Dear Citizens,
Happy Holidays to all. It's hard to believe we are
completing our millennium year 2000. And, what a
great year this has been for the citizens of Euless. We
have celebrated with planting the first tree anywhere
at the stroke of midnight 2000. Then we followed
with the most wonderful Arbor Daze Millennium
161 Event with outstanding guests and another bronze
statue for the city hall complex. So many children
and adults as well stop by to enjoy the statue and we
hope all of you will come and see.
We finally got started with our police and courts facility on Hwy. 10 and the
building is beginning to take shape now. We expect to be in the facility by next
fall. The Citizen's Police Alumni is raising funds to have a bronze statue in front
of the building entrance by selling bricks.
Our voters approved the renewal of the Crime Control & Prevention District
1/4 cent sales tax which enables the Police Department to expand and continue
crime safety programs as well as help pay for the police and courts facility.
.. -
We completed Hwy. 157 infrastructure and have begun the Mid -Cities
Boulevard widening as well as the Harwood Road widening. Both of these major
thoroughfares will be completed this year and we will immediately begin con-
struction of Main Street from Harwood Road to Hwy. 10.
We completed the renovation of the Himes Log Cabin and a celebration will
be held on December 9. It is a look at how our citizens lived one hundred and
fifty years ago. Bill Marquis did such a great job restoring the cabin and bring-
ing history to life. The cabin is located in the Heritage Park.
Our Texas Star Conference Centre and Golf Course and Parks at Texas Star
and Softball World are all doing well. The Golf Course is ranked in the top 15
municipal courses in the U.S. Our staff is doing such a great job. We hosted the
Dixie World Series for the second year and still get raves from the teams that
came. Euless, Texas has a great name in so many places. We also hosted the
Collegiate Golf Tournament in August — more accolades — and several tour-
naments at Softball World.
We had tremendous crowds for our amphitheater musical "West Side Story."
The weather was good and the show the best ever. Again, terrific staff and vol-
unteers.
Our library continues to do such innovative programs. From poetry night
for teenagers to sleepovers for teenagers to special story times, Texas literary
night, special musical events, even a birthday party. There are so many educa-
tional programs as well. And, the Library Foundation continues to volunteer
and add to the collection of art work. Just last month the Foundation gave
another bronze statue to the library. Do come and enjoy. The Friends continue
to have great book sales and use their monies for more special additions for the
library. Again, terrific volunteers for our city.
We have completed selections for our new and continuing Board and
Commission members. We appreciate all those citizens who strive to make our
city better and volunteer their time and talent. They will begin their term of
office in January.
Police Captain Joey Ziemian will be retiring after 30 years with the city of
Euless in January. Do read about his many accomplishments and wish him well
in his new adventure.
It is with sadness that we bid farewell to another long tenured police officer
who passed away in October. Officer Gary Kopecky served his city and citizens
well and will be remembered for his special talent with our youth.
We are looking forward to an exciting year 2001 with the development of the
new Target Superstore, the Krispy Kreme distribution center, the new residen-
tial subdivisions in north, east and south Euless and the developments along
Hwy. 121.
Enjoy all the holiday festivities and we wish you a healthy, happy holiday
season.
Your city council and city staff spend many working hours making this city
the best there is, but we could not do as much as we do without the many work-
ing hours our volunteers give to the city. Each of you is a shining star and I
know together we are Building a Better Tomorrow for our Future.

Town Hall Meetings scheduled for 2001
uless Town Hall Meetings were started in 1984 by Deputy City Manager
Gary McKamie, when he was the Chief of Police, for the purpose of
introducing Community Based Policing to the citizens and receiving
feedback from them about their concerns.
The program started with eight different meeting sites around town and a
panel of police personnel from different divisions of the department to answer
questions. It became evident very early on that the citizens had concerns that
went beyond the scope of the Police Department. Since its inception, the Town
Hall Meeting has evolved into four meetings a year and a panel with members
from all city departments. The focus of the meetings is to bring the citizens up
to date about ongoing projects, city development, special issues and to provide
citizens with an informal opportunity to address city officials face to face with
their questions and concerns.
The Town Hall Meetings for 2001 are at 7 p.m. on the following dates:
Thursday, January 11– Lakewood Elementary School, 1600 Donley Dr.
Thursday, January 25 – Central Junior High School, 3191 W. Pipeline Rd.
Thursday, February 15 – South Euless Elementary School, 605 S. Main St.
Thursday, March 1 – Wilshire Elementary School, 420 Wilshire Dr.
Prior to the meetings, a questionnaire will be sent out at random to citizens,
allowing them the opportunity to rate every city department and make written
comments. The comments from these surveys help the meetings' panel partic-
ipants address those issues important to the citizens.
Make plans to attend the Town Hall Meeting nearest you.
Police Captain retiring after 30 years of service
he beginning of a New Year will also be the begin-
ning of a whole new life for Captain Joseph John
Ziemian, Jr. Along with his wife, Cynthia, and
three Chinese Pugs (Bandit, Samantha and baby
Bartholomew), Captain Ziemian will be retiring to
Central Florida to start a "new adventure."
Captain Ziemian, better known as Joey, will be retir-
ing from the Euless Police Department on January 31,
2001, after 30 1/2 years of service. Motivated by a never-
ending desire to serve, Joey's career began on August 17,
1970.
During his tenure with the Euless Police Department,
he has performed a variety of duties including: Patrol
Officer, Criminal Investigator, Patrol Sergeant, CID
Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant and will be ending his career
as Captain. He has also spent several years involved with
different task forces, including serving as Commander of
a multi -agency countywide narcotics unit.
Along with his many promotions, Captain Ziemian
has received several awards and recognitions throughout
his career including Officer of the Year, Supervisor of the
Year (for two years) and Employee of the Month.
Looking back over the years, he believes the most
rewarding part of his job has been working with the
young people. He finds it uplifting to see the youth he
has worked with being involved in the community. He
also enjoys it when they recognize him on the street and
say hello. He also credits the advancement in technology
as the most useful improvement to law enforcement
since he started in 1970.
When it comes to a career, Captain Ziemian believes
that the first stage of any career is to "take" until you
learn enough. Then, in the second stage, you begin to

make a difference," and
"Remember why you're here
— to help others."
Although he is looking
forward to his retirement in
Police Captain Joey Ziemian Florida, it was with much
soul-searching that he and
his wife chose Florida. Their first choice was Costa Rica,
then Mexico. But after finally deciding on Florida, the
couple began making plans to build their dream home in
Leesburg. The house is located on a golf course and his
plans for the first several months of his retirement
include becoming club champion at Pennbrooke
Fairways. He also plans to explore the unseen areas of
Florida with his wife.
After settling into the "retirement life," Captain
Ziemian plans on using his love of teaching and police
work to help the local police department with writing
grants and teaching Law Enforcement courses at the
local community college.
Joey and Cynthia will miss their friends and co-work-
ers they are leaving behind, but they are excited about
the new adventure they will embark on during his retire-
ment. We at the City of Euless wish them both lots of
luck and lots of fun.

Police Corporal Gary Kopecky fought Lou Gehrig's disease
ary Kopecky was a dedicated 21 -year employee of the City of Euless. After a brief
stint in the Public Works Department, Gary followed a family tradition by com-
mitting to a career in law enforcement.
His tenure with the Euless Police Department was marked by a sincere heart for com-
munity service, particularly service to the children of our community. Gary served our
children through his many years as the school resource officer of Trinity High School and
as a D.A.R.E. officer in our elementary schools. Gary touched the lives of many children.
While Gary's career as a police officer was outstanding, his most important role was
service to the people who meant the most to him — his family. Gary was a totally com-
mitted husband to Diane and father to Amy, Casey and Justin. It was this role he would
want to be remembered for. Gary Kopecky passed away October 14, 2000. A memorial fund
has been set up for the Kopecky family at Western American National Bank, P.O. Box 1299,
Bedford, Texas 76095-1299. — by Gary McKamie
SuperTarget breaks ground in North Euless
he new Euless SuperTarget is on its way. The
27.5 acre site is located at the southwest corner
of State Highway 121 and Glade Road. The
SuperTarget, which includes Archer Farms Market, will
be 180,000 square feet of retail space.
The retail site also includes subsidiary retail spaces
located to the east of the SuperTarget nearer Hwy. 121.
This additional retail area is proposed to be structures of
25,670 square feet and 47,446 square feet as well as space
for additional development in the future. The possible
tenants of these spaces have not been presented to the
City of Euless Planning and Development Department at

this time. A new spine road coming off of Glade Road
approximately half way between Hwy. 121 and Heritage
Avenue will separate these two retail areas.
The site plan meets all of the City of Euless codes for
parking, landscaping and site conditions. The architec-
ture of the structures will be constructed of 100 percent
masonry with an upscale appearance. The primary drive
entries to the retail areas will include enhanced paving
with brick pavers as well as median plantings adding to
the aesthetic quality of the project.
After breaking ground this past October, the opening
of the SuperTarget is scheduled for October 2001.

Preschool — 3-yeartolds
We love parents, however...
with your child's best interest in mind,
parents are invited to their child's last class meet-
ing. Our instructors have found that quality of
instruction has often been affected by parent and/or
sibling distractions, interruptions and various other
concerns during class time. We feel that it is most
beneficial for children to have recreational time
with their peers.
