Dear Citizens,
This issue of Euless Today is packed with information
about our city, citizens, and activities. Every page has
something to offer.
We say goodbye to Councilperson Bob Edwards and thank
him for his three years of service on our council. We
welcome Linda Martin and look forward to serving with her
in an exciting new year.
I Wealso send best wishes to our retiring staff members.
Captain Ronnie McClendon of the Fire Department and
Captain Roger Mangum of the Police Department are
retiring after more than 25 years with the city. Our warrant officer, Forrest Babb
has retired after many years with Euless. We will miss these very special members
of our staff community.
Our Main Street was completed ahead of time and now we look forward to the
landscaping in the fall. We give special thanks to all the businesses that
participated with the new monument signs. They look wonderful!
Euless has received two awards recently. The Tree City award has been given for
eighteen years. We are the second longest Tree City in Texas. The North Central
Texas Council of Governments honored Euless and seven sister cities with the
Regional Cooperation Award. All the cities worked together to get the Northeast
Transportation Services on track again. This is a tremendous advantage for those
that need rides for various activities. We are the only city to receive the Regional
Cooperation award three times.
The Euless Library Foundation is working diligently to raise the monies
necessary for the future art piece for the library. "The Blooms of Enlightenment"
will be the first of its kind in any public facility and will be a show piece for our city.
The Foundation welcomes new members and also welcomes donations for the art
work. There is a mock-up of the piece in the library. Do take a look and participate
in the purchase of this magnificent piece of art.
Our future cityark called The Preserve at McCormick Park will begin
construction in the fall. We had 98 young people participate in thepark's design
and we thank them for such vision. It was a great group and a fun group of
students working together on such an interesting project.
All of our city services and personnel are so special and we hope you read about
the fairly new service provided b our Emergency Medical Service in our city
ambulances. Our EMS personnel work diligently to provide the best and most
efficient medical response possible.
The Games of Texas will be here soon and that means over 10,000 students will
be in our area going for the gold. Many adults will be accompanying them and we
need lots of volunteers. It really is fun to meet and greet Texans from everywhere
and to display the spirit we have in our area. Do sign up now and volunteer and
make this the best Games of Texas ever.
There are so many activities listed in the edition for every age and interest. The
new Outdoor Adventure packages sound terrific and such a learning experience for
our oung people. And, this December for the first time we will host an Arts and
Craft Show, so get ready to participate. We hope you participate in many of the fine
activities available to our citizens.
And, we also hope you will continue to be the best volunteers anywhere. You
can see how many activities we provide but we also need volunteers for each affair.
You are the backbone of what we do in the city and we thank you again and again.
Congratulations to the latest graduates of the Citizens Police Academy and the
Citizens Fire Academy. Our Academy Alumni are the greatest and do so much for
the city.
The cityof Euless is fortunate to have such terrific citizens that truly care.
TOGETHR WE ARE BUILDING A BETTER TOMORROW. Have a safe and
enjoyable summer and fall season.

The Games of Texas is a sports festival created for
amateur athletes by the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation
(TAAF). Patterned after the Olympics, the Games of Texas
provides a forum for training and competition among
Texas' Olympic hopefuls and recreational athletes. It also
provides a forum for thousands of amateur athletes of all
ages and skill levels from across the state to demonstrate
their ability in their chosen sport. These Olympic -style
competitions are a wholesome avenue for positive personal
enrichment through sports and physical activity. The
Games of Texas has also been recognized as "an official
state games participant" by the United States Olympic
Committee.
The 2003 and 2004 Games- of Texas are hosted by a
coalition of northeast Tarrant
County cities: Bedford,
Colleyville, Euless, Grapevine,
Hurst and North Richland Hills.
In 2003 these six cities hosted

held every two years. The 2003 SGA was the largest United
States grassroots sports festival in 2003. An estimated
5,000 athletes and 20,000 spectators attended.
Four Euless athletes all brought home a gold medal at
the Games of Texas as well as the SGA in track and field
events and two even set new national records. Each of the
Euless participants was a member of the City of Euless
summer track team and previously won a medal in their
primary event at the Games of Texas 2002 in Waco.
Brittany Carr was a participant in four track events.
Brittany won a gold medal in the 200 meter, bronze medal
in the 400 meter and ribbons in both long jump and triple
jump. Chuck Davenport was a participant in the boys 11-
12 shot put and won a gold medal when he set a new SGA
national record by nearly 6 feet with his winning throw of
42 feet 6 inches with a 6 lb shot. India Faris participated
in the girls 11-12 shot put and also won a gold medal and

Remen-ibering Lloyd Baldwin
Day after day Lloyd Baldwin sits in front of the library with his dog
and a good book. Many of you have walked by him and not even
realized it. You may have even sat next to him and enjoyed his
comforting silence.
Lloyd passed away at the age of 88 on April 13, 2004 from a stroke,
but he will always be remembered fondly by Euless residents for his
contributions to the city, especially at the library.
In 1999, in an unprecedented honor, the Euless Library Foundation
acknowledged his dedicated service by erecting a statue in his likeness
and placing it in front of the library.
"It was such an honor when the Library Foundation called and told
us that they were going to create a statue that looked like him," said
Lloyd's wife Sybil Baldwin. "He loved to go to the library and spend
time reading."
Sybil and Lloyd met through a singles church group called Single
Adult Club (SAC). Lloyd later created a new club titled Mr. & Mrs.
Adult Club (MAC). There was a rigorous initiation process to become
a member of this club. He would require new members to walk across
obstacles blindfolded or go into grocery stores wearing a monkey
costume and purchase bananas.
They were married on July 20, 1962 at her mother's home. The
couple moved to the Morrisdale neighborhood in Euless in 1965. Sybil
recalled the days when Lloyd Baldwin drove a Renault Caravel with a
removable top. Their church congregation used to line up in the
parking lot just to see the couple along with their six children emerge
from this tiny car.
Lloyd worked as a radio announcer and band vocalist early in his
career. He sang tenor with the Baron Dakin Band in the Corpus
Christi area and then worked for A.C. Neilson Marketing Research for
41 years. He retired from Neilson in 1983.
An active member of the COP (Citizens on Patrol) for the
Morrisdale Neighborhood Association, he also graduated from the
Euless Citizens Police Academy and was the oldest member of the
alumni association. He then became involved in the Euless Library
Foundation. Lloyd truly enjoyed meeting the Euless citizens and
talking about opportunities to help the library.
"He was an absolute gentleman and a joy to be around," remarked
Library Administrator JoAnn Rogers. "He loved it when kids made the
connection that he was the statue and came up to talk to him. He did
so much for the library. He laid a lot of groundwork for the Foundation
when it began."
* The Euless Animal Shelter recently underwent
renovations to improve its facility. The shelter was originally
built in 1977 and this winter the animal shelter received a well
deserved face lift. Alt -new tile, carpet and paint were installed,
as well as a new office area with desks and counter tops. A
completely new kitchen was set up and the entire kennel area
is epoxy coated which assists with sanitary issues. The
shelter's new appearance is phenomenal, if we don't say so
ourselves.
Please stop by to see the nice new look of the shelter. While
you're there, go ahead and adopt a dog or cat for your family.
While our shelters are nice to visit, they'd much rather come
live with you.
Euless residents Kennia and Lilibeth Sepulveda sit with the
Lloyd Baldwin statue in front of the library.
Lloyd was always looking for new volunteers to join the Euless
Library Foundation. He managed to talk Curtis Brown into simply
attending some meetings of the ELF to see if he liked it. During his
third meeting, unbeknownst to Curtis, Lloyd stood up to welcome
their new guests and announce that Curtis would be the new
Christmas Parade Float Chair.
"I'd been had. I will probably always be traumatized by that
moment," Curtis joked. "However, I am proud to say that our float won
2nd place last year."
Boyce Byers, a founding member of the Euless Library Foundation
said, "Whenever he said he was going to do something, you might as
well forget fighting him on it and help him out because it was going to
get done. We all have lost a wonderful person who did lots of work in
our community that no one ever knew anything about. He was the
backbone of the Foundation and still is."
"He's still sitting in front of the library and we don't dare do
anything wrong because his eyes are on us."
In September 2003, Lloyd was named Director Emeritus of the
Euless Library Foundation and a lifetime member for his dedication
and service.
Lloyd Robert Baldwin was a Euless treasure who will always be
remembered for his caring for Euless and everything about it. The
legacy he leaves with the Library is with people who care as much as
he did.

Ron Young is the Director of Public Works for Euless but
he is the Fire Department's number one fan. Ron recently
experienced first hand the quality of work that the Euless
Fire Department performs.
One Saturday, Ron was doing some yard work in the front
yard and started seeing spots. He decided to sit down and
take a break and the next thing he knew his neighbors were
waking him up to see if he was okay. After a brief
conversation, they called 911 and the Euless Fire
Department was on the scene in three minutes.
The Fire Department hooked him up to a defibrillator. His
blood pressure was 50/30 and the paramedics started IV's in
both his arms. He was up to 136/70 when he arrived at the
hospital, but it started to fall again and due to the severe
muscle damage to his heart the drug agents were not
working.
The type of heart attack Ron suffered is known as a
Posterior Myocardial Effusion, which basically means a
severe heart attack in the backside of his heart.
The Fire Department recently activated a new protocol
called Rapid Cardiac Intervention Protocol, which allows the
paramedics to transmit the vital signs of a patient directly to
the hospital and into the hands of a cardiac surgeon. While
the patient is en route, the physician is able to review the
statistics and determine whether or not they will require
surgery. If surgery is deemed necessary, the cath team is able
to scrub up and prepare during the hospital transport.
Within 30 minutes of arriving in the ER, they can be sent
directly to surgery, whereas before it would have taken
anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours.
Once taken to Baylor Medical Center of Irving, Ron was
immediately admitted to the ICU wing and went into surgery
within 30 minutes to repair damage to his heart. Euless is
one of only a handful of EMS medical control systems that is
currently administering the Rapid Cardiac Intervention
Protocol.
"The care that was started in the field made all the
difference, all the way to the rapid cardiac intervention
protocol. To go from doing yard work to being in front of the
surgeon for open heart surgery in two hours is phenomenal,"
said Jeff Morris EMS Division Chief.
"He was in extremely critical condition and from an EMS
chiefs perspective, I can't say enough about how well the
response team worked together on him! The difference they
made in this guy's life is unbelievable. It just gives you goose
bumps."
"The fire department has a great group of people there,"
said Ron. "I know they would say they were just doing their
job, but their job is saving lives and they do make a
difference. I'm glad that we have the latest technology in
place and I hope it helps to save someone else's life too."

It is both a happy and sad day with the announcement
that after nearly 29 years with the Euless Fire Department
longtime employee Captain
Ronnie McClendon has decided
to retire.
Ronnie began his career with
the Euless Fire Department in
1975. Working his way up
through the ranks to Captain,
his official retirement date was
April 10, 2004.
His contributions to this

We've saved the best for last!
The day you've been waiting for is finally here. The
construction on Main Street has been completed, ahead of
schedule, and looks great! Main Street was widened to
include medians for left -turn lanes and masonry walls
were added on both sides. Walking trails were installed
and utilities were relocated so that the road between
Highway 10 and Midway Road could be widened to
accommodate a continuous left -turn lane.
We are now ready for the last phase of the Main Street
project. Decorative trail lighting will be installed and
landscaping will begin in September for optimal planting
conditions. The streetscape design and engineering were
completed entirely by City staff. The design along the
pedestrian path will be plant masses incorporating
shrubs, canopy trees, small trees, ornamental grasses, site
furnishings and smaller decorative pedestrian lighting.
The medians will also have plant massing and ornamental
tree plantings. The plant material being selected is native
and will help reduce maintenance requirements.
The City of Euless thanks you for your patience during
this project and devotion to our Main Street Merchants.
We would like to extend a special thank you to those
merchants that participated in our sign program. The
landmark signs create a very attractive end result and we
appreciate all of the merchants' assistance. Please help
our Main Street merchants thrive now that the
construction is complete. We think it was well worth it.
Euless Main Street is now the beautiful front door to our
city that we've been anticipating.
Just wait! It gets even better!

The Euless Fire Department Evolves
by Gary McKamie, Deputy City Manager
On a recent Saturday morning, a middle-aged Euless
resident was finishing his weekly lawn work and began to feel
weak and suffer blurred vision, so he laid down in his yard. A
neighbor saw this and came over to check on him. After a
brief conversation between the two, the Euless Fire
Department was summoned to help and within 3 to 4
minutes, Euless Firefighter/Paramedics were at the man's
side. He was quickly connected to state-of-the-art electro-
cardiogram equipment and the data gathered was instantly
transmitted to a cardiac team at a nearby hospital. An
intravenous line was placed in the man's arm and life-saving
drugs were administered at the direction of physicians 10
miles away. All of this drama occurred in the man's yard.
The man had suffered a serious heart attack, causing a tear
in the wall of his heart. He was in critical need of emergency
cardiac care, which resulted in immediate surgery at the
hospital. The men who were providing the care were not
medical doctors, but rather extremely well-trained City of
Euless Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedics working as
members of a team providing real-time care.
The Euless Fire Department had its start many years ago
simply as a group of volunteers equipped with only buckets
and burlap bags. They often fought grass fires, but had no
equipment to fight a structure fire. Their first vehicle was a
donated truck chassis on which the volunteers built a pump
and tank. The tank was filled from local stock ponds, as there
was no water system in place. As the area began to grow and
Euless became a city in 1953, the need for additional fire
service became more demanding and a more organized
volunteer fire department evolved. The fledgling city
acquired some very basic fire equipment through local bank
loans and donations. The fire department became a paid,
professional department in the late 1960's. Their main
purpose was to fight fires as ambulance service was provided
by private companies within the region. For many years, an
Arlington funeral home sent ambulances to Euless as
needed. These were primarily station wagons with a driver
and a person trained in first aid. The response time was
about 15-20 minutes at best. A private ambulance provider
later provided service from Richland Hills with similar
equipment and response times. A critically injured or ill
person stood little chance of survival with such response
times and minimally trained attendants.
In 1983 HEB Hospital began providing professionally
trained and equipped paramedic ambulance service to
Euless, which significantly reduced response times and lives
were saved. In 1988 the Euless City Council authorized the
Euless Fire Department to begin providing paramedic level
ambulance service. Today, highly skilled, trained, and
dedicated Firefighter/Paramedics staff 2 Mobile Intensive
Care Unit ambulances around the clock. They work under
the direction of a medical doctor and have the capability to
perform a wide range of technical procedures normally
associated with an emergency room. Their equipment allows
a physician in the emergency room to see the patient's vital
signs and heart rhythm before the patient is even loaded into
the ambulance. Their intervention within minutes provides
a critical patient, particularly cardiac patients, the best
chance to make it to the hospital alive and stable. The
paramedic's contact with the emergency room physicians
allows the cardiac team to be assembled and prepared to take
action as soon as the patient is rolled into the hospital. This
teamwork and technology saves lives that 10 years ago would
have been lost.
The man in the yard is a friend to many in Euless. His
survival is a story of miracles, a story of skilled surgeons and
hospital personnel, and last but certainly not least, a story of
what those dedicated people who are called to the fire service
do for the people of our community each and every day.
Local government provides many different services to
citizens, however, there is none more important than to play
a part in saving a life.

The Euless Library Foundation is
currently working on a new art project for
the library called "Blooms of
Enlightenment." The project will be made
up of glass art created by art professor
David Keens. Professor Keens studied in
Italy and is an instructor at the University
of Texas at Arlington.
The multi -colored glass blooms, leaves
and vines will weigh around 2 tons and will
be designed to evoke images of growing,
blooming and floral elements. The project
will be installed in the south window of the
Library which is ideally suited for a
sculpture of this design and magnitude.
Professor Keens has studied how the
sunlight hits the glass throughout the day
so that the colored blooms will be placed in
just the right spot. If you would like to get
involved with the Euless Library
Foundation, please contact the Library at

Parks &
Community
Services
Help keep our parks clean, safe and beautiful for
all to enjoy!
The City of Euless Parks and Community Services
Department encourages families, neighborhoods,
civic groups, businesses and even individuals to get
involved in the preservation and enhancement of
the City of Euless parks system. The parks system
and its facilities are enjoyed by many residents and
appreciated by all. It contributes to the quality of
life enjoyed by residents and provides a foundation
to foster ongoing economic and commercial
development of the community. Continued
vigilance is needed to maintain a high quality of
Parks and Community Services facilities and
programming that our residents have come to
expect. By participating in the "Adopt-A-Park/Trail
Program," volunteers can donate time and
resources to give special care to a City park by
helping maintain, beautify, enhance and keep our
parks safe for all to enjoy.
Eligible Sites
The City of Euless parks system includes over 600
acres and nearly 8 miles of trails throughout its 17
parks. Any park or trail recognized as a City of
Euless park and/or recreational facility as detailed
in the City of Euless parks master plan is eligible
and worthy of an "Adopt-A-Park/Trail" partner. If
you need assistance in selecting a site, please
contact the City of Euless Parks & Community
Services Department and we'll be happy to work
with you to identify the perfect match!
How it Works
Once a park/trail has been selected, the group will
commit through the Parks & Leisure Services
Board to help maintain the adopted area for a
minimum of two years. Within those two years, the
group will perform maintenance a minimum of six
times per adopted year, scheduled through the
Parks & Community Services Department.
Maintenance will include, but is not limited to such
things as litter pick-up, debris removal, minor
park/trail maintenance, etc. The Euless Parks &
Community Services Department will provide
support for each group during the adopted period
and coordinate "on-site" staff support when needed.
We will continue to provide regular maintenance to
each group's adopted area but, with your help we
can accomplish more.
14
Community Pride
Your commitment to the community is crucial in
keeping our park system clean, safe and beautiful. As a
special "Thank You", the Euless Parks & Community
Services Department will acknowledge your
commitment and dedication with a sign in your
adopted park or along your adopted trail and a
certificate of appreciation upon fulfillment and
completion of the adopted period.
By becoming a Euless Parks & Community Services
"Adopt -A Park/Trail" Partner you can:
• Help beautify our parks and community.
• Gain a sense of community and park pride.
• Help preserve our natural resources.
• Enjoy the benefits of outdoor activity.
• Help reduce crime and vandalism.
• Lead by example.
• Meet new people.
• Help in recruiting more groups to participate.
• Contribute to the "Quality of Life" in Euless.
• Help us build a better tomorrow.

Discover the Past...
Heritage Park features two homes that provide a glimpse of life as it once was in north central Texas.
These homes are two of Euless' most cherished landmarks.
Fuller House
The Fuller House provides an unusual glimpse of a Euless residence at its prime as the Mid -Cities area
evolved from a rural environment to a bustling business economy. At a time when most Euless
residents lived in wooden farmhouses, the Fuller House was unique because it was the community's
first brick house. The graceful structdre is typical of fine homes of the 1920s and 1930s.
The house is named for the family of Homer and Edith Fuller, who built the home in 1932. After the
family sold the house, it fell into disrepair and was scheduled for demolition. Fortunately, in 1995, the
City of Euless and the Historical Preservation Committee launched a campaign to save this symbol of
Euless' history. As a result of the united efforts of Taco Bell, Saebit Baptist Church, the Fuller family,
Euless city officials and concerned residents, the house was relocated to Heritage Park.
Himes Log House
The Himes Log House, the oldest structure in Euless, stands as a
rustic testimony to the pioneers who settled North Texas. Among the
finest examples of mid -19th century residences in North Texas, the
one -room house with loft was built in the 1850's by early landowners.
Elisha Adam Euless, who gave his name to a growing local village,
purchased the land in 1879 and probably lived in the house.
In 1888, Euless sold the house and 100 surrounding acres to Andrew
"Andy" Jackson Himes, a farmer. Needing to accommodate his growing
family, Himes enclosed the log house in milled lumber and added
several rooms, thus assuring its preservation throughout the next
century. The house remained in the Himes family for 112 years.
Shirley Himes Melson, great-granddaughter of Andy Himes, donated
the log house in 2000 to the citizens of Euless to preserve the
community's rich history of early settlers. The house was moved from
its original location on Himes Drive near the present Euless Municipal
Complex. Bill Marquis, log house restoration expert, supervised the
relocation and authentic restoration.
