HomeMy WebLinkAboutEuless Today Summer/Fall 200792,e,e,1y14.,orw fit & 141c72 Dear Citizens, How fortunate we are to have such lovely green landscapes, lakes full of water and better ozone days. Did you know that with all the rain we have had it cleared up the air and we have the best ozone days in years? We welcome our two newest council persons Tim Stinneford and Perry Bynum. Both gentlemen have volunteered for Euless for many years and decided to take the next step and volunteer full time. They are eager to serve our community and to get to know more of you. Sadly, we are saying farewell to our long serving council person, Carl Tyson. Carl has served over thirty years with volunteer service to Euless. Many years were on the Planning and Zoning Commission followed by years of service on the city council. We wish him well. We will be saying farewell to our former City Manager very soon. Joe Hennig has been with the city of Euless for fifteen years, eight of those as City Manager. Many changes have occurred during Joe's tenure mainly with our infrastructure and city buildings. Joe has been a leader in our community volunteering for local boards and charities. Probably the highlight of Joe's career was implementing the "peace pipe" with the DFW Airport, thereby getting the car rental facility in the city of Euless. It has truly been a joy working with Joe and we all will miss him and his cheerful personality. We wish him well. Our new City Manager is Gary McKamie. Gary has been working with the city of Euless for thirty four years so he probably knows more about the city than anyone. He was with the police department for many years rising to Chief of Police before moving to Administration to be Assistant City Manager then Deputy City Manager. We will have a very smooth transition as Gary knows all the employees and has worked with the city council for eight years. We wish him well. As you can see there are many changes occurring in our city but we all know that change can be good. We are working on our Facilities Plan and you will see some changes at Texas Star Conference Centre, the Library and the Senior Citizens Center within this next year. In the meantime, the Public Works facility located on south Westpark Way and Pipeline Road is now completed. The Public Works employees have waited a long, long time for a home in Euless. Previously they were located on Central Drive in Bedford. The summer reading program at the Library is almost completed and I hope many of you joined the program and enjoyed our Library this summer. If you locate the bulletin board in the children's section you can see how many children participated by their "sail boats." The Library continues to have educational as well as entertaining programs for all our citizens. Do check out the latest garden reading area at the library. Will you please plan to participate with your Euless neighbors in welcoming the Troops at the DFW Airport during the week of August 20-26? This has been such a heartwarming program that has been supported throughout North Texas. Our city has been a participant since the beginning of the program and we are so proud of the many of you who have been there to welcome our troops. Please read through the many activities listed in Euless Today and participate but better still VOLUNTEER your time and talents. We have the best volunteers anywhere and we always welcome more. Water Conservation Ordinance Even with the record rains this summer, Euless residents should not take water for granted. It proves the point even more that water levels can not be predicted from one year to the next and we all need to make an effort to conserve water. After the drought of 2006, City of Euless officials realized that we need to protect this precious resource by enacting measures that make sense for Euless residents. Effective July 1, all Euless residents fall under a new water conservation ordinance that prohibits watering outdoors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. year-round. The new rules will apply to City water customers who use automatic and non -automatic irrigation systems and garden hose -attached sprinklers to water their lawns. Watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. is an inefficient method of maintaining yards. Water from sprinklers and irrigations systems is lost by evaporation due to heat and wind. In addition, daylight watering as well as domestic use, places additional demands on the water treatment plant. The ordinance does provide for watering home foundations lawns and new landscape plantings by handheld hose, drit irrigation or soaker hose. For more information pleas( contact the Public Works department by calling 817-685 1694. 817-685-1400 City Manager Joe Hennig to Retire City Manager Joe Hennig announced his retirement after 15 years with the city. With his announcement, Hennig stated that the city's employees, directors and department managers are the most dedicated and hard working that he has worked with during his career. "They are a tremendous asset to the City of Euless," said Hennig. Hennig, 59, has served as the city's manager since 1999, after serving Euless as Director of Development Services, Assistant City Manager and Deputy City Manager. As City Manager, Hennig oversaw much development in Euless along with significant bond projects that improved the major roads and infrastructure in Euless including the revitalization of Euless Main Street and Pipeline Road. Hennig was personally involved with the construction of Texas Star Athletic Complex and the DFW Car Rental Facility. Conservative budgeting and innovative development under Hennig's guidance has allowed Euless to remain in a strong financial position. When asked his feelings on retiring after so many years, Hennig commented, "The citizens of Euless make our great city what it is today. There are many founding families that have been here since the beginning and they are the ones still volunteering at events, attending City Council meetings and making things happen. They donate their time and energy to Euless because they love it. "Gary McKamie has been a tremendously dedicated Deputy City Manager and talented leader who has generously devoted himself to Euless. He has been a great colleague and partner for the past eight and a half years and I couldn't have asked for anyone better to work with on the tough issues that have faced Euless throughout the years.
