HomeMy WebLinkAboutEuless Today Spring/Summer 2005t4r,
Dear Citizens,
ON
After such a rainy winter season, isn't it just
wonderful to enjoy the beautiful spring days in our
gardens, the parks, the golf course and all the other
great places we enjoy.
This newsletter is filled with many activities for you
to enjoy this season. And, there are activities for all
ages and abilities, too. Do get out and enjoy the good
weather before our hot summer days.
We will be having a city and school election the first Saturday in May
with early voting before. What a freedom it is for us in America to be able
to vote freely in an election without harm and scare tactics.
We have completed our Main Street project, but still have a few
amenities to add. The attractive lighting, lovely landscaping, wide walking
trails and of course the really sensational monument signs our businesses
have put in front of their establishments. Doesn't the street look like one
we can be proud of? Those monument signs really do make a difference.
Thank you to all who participated.
The Library has had some additional landscaping at the entrance garden
as well as necessary upkeep inside. The Library Foundation is excited about
the fabulous new glass sculpture that will be installed this summer. Many
thanks to all those who made this project possible.
Phase Three of the Parks at Texas Star is coming right along. There was
some delay due to all the rain this winter, but the staff is working diligently
to catch up. The Veterans Field will be beautiful and we are looking forward
to a grand dedication on Veterans Day.
We are excited about the LoneStar Baseball team that will be playing at
the Parks at Texas Star. The teams consist of college baseball players from
across the country that will be spending two months this summer playing
in our Parks at Texas Star. Do plan to attend some of the exciting games.
And what a great line-up for the Arbor Daze Festival! We are really
looking forward to a wonderful festival this year.....with no rain. Everyone
was such a good sport last year when we had to cancel our first Arbor Daze
in sixteen years. This year will be extra special and we hope you all plan to
attend. You will need to find out about the special remote parking areas
that have transportation to the Arbor Daze site.
If you haven't tried the Sunday Brunch at Raven's Grill you have missed
a treat. Our chef prepares a bountiful buffet filled with many delicious
treats, as well as an omelet station. Sitting out on the porch and watching
the golfers is a treat too.
Our last project in the 1998 bond issue voted by our citizens will be
Pipeline Road from Highway 10 to Raider Drive. We will begin
construction this summer. That will complete all the major thoroughfares
in our city. In the meantime, we continue to renovate our older streets and
sidewalks.
Enjoy our springtime and do get out and volunteer your services for the
many activities provided by the city. Remember TOGETHER WE ARE
BUILDING A BETTER TOMORROW FOR OUR CITIZENS.

Each year Euless employees nominate the peer they feel has given or
themselves over and beyond the call of duty.
In 2004, Tammy Renteria, Benefits Tech for the Human Resources
Department, was named Employee of the Year.
One colleague noted that "Tammy has done
an excellent job helping maintain employee
applications and getting them to me in a
timely manner." New employees continually
compliment her on her professionalism,
helpfulness and willingness to help find the
answer to the problem.
She has been a constant figure during the
changes in the HR department.
Assistant City Manager, Loretta Getchell said, "I am so proud that
Tammy was selected as the employee of the year. She never has a bad
day and always greets her fellow employees and citizens with a cheerful
smile. She has a great attitude and is a wonderful representative for
the City of Euless."
Congratulations Tammy for the well-deserved award of Employee of
the Year!
Some people might say a dog's bark is worse than his bite. If you
live next door to a barking dog, you know that to be true.
The City of Euless has a noise ordinance, which states an animal
that "barks, whines, howls, crows, cackles or makes any noise
excessively and continuously" that disturbs any person in the
immediate vicinity is prohibited. Their owners may be subject to
a municipal court fine.
The City Council has also adopted a new "Pooper Scooper"
ordinance that will keep Euless clean and pleasant for residents.
All animal owners are required to clean up after their pet on
public or private property. A person who violates this ordinance
will be subject to a municipal court fine.

Election _ May 7
The Euless City Council has made a strong
commitment to keeping Euless looking good,
while remaining business -friendly. As part of
this initiative, the city has revised the
existing sign ordinance to enhance the look
of local businesses, while providing them
ample opportunity to advertise their business
location.
City staff will be working with properties to
come in to compliance by June 1, 2005. The
City will be contacting property owners to
work with them towards this effort.
The sign ordinance is available on the city's
web site www.euless.org/planning or may be
obtained from the Planning & Development
Department.
The revised portions of the sign ordinance,
adopted in February, generally included the
following conditions:
• Fagade signage must not exceed more than
30% of the exterior fagade, including
windows and doors.
• Banners may only be displayed with a
Special Event Permit. This permit is now
available four times annually for a 14 -day
period with a 30 days window in between
permits.
• Corporate flags may be flown from a flag
pole, as long as they meet certain
requirements.
• The Special Event permit will continue to
allow balloons and large inflatable items, but
they must be located 15-25 feet from the
curb for safety reasons.
We are confident that these revisions will
serve the residents as well as the businesses
of Euless well. If you have questions about
the ordinance, please contact the Planning &
Development Department at (817) 685-1630.

by Gary McKamie, Deputy City Manager
The 1995 graduating class of Trinity High School
was made up of 482 young lives ready to change
the world. Among this group was Kyle Eggers.
Kyle was born in Grand Island, Nebraska and
moved to Euless when he was 12 years old. His
mother, Diane, works for the City of Euless as the
Senior Citizen's Coordinator. His dad, Keith, is a
frequent volunteer for the City, including service
on the Planning & Zoning Commission and the
Parks & Community Services Department. Kyle,
along with his sister Kristi, enjoyed the typical
activities of a suburban youth. While attending
Harwood Junior High, Kyle played football and ra
track. At Trinity, he had been active on the cross-
country team. As Kyle walked across the stage of
the Tarrant County Convention Center to accept
his High School Diploma, little did he or his
parents know that within 10 years he would play a
significant role in truly changing the world.
Kyle joined the United States Army in August
1995. Following basic training, he returned to
Euless for a short assignment assisting local Army
Recruiters at Trinity and Bell High Schools. He
was later assigned to Hawaii, Yakima Washington,
and The Republic of Korea. While stationed in
Yakima, he met the young lady who would
become his wife, Jennifer. Kyle and Jennifer had
twin boys, Kaden and Tegan born in 2001 and a
third son, Zane in 2003. Life was good for the
young family. Kyle loved serving his country and
loved his family. In August 2004, Kyle was
deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi
Freedom. As a Staff Sergeant he was a Section
Leader assigned as the Wingman on a Humvee to
provide security patrol in the region around Al
Habbaniyah in central Iraq. In early November
Kyle was injured when his patrol was hit by a
roadside bomb. While the injury was not life
threatening, it did allow him the option to leave
Iraq. To no ones surprise, he elected to remain
with his unit.
On December 5, 2004 Kyle's patrol was once again
struck by a roadside bomb. Staff Sergeant Kyle
Andrew Eggers lost his life as a result of his
injuries. He was buried at the Dallas -Fort Worth
National Cemetery with full military honors. Kyle

died fighting for a cause

On January 30, 2005,
the eyes of the world
were on Iraq. For the
first time in over 50
years, democratic
elections were held. 14.2

eligible to vote and a

exercise their new found freedom. Their right to vote
had been secured by the sacrifice of 1,433 brave
American service men and women. Expressed in
another way, each American life lost in Iraq secured the
right of 10,000 Iraqi citizens to cast their vote for
democracy. Televised newscasts depicted the hopeful,
smiling faces of Iraqi men, women and children at the
polling places enjoying their first taste of the freedom
we often take for granted. As I watched the news, it
occurred to me that Kyle Eggers, a brave young man
from Euless, Texas, had paid the ultimate price to allow
that group of Iraqis the privilege to celebrate their
votes.
Kyle will be honored for his contribution to freedom at
Trinity High School this summer. Exact date and time
is currently pending.

"powerhouse instrumental and vocal talent...
(Los Angeles Times)
"Rare mix of musicianship, humor and inspiration... "
(Billboard Magazine)
Trout Fishing in America seems almost as
intriguing as a picture of this musical duo - Ezra
Idlet stands six- feet nine inches and Keith
Grimwood five -feet five. What is more intriguing
is the musical career these two have carved out
in nearly three decades of writing, recording and
performing together. The duo was just
nominated for their second Grammy in the
category of "Best Musical Album for Children."
TFIA has been playing music that delights
children and astounds parents for more than 25
years.

Brave Combo. Rarely has a band name been
more appropriate. The group started its
journey back in 1979 as a Denton -based New
Wave polka band. You read that right; A New
Wave polka band. The band clicked and
launched a stunning 25 -year career. Brave
Combo is America's premier eclectic polka
band, and a Grammy -winning one at that.
On March 21, 2004, they played Oktoberfest in
the beloved American suburb of Springfield on
an episode of "The Simpsons." The show's
creator Matt Groening is a devoted Brave
Combo fan. "They prove you can be hip and
still be happy," says Groening. "Really, Brave
Combo should have its own cartoon."

DID YOU KNOW.
The Spice of Life "kitchen band" --- with an
ancient piano, a bass made from a washtub, a
broom handle and a single elastic string plus a
few kitchen utensils like a cheese grater, and
spoons for percussion --- was the first band to
ever play at the then How to Grow Lawn and
Garden Show, now known as Arbor Daze.
Together they were said to have played "a lovely
sounding racket."
The Euless Parks & Community Services
Department produces numerous special
events throughout the year. Each one is
special, unique and is centered on the
family.
This is where we need your help. If you
would like to help your community, have a
great time, be a part of something special,
then join our "Family of Volunteers."

Over 150,000 free trees have been distributed to
visitors of the Arbor Daze festival in an attempt
to beautify Euless and show our commitment
to the importance of trees. The Arbor Daze
plant sale and free tree giveaway takes place
throughout the festival to promote trees.
Where do all of these
trees come from you
might ask? Does the
City of Euless have a
tree farm that
residents don't know
about? Well, the Parks
Department takes
extra care in raising
and cultivating these
tree saplings all year
just to give away at the Arbor Daze festival.
This year, thousands of free trees consisting of
Chinese Pistache and Shumard Red Oak trees
will be given away again at the free tree
giveaway tent. In addition, the plant sale will
have hanging baskets, houseplants, bedding
plants and a variety of vegetables and herbs for
your garden.
Arbor Daze is a free -family festival that
promotes tree planting and the importance of
trees to the environment. Arbor Daze was
founded on the premise set forth by the
National Arbor Day Foundation and has won
numerous local and international awards. The
festival is now recognized as the largest annual
Arbor Day celebration in America. The
attendance has more than doubled over the
last seven years. This year's festival is expected
to attract over 250,000 attendees.

mtheast Transportatic
If a Euless resident is in need of medical
transportation anywhere in Tarrant County, they can
call the Northeast Transportation Service (NETS)
and schedule a trip through the Wheels Program.
Wheels, primarily funded by United Way, is a
donation -based program that assists anyone without
transportation, not just seniors or disabled citizens.
Reservations are made on a medical priority scale
depending on the procedure, so the earlier a
reservation is made, the better. The trips run from
5:30 a.m. — 4 p.m.
For more information, please contact NETS at
