Dear Citizens, 1W IT
Our Texas summer has returned, but we hope you
are finding some nice cool spots to enjoy. We do have
The City o -
so many activities for our citizens of all varieties; Mission St;
movies in the park, golf, library activities, water
sports, ball games of all kinds and a myriad of
activities in our recreation centers. To
provide citi
Have you been to Heritage Park to see the
wonderful old barn being restructured? This is such a
NJnice addition to our historical park. Don't forget the
docent tours on special Saturdays this summer.
Our Euless Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association just celebrated
their tenth anniversary. They volunteer so much time and talent for our q
city and have fun too. The next class starts on August 18 and if you are LJ
interested call Sgt. Gary Landers at the Police Department.
Also, it is time to sign up for Boards and Commissions appointments. If
you are interested in serving on any Board, please call the City Secretary's
office for further information. It's a great way to learn about your city.
Enclosed is an application for the Volunteer of the Year award which
will be presented in November. If you have questions, contact our
Communications Manager. We will recognize the Volunteer, Youth
Volunteer, and Business Volunteer of the Year.
We are so excited about the new art presentation for our city library.
The Euless Library Foundation has worked tirelessly to raise monies for
the art work which will be officially opened in August. The Blooms of
Enlightenment will hang in the south window of the library and is the
first municipal glass art work by David Keens of the University of Texas at
Arlington.
Our newest fire station is coming along and should be completed this
fall. It is located on South Main Street just behind Burger King. The
new fire engine should be here in December.
Two new parks are being completed. Veterans Field will be dedicated
on November 12 and is located at the Parks at Texas Star. The Preserve at
McCormick Park is located off of Fuller Wiser and will be completed next
year. Both parks are great additions to our park system along with the
Trail System that goes from Hwy 157/Industrial to McCormick Park.
But we have a serious problem in our parks and library ....VANDALISM.
Did you know that the vandalism in our parks and city facilities cost
around $20,000 a year, plus the extra work our staff must do to clean up
the vandalism? The vandals desecrate our bronze statues, break into city
vehicles, trees and plants are uprooted, egg our facilities including the
new park, trash the bathrooms, and break up the concrete barriers, and
on and on.
Now I am asking you to please be aware of the sights and sounds you
see in our city. If you see or hear anything that looks like vandals are in
the area, please call our police department at 817-685-1500. We need your
help in keeping our parks clean and safe.
Once again, thank you to all our volunteers who serve our city from
the teen volunteers in the library and all others who give of their time
and talents. You make Euless the great city that it is and TOGETHER WE
ARE BUILDING A BETTER TOMORROW.

This summer, the Euless Public Library
will unveil the culmination of 3 years of
fundraising and hard work, all in the
name of public art. The Blooms of
Enlightenment is a unique blown glass
art project made possible by the Euless
Library Foundation (ELF). It will be
displayed at the south window in the
Library beginning Saturday, August 13.
This sculptural glass installation is the
fifth artproject donated to the Library by
ELF, continuing in the goal of bringing art to the community in an
interesting and educational manner.
The blooms, individually called roundels, takes approximately two hours
and requires as many as four people working together as a team to
create. The roundels are made of small glass pieces, slowly added on to
the work until it creates a piece as large as a pumpkin. Silver leaf is
added to the molten glass for a polished effect when the unique roundels
are inflated into a form.
The 68 roundels, weighing 10-20 pounds each, were created over the
past year by David Keens and students of the UTA Art Department, where
students are trained in the unique art of glass blowing. This program is
the only one of its kind in Texas. Keens has taught at the university since
1974, and is responsible for
building the art glass program
at UTA which began in 1992. A
state-of-the-art glass blowing
facility was recently completed
with more space to
accommodate larger classes
and high temperature
equipment. Most of the
equipment in the new facility
was built by Keens with help
from students using raw steel.
When asked about the end of the project, Keens commented, "I almost
wish it wasn't drawing to a close. It's been a really wonderful experience
that I have enjoyed tremendously. We're thrilled with the progress of the
piece and can't wait to see it installed in the environment it was designed
for. It's going to be spectacular."
ELF President Diane Porterfield noted, "Our excitement is boundless as
we await the installation of Blooms of Enlightenment... the fulfillment of
so much work and generosity of many in our City. This artpiece will
represent a truly significant, innovative approach to allow the public an
opportunity to share the very best art experience possible."
817-685-1400
The Blooms of Enlightenment Open House will be
from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, August 13, and Sunday,
August 14, at the Euless Public Library. Admission is
free and refreshments will be served. The Blooms,
designed and created by artist David Keens and his staff
at the UTA Art Department
Glass Studio, will represent
the fifth project that the
Euless Library Foundation
has provided in the library.
Please come and enjoy all
of the art at the Library.
1. The roundel begins as
small bits of specially
formulated glass that are superheated & rotated until
smooth.
2. Various sizes of the wooden block tool are soaked in
water and used to round the roundel, to get the
molten glass in a particular shape.
3. Colored pieces of glass
have been added during
the process to add
striking, rich color to the
roundel.
4. As the roundel becomes
larger, more assistance is
required and the actual glass blowing begins.
5. Silver leaf is added for a shimmering effect within
the center of the bloom.
6. The molten glass is then placed in an optic mold to
create a series of linear
impressions that form a
subtle visual pattern after
it's blown out.
7. Wooden paddles, which
occasionally catch fire, are
used in the formation to
push and change the shape
into a specific configuration of the bloom. If the shape
is wrong it can cause problems with the structure.
8. A glass stock is added to the back of the roundel,
which will now become the front as the other pole is
cut away from the glass, which will become the
attaching point.
9. Once broken from the
blow pipe, the hole is
enlarged and orange
glass is added as a lipwrap
of contrasting color
around the perimeter.
10. The glass is placed in
the reheating oven one last time and then spun
quickly. The centrifugal force flattens the glass
outward into a shape approximately 41 inches in
diameter.
11. A team member suits up for duty. This suit can
protect up to 1300 degrees for a short period of time.
This job can be most critical to the success of the
bloom.
12. As the pole is cut away from the roundel, the suit
holds the bloom in place as the center is fired flat.
13. The roundel is placed in the kneeling kiln, set at
925 degrees, and is slowly cooled down for 14 hours
for baking. If the glass is cooled too quickly, it can
break the glass.
The finished product
can be seen at the
Euless Library on
August 13 and 14
during the open
house. We hope to
see you there!

Eads Pearls
Dear Earl:
rs plllll 1111
I've seen blue bags lining
MY street on trash days.'
What are these blue bags
used for?
Blue Without a Bag
Dear Blue: ;
In Euless, you can actually recycle
materials instead of throwing them into the
trash stream. In my castle, I have a trash
can with a black bag, a recycling blue bag
and paper grocery sacks set side by side.
Glass bottles and jars; plastic bottles and
containers (#'s 1,2,3,4,5 and 7 only) and
metal, (aluminum, tin and steel) cans all
go in the blue bag. Papers and paper
products like cereal box board and junk
mail all go in the paper sacks. Whatever is
left over goes in the trash bags and heads
to the landfill.
Some recycling hints:
You do not have to remove labels or crush
cans anymore.

Please rinse out the containers before
I throwing them in the blue bag.
Remove caps or lids because they aren't
recycled.
Do not recycle aerosol cans or hazardous
materials.
If you have a lot of phone books, magazines,
and newspapers it's fine to tie them into
bundles.
Corrugated cardboard can either be put into
the sacks or tied in bundles. Just be sure your
bundles weigh less than 50 pounds.
Remember to keep the bluebags and paper
sack separate from the trash (at least three
feet is best) from your trash can on your
recycling pick-up day, or else the drivers for
Allied Waste Services (AWS), formerly Trinity
Waste Services (TWS), may accidentally pick
them up as trash.
They should be at your moat by 7.•00 a.m. the
day of the pick up.
The Earl of Euless
P.S. You can also Talk Trash by calling the
Recycling Hotline at 817-685-1825.

No Cause for Alarm Board & Commission Appointments
DFW Airport provides world-class training to
Public Safety professionals from many different
Police and Fire agencies. The training facilities
lie on the western border of the airport, so
Euless residents often see or hear this training
occur.
A state of the art burn site is located north of
Euless. This facility simulates an aircraft fire
and produces a large plume of black smoke.
Residents often see this smoke and become
alarmed. The smoke is simply a by-product of
a critical training exercise.
DFW Airport has maintained an outdoor
firearms range since it opened in 1974. Euless
residents living east of North Main Street may
occasionally hear large numbers of gunshots in
the distance.
Both of these facilities serve as reminders of
the serious business of public safety
professionals to provide safety and security to
our community and surrounding areas.
The City of Euless is currently accepting
applications for volunteer positions on various
Boards and Commissions to be appointed in
October 2005. Time and frequency of meetings
vary, depending upon the board or commission on
which you serve.
The following Boards and Commissions will have
openings: Civil Service Commission, Economic
Development Advisory Board, Historical
Preservation Committee, Library Board, Parks and
Leisure Services Board, Planning & Zoning
Commission, Teen Court Advisory Board and
Zoning Board of Adjustment.
Applications and additional information on these
boards are on the website www.euless.org/cso.
You may also contact the City Secretary's Office
for an application at 817-685-1434. Applications
must be completed and returned to the City
Secretary's Office by Friday, September 16, 2005.

Montana Skies
Jonathan and Jennifer Adams, the originators of
Montana Skies, began writing their own
arrangements to classics and composing music
for themselves when they discovered that music
written for cello/guitar was very rare. Jonathan
and Jennifer adopted their name in 2003, after
the release of their CD "Montana Skies."
Montana Skies creates a unique new sound with
the unusual pairing of cello and fingerstyle
guitar. Combining classic with modern, the
group has created their own "new acoustic"
sound with innovative original compositions and
arrangements.
Montana Skies' debut recording Montana Skies
reached #1 on world and instrumental music
radio charts in April and May of 2004 and helped
them win the prestigious title of "Best New
Artist" in the 2004 Lifestyle Radio Awards.

1 P.M. - 5 p.m.
Heritage Park, 201 Cullum Dr.
Celebrate an old fashioned Christmas at
historic Heritage Park. Members of the Euless
Historical Preservation Committee will
conduct guided
tours of the 151
year-old Himes Log
House, the Fuller
House and the
McCormick Barn—
all decorated for the
holiday season. You
can listen to choirs sing your Christmas
favorites, visit our petting zoo or ride the
Christmas choo-choo. Kids can visit with Santa
& make their own Christmas ornaments. We
will have free refreshments for everyone.
Holiday cheer plus Euless history wrapped up
in one great afternoon!
JOIN OUR FAMILY OF VOLUNTEERS
The City of Euless Parks & Community Services
Department produces several special events
throughout the year. Each one is special and unique
and is centered on the family.
We need volunteers for each event in order to make
them the best events possible and because without
volunteers our events would not survive. If you
would like to help your community, have a great time
and be a part of something special, then join our
"Family of Volunteers." For more information call
Jerry Poteet at 817-685-1449.
CHOIR GROUPS NEEDED

would be interested, please call Jerry at 817-685-1449.

While enjoying yourself at Arbor Daze, we hope you
received one of the 10,000 tree saplings that were given
away free by the Parks Department. The majority of these
trees; Oaks, Pecans, Pistache, etc. are
from nuts/seeds gathered in our City
parks and facilities which in turn are
planted, grown and nurtured in our
Greenhouse. These trees not only help
celebrate Arbor Day, but are used to
restock our parks and for other TREE CI'T'Y USA
programs throughout the City.

Preservation —
How
Can I Help?
The Parks Department would like to invite our citizens to
assist us in this endeavor. When the nuts/seeds start falling
(usually in late fall) gather up to 100 in a sack with a label
indicating the type of tree it is (if you know) along with
your name(s) and phone number. Please include a leaf from
the tree in your sack, and turn in your sack at the Midway
Recreation Center, 300 W. Midway Drive.
Normally only one tree is given out to each person during
Arbor Daze, but for those who do assist us, we would like to
reward them with five trees of their choice. Please help us
give the gift that gives us a lifetime of love. To ensure
timely propagation, all nuts/seeds must be turned in by
November 15.
Become a "Euless Tree Bud" and share seeds for trees.
For additional information contact
Jimmy Beck at 817-685-1652.

How can I support Heritage Park and the City of Euless
Historical Preservation Committee? Our community has so
many talented people -- your volunteer support will make
Heritage Park and the Historical Committee a success.
The City of Euless Historical Preservation Committee's
purpose is to preserve the culture, genealogy, archives and
structures of the City of Euless by preserving the visible
reminders and providing protection for the historical
treasures of the City. Heritage Park's volunteer training
program covers the rich history of Euless and general
museum operations. The program educates and trains
interested candidates for responsible volunteer positions
with Heritage Park and the Historical Preservation
Committee. A variety of volunteer opportunities are offered
in the following areas:
Museum Collections, Educational Programming, Tour
Guide (Saturday Positions), Outreach Programming,
Special Events, Office Support
The volunteer program includes an orientation session to
better understand the selected position and general
museum procedures.
Being a Euless Historical Committee volunteer affords you
a great chance to enjoy a challenge, meet new friends with
similar interests, learn or update skills and, most of all,
have a fun time helping to educate the public about the
wonderful history of Euless.
WE provide the interesting training and location - YOU
provide the volunteer time to help preserve history and
educate visitors. If you have any questions about the
program, please contact the City of Euless Parks and
Community Services Department at 817-685-1649.
