HomeMy WebLinkAboutEuless Today Winter/Spring 2006/2007Dear Citizens, It seems that the weather is finally cooling down from the long, hot summer. As you know, Euless has fun activities all year long. We've got some great ones coming up. You can find out more inside this Mission Sti newsletter. ... We are proud to announce the Volunteers of the Year for 2006 along with the Lifetime Achievement Award. We are truly thankful for our volunteers and what they contribute to our great city. We also have selected the youth volunteer of the year and the business volunteer of the year. Our volunteers are very special and we could not support all our great events without them. You'll notice in the recreation section of the newsletter, we have marked V L E ► \' S "Smart Choice" programs and classes that are a part of a Healthy New Euless effort. We really encourage all of our citizens to get out and exercise R ` on some way. Walking especially is something that people of any age and fitness level can participate in. We have great parks with walking paths all over the city. Please see the parks map on page 26 to find out about more parks in your neighborhood. Our parks are beautiful, and are a great place ; to exercise with friends or on your own. Enjoy! The Euless Historical Preservation Committee is promoting awareness of the historical heritage in Euless. The Committee gives tours 1-5 p.m. on the second Saturday each month of the Fuller House, Himes Log House and McCormick Barn. We hope you enjoy learning about Euless history and can take a tour of Heritage Park. A safety issue that really increases during the Holidays is fire safety. Fires can occur very easily in and around Christmas trees. It's very important to keep the tree fresh throughout the season by ensuring that it doesn't dry out and the lights used to decorate the tree are safe to use on trees. In addition, candles are another huge factor contributing to fires. Candles are pretty look at and smell nice, but they need to be taken very seriously when it comes to fire safety. Please be cautious when using candles and never leave a burning candle unattended. It just takes seconds for a large fire to start. We are delighted to announce that Pipeline Road is now open for travel. That completes our 1998 Bond Election Projects. We are working together with Grapevine on Glade Road, which should be completed sometime next year. The Euless Library is a hub of activity year round. They always have educational and fun programs as well as great resources for any endeavor you may come across. Libraries have books, magazines, databases and internet access all at no charge. Do visit our library and achieve your goals. Euless has proudly been a Tree City USA for the past nineteen years and is firmly committed to the importance of trees in the environment. This year Arbor Daze will be scaled back in size so members of our community can join in the fun. Please stay tuned for more information about our upcoming Arbor Daze celebration in April. Again, a special thanks to all our Volunteers because TOGETHER WE ARE BUILDING A BETTER TOMORROW. We're referring to candles. Candles continue to be a significant factor in fires in the United States and have contributed to significant fires in the Euless area. In 2002, the United States experienced approximately 18,000 fires caused by candles. These fires caused an estimated 130 deaths, 1,350 injuries and $333 million dollars in property loss according to the National Fire Protection Association. What can you do to protect your home or business from a dangerous fire caused by a candle? • Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or going to sleep. • Keep candles away from items that can catch fire, including curtains, clothing and books. • Place candles in a secure place where they won't be knocked over or bumped. • Use sturdy, non-combustible candle holders that won't tip easily and are wide enough to collect dripping Photo by: Ben Saladino Apartment units caught fire at Collins Park at Bear Creek Apartments in August. Over 40 wax. people were affected by this fire. • Never use candles around The source of the fire was flammable or combustible liquids. a candle. • Never carry a lit candle! • Keep candle wicks trimmed to 1/" and extinguish taper and pillar candles when they get to within two inches of the holder. Votive candles should be extinguished when the last 1/a" of wax starts to melt. • Some candles, such as tea lights, can melt plastic. Be sure they are on a non-combustible surface. • Candles generate a lot of heat and can ignite combustible materials above them. • Don't lean across a candle. Clothing and hair can ignite very easily • Keep children and pets away from areas where you are burning candles. • When you put them out, double check in a few minutes. Candles can smolder and reignite with tragic consequences. Be certain they are out! 817-685-1400 2006Volunteer Awards Given for Euless is very fortunate to have a dedicated, vigilant group of citizens in our community. Your opinion is important and we want to hear from you. www.euless.org 5 l Dear Earl: ;moi Help! I'm new to Euless ander I've never seen the Blue Bag Recycling Program before. What am I supposed to do? Blue -less in Euless Dear Blue -Less: Euless uses the Blue Bag Program for recyclables. They can be purchased at grocery stores or home improvement stores locally. The blue bags should be used to recycle glass bottles and jars; plastic bottles and containers (#'s 1,2,3,4,5 and 7 only) and metal, (aluminum, tin and steel) cans. Papers and paper products like cereal box board and junk mail all go in the paper sacks. Whatever can't be recycled should be placed in trash bags and heads to the landfill. Clear bags will be picked up as trash, so please be sure to use a blue bag. SOME RECYCLING HINTS: • You do not have to remove labels or crush cans. • Rinse out the containers before throwing them in the blue bag. • Remove caps or lids because they aren't recycled. • Do not recycle aerosol cans or hazardous materials. • If you have a lot of phone books, magazines, and newspapers it's fine to tie them into bundles. • Corrugated cardboard can either be put into the sacks or tied in bundles. Just be sure your bundles weigh less than 50 pounds. Blue bags are only picked up once a week as compared to garbage which is picked up twice a week. Please be sure you know your recycling day to avoid problems. Remember to keep the blue bags and paper sacks separate from your garbage (at least three feet is best) on your recycling pick-up day. They should be at your drawbridge by 7 a.m. the day of your pick up. For more information please call the Recycling Hotline at (817) 685-1825 or visit us on the web at www.euless.org/recycling. The decorated Christmas tree can be traced back to the ancient Romans and the first known reference to the Christmas tree in America was in the mid 18th century. Family traditions abound regarding the decorating and displaying of these trees. But, the one tradition associated with this wonderful symbol that we wish would go away, is fire. While less than one-tenth of one percent of the live, cut trees sold in America involve fires each year, the fires they produce can be large, fast moving and tragic. Here are some tips from the Euless Fire Department regarding the decorating and displaying of your Christmas tree that can help you have a safe, memorable Christmas: * If you purchase an artificial tree, select one that is listed as flame retardant. We recommend an artificial tree, but if you purchase v a live, cut tree select one that is not already losing needles excessively. This may indicate that it is already dried out. WE When you get your newly - purchased live tree home, cut off about one inch of the base and stand the tree in a bucket of water for about twenty-four hours in the garage or other unheated portion of your home. Then cut off another inch and place the tree in a sturdy tree stand that will hold one gallon of water. Keep the stand full of water. These steps should ensure that your tree will remain fresh throughout the season. * Place your tree away from exits, heat discharge vents and heat sources such as stoves, space heaters and fireplaces. Not only do v these dry out your live tree, they are potential sources of ignition. 6 817-685-1400 * If you use lights use only those that are listed by Underwriters Laboratories and do not string more together than the manu- V facturer recommends. This is usually three strings of the small, push -in lights and approximately fifty of the larger, screw-in lights. 1* NEVER USE CANDLES! Turn off all electric decorations when you go to bed and when you leave your home. V * Keep an eye on those small, inquisitive kids when they are near the tree. V If you have any questions, please call the Fire Marshal's Office at 817-685-1600. Have a safe and wonderful Holiday season! %.VIIIiiiuiiiLy cliV-iw aiiu uvviu uuiii%, alias VVIL11 the Construction Updates.
