Greetings from Your Mayor Dear Citizens, Welcome, welcome to a wonderful spring- time! I'm sure that we appreciate all the rain during our winter, but oh, how great to see the sunshine and the flowers. Now if we could just have a little bit of that rain when our summer days come. Arbor Daze will be here in a few days, and the city staff has so many great things planned for all its citizens (no rain, please). Our entertain- ment is superb again and you must check out all the dates for appearances. Be sure to get your tickets for the nighttime entertainment before you arrive at the Arbor Daze festival. There still may be an opportunity to volunteer at one of our booths. There are so many good things going on in Euless now. Have you seen the Target Superstore site at the corner of Glade Road and Heritage? Plans are for an October opening. Many other businesses plan to open at the same site shortly thereafter. We have several new housing sites going up on Mid -Cities Boulevard, Cullum Street, Fuller Wiser, south Euless, and more. Also, we are still working on Mid -Cities Boulevard, Harwood Road, and Main Street. There have been some delays due to all the winter rains. Main Street construction will begin soon, the utility lines have been moved, and we look for the project to take two years. But it will be beautiful and our businesses will flourish. Our census reports show that we have a 20.6 per cent increase in population and we have grown from 38,149 in 1990 to 46,005 in 2000. We have some great citizens in our city. Please read about all the Fire and Police Awards to our city person- nel. We are so proud of their accomplishments. If you want to learn more about the police and fire departments do consider joining one of the citizen academies for each of those departments. Call and sign up for an experience of a lifetime. We have so many special programs going on in Euless now besides all the library programs, recreational programs and sports programs. The golf course is offering specials for our city residents and members only. If you are a golfer you need to investigate! In March we opened the Safe Place program where any young per- son from the ages of 7 to 17 can find a safe place in any of our three fire stations at any time of the day or night. Do read about the wonderful programs for those young people that need to find a safe place. We have several changes in our city staff. Our new Planning and Development Director is Michael Collins and our Economic Development Director is Bill Ridgway. We welcome them to our great city. Two long time staff members have retired. They are James Smith of the Fire Department and Ruth Alley our Personnel Manager. We wish them well in their retirement. Both James and Ruth served our city for twenty five years. We will miss having them each day on our staff. Our city elections and school board elections are held on May 5 in the library. We will have early voting for the two weeks preceeding the election date. There is one open seat on the city council and an open seat on the school board. Do study each candidate's agenda and vote. It is so important for you to vote, and we try to accommodate the election hours to fit your schedule. Our Euless Today has so many pages full of information for your reading with even more information on where to find up to date infor- mation on our city activities. Please read about all the activities we offer our citizens and do take advantage of as many as your time will allow. We have activities for all ages and interests and plenty of activities for you to engage in volunteerism. Euless is a great city. Together with all our citizens we can Build a Better Tomorrow for our future. Members of the Fire Department's charter Citizens Fire Academy experienced this "controlled burn" situa- tion and many more as they worked their way through 12 weeks of both classroom and hands-on demonstrations. "It's been a desire of the Fire Department for several years," says Fire Inspector Christine Cox. They have wanted to give residents the opportunity to be "up close and personal" to what fire fighters and paramedics do on the job every day. So, starting the fourth week of class, students were allowed to sign up to do ride - outs at the three fire stations on both the ambu- lances and fire trucks. Don't worry, though. These ride -outs are for observation only; at no time will the students fight fires or give patient care. Then, on March 24, the students got a double whammy. First, students arrived Photo by Fire Lt. Franchot Thomas David Shanahan dresses out for the Citizens Fire Academy search and rescue activities. Helen Voss is intebating a practice mannequin during EMS night with the Citizens Fire Academy. at DFW Airport's Training Field where they were taken into a controlled burn situation, fully suited in protective, clothing. "This allowed the students to have a better understanding of the fire conditions and the physical demands fire fighters must overcome," says Cox. "In the same evening, students were also taken through a vehicular extrication exercise. Students used some of the common tools, such as the jaws -of -life, that fire fighters use to rescue people from a mangled vehi- cle." Names are currently being placed on a waiting list for the next class, scheduled to begin in the fall. The Academy is a 12 -week program in which the class meets one evening a week for three hours. For more information or to be placed on the waiting list, please call Fire Administration at 817-685-1600. Cancellations.com and the City of Euless will keep you "in the know." The digital divide is shrinking at the Euless Public Library ix years ago, there was a first generation system and no Internet, just two personal computers and antiquated word processing software. The Library now has Internet access, educational games and produc- tion software such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. With a $96,548 grant from the Telecommunication Infrastructure Fund, the Library now offers a wide range of digital opportunities. From surfing the Internet, to writing a resume, to scanning photos, to checking e- mail, the Euless Public Library has the tools you need to cross that digital divide. In December, 27 computers were installed in the Library's public area. According to JoAnn Rogers, Library Administrator, that's "the most PCs available for public use in a library of our size." In addition to the new web surfing computers, the process has become fully automated, allowing users to access the Internet in one hour increments. That means less waiting for a chance to see what's new on the X -Files web site. Users now log onto the web surfing computers with their library cards. Near the end of one hour, the automated system gives a five minute warning and then terminates their connection so that the next person in line can have a turn. There are 17 computers with this new timing feature for web access. Ten are located in the center of the Library, four in Youth and three in Teen Point. But that's not all. Most of these computers also support Microsoft Office 2000 — Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But wait, there's more! A page scanner is also avail- able for scanning photos or text materials. Instead of routing the scanned image to a computer, it downloads to a floppy disk or ZIP disk that you provide. Most of the public computers support these media, so you can scan a photo of your daughter playing dress -up and insert it in your e-mail to your great -Aunt in Nebraska. And for our visually impaired patrons, IBM Homepage Reader, a software package that actually reads a web page's contents out loud, will be loaded on all of the computers by the end of June. Although the Library has made such great strides, they're constantly looking to the future. "We're going to continue to change and continue to evolve," promises Sheila Williams, Library Assistant Administrator. She notes that eventually, ebooks will be available through NetLibrary, a service purchased by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission for use by Texas pub- lic libraries. And when it comes to network sharing, we have some incredible resources for our patrons. For instance, TexShare enables participating libraries to offer a broader range of materials and services than any single Euless history continued from page 8 Historical Preservation Committee launched a campaign to save this symbol of Euless' history. A united effort began between Taco Bell restaurant, Saebit Baptist Church, the Fuller family, Euless city officials and con- cerned residents, which resulted in the relocation of the house to Heritage Park. In addition to interlibrary loans of materials, TexShare also offers online full -text databases, similar to those available from the Texas State Electronic Library. These databases provide desktop access to jour- nal articles that were formerly available only in large research libraries. TexShare also offers an interlibrary loan service. If you can't find the resource you need at the Euless Library, the staff can search for it through a number of colleges, universities and other public libraries throughout Texas. Users can then check it out on an "as available" basis. "We're trying to stay ahead of the game when it comes to allocating our materials funds," says Rogers. The Library staff is currently looking into purchasing more books on CD and movies on DVD. The Library also offers classes throughout the year on using the Internet and is researching the possibility of offering classes on the Microsoft Office software products. The possibilities are endless. Research, games, surfing and don't forget books ... it's all available at the Euless Public Library. Euless Public Library 201 N. Safe places provide temporary shelter to young people in cri- sis. They are secure places where any young person in a crisis can walk in and ask for help. The Bridge Emergency Youth Services is then contacted and within minutes a volunteer or staff counselor arrives to offer assistance. Safe Place puts distressed children and their families in touch with resources they need to keep safe and provide support and guidance to the family. "We are very excited to be a part of this program," said Don Wilson, Deputy Fire Chief. "This is a vital step in serving and protecting the young people in our commu- nity." Euless' three fire stations are located at 201 E. Ash Lane, 1515 Westpark Way and 201 W. Euless Blvd. (Hwy. 10). In Tarrant County, Safe Place is operated by The Bridge Emergency Youth Services. The Bridge is a non- profit agency providing licensed emergency youth shel- ter and counseling and is funded by the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services. The Photo by Fire Lt. The Safe Place goal is to have the Safe Place sign rec- ognized nationally as a symbol of help and safety for any young people who are lost or scared, abused, threatened or in any unsafe situation. If you would like information about finding a Safe Place, starting a new Safe Place program or becoming a Safe Place volunteer, please contact Kyle Bryan, Project Safe Place Coordinator, at 817-335-4673.
