KLUV
98.7 radio station, Arbor Daze entertainment
sponsor, also began its Arbor Daze countdown
by promoting the festival on air and giving away
concert tickets at designated remote locations.
Entertainment for Arbor Daze'97 includes The
Temptations, Mary Wilson of
the Supremes, The Shirelles,
The Tokens, Gary Lewis and
the Playboys, Freddy Cannon
and Bobby Vee. Hypnotist
Ken Whitener will open each
night before the concerts with
his magnificent magical perfor-
mances. In addition to the
nightly musical entertainment, 1
Crawfish will be entertaining
audiences daily with their high j
energy musical performances on i
the Allen Samuels Dodge Stage.
The concerts are free but tickets
will be required to enter the
nightly shows and must be picked
up before the festival begins on April
18, or there will be a $5 charge at the gate. Tickets
may be obtained from KLUV 98.7, at their
designated remote sites, as well as Midway
Recreation Center.
Although musical entertainment is offered
nightly, daytime visitors can browse through
arts and craft booths, a business exposition, local
entertainment shows and a plant sale. Carnival
rides, along with food and beverages, will also be
available with the purchase of tickets.
The Euless Arbor Daze festival commemorates
the 125th anniversary of Arbor Day. J. Sterling
Morton founded the special tree planting day in
1872 when he proposed the holiday, Arbor Day,
to the National Board of Agriculture. In honor of
this anniversary, 10,000 free trees will be given
to visitors who watch a video on the history of
Arbor Day.
"We have watched this festival grow over the
past eight years from a Lawn and Garden Show
to a national award winning festival that
attracts over 125,000 people," said Rick
Herold, Director of Community Services.
"We have a great festival planned this year that
we feel will be the best one yet!"
Arbor Daze will be held on the grounds of the
Municipal Complex (201 Ector Drive) and across
Ector Drive, which will be temporarily closed
during the festival. Free parking
with complimentary shuttle service will be
available at Trinity High School and Campus
West, on the west side of Hwy 157. Parking and
shuttle service will also be available from the
Kmart parking lot but there will be a $3.00 shuttle
service charge.
Arbor Daze will be held on April 18,19, & 20,
1997, and anyone needing information about
the festival can call 685-1669.
pymxjo
Arbor Daze visitors can park and ride the complimentary* shuttle service from three loca-
tions. The shuttles will provide continuous, round trip service during the entire festival.

**Parking is not available at First Baptist Church due to prior commitments.
Over 100 community members, along with city staff, lend to the success of Arbor Daze
by volunteering in ticket sales, souvenir sales and information booths. Volunteer
Coordinator Diane Eggers is still seeking citizens to volunteer any of the three days. If
interested, call Diane at 685-1670.

he Historical Preservation Council for
Tarrant County has chosen the Morris
Farm House, located adjacent to the
Morrisdale subdivision, as the 1997
Designer's Showhouse. Residents of the
Morrisdale neighborhood, Jerry and Brenda
Jenkins, had purchased the Morris Farm House
just prior to it being chosen as a Showhouse.
Each year, the Historical Preservation Council
chooses a historic home for area designers to
decorate the interior and immediate exterior of
the house for display to the public. Euless is
proud that the Morris Farm House will be the
first Showhouse outside the City of Fort
Worth, something the Historical Preservation
Council hopes will broaden the base of their
countywide organization.
Built in 1935 by Emory and Rae Morris, this
house was located on their 240 acre tract farm in
rural Tarrant County. The Morris Farm House
has transgressed from a simple frame farmhouse
to a 16 room ranch style rock home with high
ceilings, hardwood floors and windows at every
glance. The rocks of this unique rustic house
were gleaned from the surrounding farm, which
adds to the charm of both cottage and ranch
style dwellings.
Interestingly, Rae Morris was known as a
prominent business woman who began as a
home baker and purportedly traded eggwhites
and recipes with her neighbor, Mrs. Baird. She
found her fortune when she opened the Park
Place Bakery, an "exclusive cakeshop" known
for its angel food cakes. Her husband, Emory
Morris, was apparently very meticulous about
their house and had stones dug up from the
property when they moved their house from
what is now Pipeline Road to its present
location, a few hundred feet from the roadway.
The Morris Farm House will be open to the
public Saturday, April 26 through Sunday,
May 11. The Historical Preservation Council
anticipates over 7,000 people to tour the 1997
Showhouse and hopes that it will become a
tourist attraction like previous Showhouses,
such as Thistle Hill and the Downtown YMCA.
Tickets for Showhouse 1997 can be pur-
chased prior to the event for $8.00 or can be
purchased at the door for $10.00. A tea room
and gift shop will be available and the money
raised will benefit the Tarrant County Historical
Preservation Council. For additional informa-
tion, call Susan Frost, Showhouse Chairperson,
at 6544912.
