HomeMy WebLinkAboutMayor's Newsletter 04/99coo a MAYOR'S C I T y 0 F IGreetings From Your Mayor Dear Citizens, Are you ready for the Arbor Daze festival in April? We've planned for one of the best festivals ever, with a new site which provides additional space for vendors, volunteers and festival visitors. The Sunday concerts are scheduled for the after- noon, versus previous years with evening concerts, allowing for families to enjoy the day and rest before the next week. I do want to be first to tell you that there is a small parking fee of $3.00, but all cars will be able to park on the premises this year. We're still proud that Arbor Daze is a free, family- oriented festival with no entry fees or concert fees (with a ticket). And the City of Euless thanks our generous sponsors for allowing us to continue in this tradition. Have you visited our library recently? Although most of Euless' citizens have visited the Euless Public Library, I occasionally hear someone say they have never been in the library. We have one of the finest libraries in the state and it was voted the best in Northeast Tarrant County. Our new Library Administrator, JoAnn Rogers, and her staff have made many exciting plans for the library's future. The Euless Library Foundation added another beautiful bronze statue to the library grounds called, "It was just yesterday." The Foundation has been so generous to the city by donating two library statues. Their next meeting is May 10, 7:00 p.m., in the library conference room and anyone is invited to attend. Have you driven down Westpark Way since its completion? It is an excellent roadway for our city and those travelling through it. We recognize the awful traffic congestion when construction is tran- spiring, but the rewards are worth it. We anticipate E U L E S S Highway 157 to be com- pleted by the end of 1999. Both Police and Fire Departments have sev- eral programs that bene- fit our citizens and are a free public service for resi- dents. The police offer a Home Security check while the Fre Department will check a home for fire safety. The security and comfort is well worth the time and effort. A class of second graders wrote me recently say- ing they could not enjoy their recess time on their school playground because of all the animal "mess" left on the grounds. I promised to place a notice of our animal code violations in the newsletter. Please take notice and let's keep our parks and play- grounds clean for our children and all citizens. Don't forget the Fuller House is a museum chronicling Euless' history and that it is open the second Saturday each month, from 1-5 p.m. There is no entry fee to the museum. The Fuller House is also available for small parties and receptions. Please remember that Saturday, May 1, 1999, is election day. Elections will be held in the meet- ing room of the Euless Library this year, not at Midway Recreation Center. School board elections and municipal elections are held at the same place. We encourage you to exercise your right to vote because every vote truly does count. Together we are Building a Better Tomorrow. cA- c.0 - Mary Lib Saleh Mayor New (itg Manager P. 2 New libraru Administrator P. 3 (itizens on Patrol P. 4 Arbor Daze 1999 P. 6-3 Poadwag Project Schedule P. 9 Euless Council Selects New Citi Manager uless City Council didn't have to look far to find a replacement for City Manager Tom Hart, who is now serving as the City Manager in Grand Prairie. Seeking to find someone who would continue with the Council's goals of progress into the next millennium, they knew they had that "someone" already on their team, Deputy City Manager Joe Hennig. Euless City Council offered Deputy City Manager Joe HenniS the position of Euless City Manager and he officially began his new assignment on March 1. "We felt that Joe had all the characteristics we desired in a leader to manage the City of Euless," said Mayor Mary Lib Saleh. "He already knew the integral parts of the city and what the Council expects from the City Manager and staff. We could not have asked for a better manager to step in and continue where Tom Hart left off." and became Deputy City Manager in 1997. Prior to his tenure with the City of Euless, he worked for TU Electric for 23 years, serving in several managerial positions. Mr. HenniS has presented his goals before the Council including budget controls (mini- mizing tax impact on citizens "We could not have asked for a better manager to step in and continue inhere Tom Wart left off," said Mayor Saleh. Mr. Hennig has been with Euless since 1992, where he began as the Director of Development Services. Both HenniS's graduated from Texas Tech University and are native Texans, with the Mid -Cities being their home since 1982. Much Ado About the Euless Public Library With serenading music, unique cof- fees and a peaceful aquarium, Euless Public Library is more than the average place to check out books. Although books are the predominant source in the library, Internet access, a specialized genealogy area, current magazines, and video rentals are also available to enhance one's experience. The library offers many opportunities to become involved including the Let's Talk about Books group, which meets the first Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. in the library. Former Library Manager Betty Yarbrough, who recently retired after twenty years, is planning on participating with this fun group. The group is open to anyone and the only requirement is that you share what books you have been reading. For additional information about the Euless Public Library, call 685-1679. page 2 New Library Administrator Bound for Success With Euless Public Library being voted one of the Best Public Libraries in NE Tarrant County, it's no wonder JoAnn Rogers couldn't wait to tackle her new role as Euless Library Administrator. When Euless Library Manager Betty Yarbrough retired after 20 years of service with Euless, JoAnn Rogers was selected as her replacement and is enjoying her first few months at the Euless Public Library. " I have been involved with Library Administration for over 25 years at varying capacities and have always thought Euless was very innovative in their outreach programs and activities," said JoAnn Rogers, Library Administrator. "The staff is really wonderful and of course, I love coming to work in this beautiful new facili- ty. The potential for Euless Public Library is limitless!" Ms. Rogers has a Master of Library Science degree from Texas Woman's Uni- versity. She has worked in various libraries throughout Dallas and Fort Worth, includ- ing both Hurst and Bedford libraries. Ms. Rogers even started a bookmobile service in Tyler, Texas, from a gymnasium at Tyler State College. She is a member of the Texas Library Association, Texas Woman's University Library Alumni Board and the Euless Library Foundation. She has been honored with the ALA Shirley Olofson Award, which is given to an outstanding new librarian. Ms. Rogers is looking forward to initiating new programs in the library to encourage more participation and visitor frequency from the community. She is also anticipating expanding existing services such as the book drop, available books and periodicals, and readership programs. Residents are encouraged to introduce themselves to JoAnn Rogers on their next visit to the Euless Public Library. Ms. Rogers can be reached at 6854482. Residents may recognize C O P volunteers as they patrol the streets in a C O P car, which is marked with the Citizens On Patrol lettering, an amber light bar and a spotlight. One initiative of the C O P volunteers will be to begin a survey of handicapped parking spaces in the city to ensure that all of the handicapped spaces are well marked and signed properly. One of the police depart- ment's goals is that the C O P pro- gram will serve as an example of how the police and the community can work together to reduce crime and make Euless an even safer place to live. Construction on the facility, which will be located at the Parks at Texas Stars, is scheduled to begin this summer with the opening planned for the spring of 2000. "Through the Dr Pepper facilities, we want to address the existing demand for ice in North Texas and to foster further partici- pation in the sport of hockey," said Stars Chairman of the Board and Owner Tom Hicks. The City of Euless is proud to have expanded the once small town event into a 100,000+ family festival that attracts people from across the state of Texas and beyond. As Euless City Officials pledged to its citizens in 1957 that a priority would be placed on beautification efforts, the Community Services Department designed an event that would kick-off the city's new initiative. Thus came the "How to Grow Lawn and Garden Show," which included free seminars provided by lawn and garden experts, almost 30 lawn and garden ven- dors, and a Volkswagen show The event was held in the city gymnasium and was a nonalcoholic, free family festival. Enter- tainment was provided by the Euless Spice of Life Kitchen Band, who performed on a flatbed trailer for approximately 3,500 people. City Officials deemed the event a suc- cess and decided to make it an annual event, with its focus always remaining on the importance of trees and the beautifica- tion of the city. However, Euless Officials still dreamed of a larger, more family- oriented event that would attract crowds page 6 nationally recognized festival. From Leisure Fair, the name Arbor Daze evolved which quickly brought the focus of the festival back to trees yet still emphasizing the importance of this nonal- coholic, free family event. The festival was rooted with the National Arbor Day Foundation and eventually became one of the Foundation's major success stories when Arbor Daze was recognized as the Best Arbor Day Festival in the Nation in 1994. Community organizations such as the Euless Lions Club, High School PTA's, Project Graduation, High School Band Boosters, Youth '; Advisory Board, Parks and Leisure Services Board, local Church groups, Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, and several spe- cial work groups volunteer their time to make Arbor Daze a success. Publishing brochures, securing arts and crafts vendors, developing the layout of the festival, coordinating with local busi- nesses, ordering souvenirs and several other duties are carried out by city employ- ees who strive to make Arbor Daze better each year. Arbor Daze has been used as an instru- mental tool in several facets of the school district. Project Graduation committee Cont. on page 8 ... page 7 Arbor Daze 1999 (cont.) members raise funding in their booth while the scout troops and baseball/softball associations sell food and beverages to fund their special projects. During the sum- mer following the annual festival in April, handicapped high school students begin preparing the 10,000 trees that will be given away at the next festival. This not only helps city staff, but it teaches the students the importance of volunteering and the benefit that trees provide the community. ARBOR DAZE PLANTS SOLID ROOTS From a small beginning, like an acorn, Arbor Daze has matured into one of the largest nonalcoholic, free family festivals in the state of Texas. It has received local and international awards from organiza- tions such as the International Festivals and Events Association, Texas Festivals and Arbor Daze 1999 Location Events Association, and was honored as the Best Arbor Day Festival in the Nation in 1994. Readers of the Fort Worth Star Telegram voted Arbor Daze their favorite festival in the area and the Fort Worth Business Press ranked Arbor Daze as the fifth largest annual event in Tarrant County. Arbor Daze 1999 will be held on April 23, 24, 25, at its new location between Bear Creek Parkway and Fuller -Wiser Road. The concerts are free but require a ticket, which can be obtained by calling the KLUV 98.7 ticket hotline, (214)443-1571, or are available at Raven's Grille, 1400 Texas Star Parkway.
