HomeMy WebLinkAboutEuless Today Summer/Fall 2008Dear Citizens,
The good ole summertime is half way through and before
we know it school will begin. In the meantime, please enjoy
all the wonderful amenities Euless has to offer.
Our May elections returned Leon Hogg to our city
council. Donna Micken was elected for her first term and we
welcome Donna to our council. Please get to know Donna by
reading the article inside this newsletter.
Congratulations to Mary Sanchez on her selection as the
911 Telecommunicator of the Year and to Debbie Torrez for
her selection as the 911 International Trainer of the Year. Officer Tamara Barnes has
been selected for the Silent Hero Award. These three members of the Euless staff
are very special for the diligent work they do daily. And, read all about the Police
Awards for the year. Congratulations to each and every honoree.
Have you seen all the improvements to our library? The new carpeting
throughout the building, the new study rooms, new furniture and the new
Genealogy/Historical room are all so beautiful. Our library continues to be a
shining star in our city and throughout our community.
Besides all the new renovations, the library has had many interesting programs
and the summer reading program has had more readers than ever. The Euless
Library Foundation is busy taking orders for the new art piece for the library.
Citizens can select a tile as their gift to the art piece and have your name inscribed
and there are several sizes to choose from.
The new Dog Park opened in early May and is much appreciated by both the dogs
and owners and much used! All parks have offered a variety of venues this summer
and it's amazing to see how many citizens from other communities come to enjoy
our parks. The flowers along the byways truly add to the beauty of our city. The
Parks department does such a good job especially in this hot summer weather.
The Texas Star Conference Centre is being renovated and will be such a fine
addition to the current facility. The construction is on time and hopefully will be
completed in early 2009. Besides the addition there will be renovations throughout
the entire facility. During the construction all facilities are open and busy. The
Raven's Grill is a great place to eat especially for Sunday brunch. The golf course
remains one of the best courses around the county. There are tournaments almost
daily, but still room for other golfers to play. Check the web site for specials
throughout the summer.
It's time again to nominate citizens for the Volunteers of the Year. We need
nominees for Student Volunteer, Business Volunteer, Outstanding Volunteer and
Lifetime Volunteer. Please see page 11 to submit your nomination.
Also, it is time to consider serving on the Boards and Commissions. There are
several vacancies and many opportunities to serve. Applications are available in the
City Secretary's office. Applicants will be interviewed by the City Council members
before selections are made. New members will take office in January, but have the
opportunity to learn more of their committee work before then.
The Citizen's Fire Academy and Citizen's Police Academy are accepting
applications for the next session. Classes begin in August and meet every Thursday
night for twelve weeks. Call now for your application as the classes fill up fast.
The City Council and city staff are busy preparing the budget for the next year.
All budgets are discussed and voted upon at the City Council meetings. There
will be public hearings and any citizen may come and ask questions and learn more
about the budget process. This process takes place in September and must be
finalized by the first of October. Please know that all Council meetings are open to
the public and take place on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.
Thank you to all the wonderful VOLUNTEERS that have shared their time and
talents for our summer activities. You are special and make Euless even more
special! We continue to BUILD A BETTER TOMORROW TOGETHER.

The City of Euless is currently accepting applications for
volunteer positions on various Boards and Commissions to be
appointed in October 2008. Time and frequency of meetings
vary, depending upon the board or commission on which you
serve.
The following Boards and Commissions will have openings:
Civil Service Commission, HEB Teen Court Advisory Board,
Historical Preservation Committee, Library Board, Parks and
Leisure Services Board, Planning & Zoning Commission, and
Zoning Board of Adjustment.
Applications and additional information on these boards are on
the website www.euless.org/cso. You may also contact the City
Secretary's Office for an application at (817) 685-1434.
Applications must be completed and returned to the City
Secretary's Office by Friday, September 12, 2008.
A new ordinance in Euless now requests owners to register their
dogs and cats residing within the City of Euless. Registering
your pet will allow Euless Animal Services to quickly locate you
and ensure that your pet is safely returned to you.
Voluntary participation in the dog and cat registration will be at
no cost to the citizens. If an unregistered dog or cat is picked up
by Animal Control a registration fee of $10 will be assessed
before the dog or cat is released from the Animal Shelter.
When you register your pet, your pet's description, veterinarian
contact information and owner information is kept in a
database. You do not have to bring the pet to the Animal Shelter
in order to register it, however, please provide a copy of a
current rabies vaccination for the pet. You will receive an ID Tag
for your pet with your pet's personal identification number.
No one ever expects that their pet might get lost, but no matter
how cautious you are or how well-trained your pet is, it can
happen. Ensure your pet's safety and register it with the Euless
Animal Shelter today!
Rising gas prices are affecting pocketbooks
everywhere. Many years ago, Euless began looking
at ways to maximize our efficiency with our fleet.
The City of Euless fleet currently operates 20
vehicles on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also
known as propane, as an alternative fuel source.
These vehicles range from heavy trucks to small
pickups. These units can alternate between gasoline
and propane and are driven on propane in daily
usage 50% of the time. This fuel alternative results
in kinder emissions to the environment. Euless has
also implemented policies that city vehicles will be
a Low Emissions Vehicle, Ultra Low Emissions
Vehicle or a Zero Emissions Vehicle type.
Approximately 95% of the fleet meets this mandate.
Last year, Euless received a $135,000 Clean Fleet
Vehicle Project grant to replace older vehicles that
do not burn fuel as cleanly as some newer models.
Ten cars and pickups were purchased that will help
us achieve our goal of a clean fleet. One of these cars
was a hybrid to test this practical vehicle for
effectiveness. It passed with flying colors.
A look to the near future includes possibly moving
to neighborhood electric vehicles that are battery
operated. These vehicles must remain on roads with
a speed limit of 35 mph or less. This is ideal for local
neighborhood inspections. We will also increase the
number of LPG powered vehicles and hybrids while
downsizing many of the larger pickups depending
on the end user.
With the ever increasing population and influx of
cars, highways and flights from DFW Airport, the
challenge to keep Euless green is increasing daily.
The City of Euless is meeting that challenge
through innovative programs, policies and
procedures that not only save valuable tax dollars,
they make Euless a more sustainable place to work
and live.

Donna Mickan is a retired educator from Trinity
High School. She formerly served on the city's
Economic Development Advisory Board and the
Euless Historical Preservation Committee. She
is a frequent docent at historic Heritage Park
and serves as a Stephen Minister as well as on
the Administrative Board of First United
Methodist Church of Hurst where she sings in
the chancel choir. She has served as her
neighborhood association's president, on the
board and is currently a standing committee
chair for beautification.
Donna and her husband Randell moved to
Euless in 1964. Donna was co-owner and
operator of Bloomtown Florist when it opened
in Euless Town Center in 1981. She and Randell
have been married 47 years and have two
children. Their daughter Marianne Priddy and
husband Michael have two children, Mitchell
and Michelle. Their son Randy and wife Kelly
also have two children, Erin and Samantha.
Their grandchildren range in age, so there are
always many varied activities to enjoy. Donna
loves to travel, play the piano and sing in the
church choir. She is delighted to have the
opportunity to serve the city she loves.
With the influx of gas leasing occurring in our
neighborhoods, the need for more information
about the leasing process and neighborhood
negotiations is great. The City of Euless
coordinated a Euless Gas Lease Forum in April
to give residents an opportunity to ask
questions and get responses directly from the
source.
If you were unable to attend, this forum was
recorded as a resource for residents. You may
still view this forum through streaming video
on the Euless website or on the Euless Cable
Channel 16 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily.
Presenters Ed Ireland, executive director of the
Barnett Shale Energy Education Council and
Robert West, partner in the law office of
Whitaker, Chalk, Swindle and Sawyer, LLP gave
an overview of the drilling process, the benefits
it provides to our community, tips for
neighborhoods negotiating leases and
important clauses to look for in the lease.
Many Euless neighborhoods have formed
coalitions to increase their negotiating power. If
you would like to learn more about groups in
your immediate area, we have created an
interactive map that will connect you directly
with your coalition if one exists.

Euless Revitalization (ER) Program
We are pleased to tell you about the great partnership we
have forged with First Baptist Church Euless, Restoration
Church, and Life Connection Church in Euless. This
program is based on the premise of neighbors helping
neighbors. It provides a much needed helping hand in
repair and updating for a number of homes in Euless for
residents that are in need of assistance. In the true spirit
of community, church congregations have mobilized to
help the families in these homes, and the response has
been astonishing. This inspiring program is already
making a positive impact in Euless and will only continue
to grow. We thank all of these partners for their time,
effort and commitment to Euless! For more information
on this program, visit www.euless.org/ER or call 817-685-

facilities.
Euless Citizen's Fire Academy
The Citizen Fire Academy is a program designed to
open the lines of communication between the Euless
Fire Department and the community. The Citizen Fire
Academy is dedicated to increase public awareness of
the operations of the Euless Fire Department and
creating a safer environment at home and the work
place. The class members will accomplish this
through demonstrations and participation. It is our
feeling that an informed citizen helps keep our
community safe.

The 25th National Night Out is now being hosted
during a cooler time of year. Please mark your
calendars for 6 - 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7.
National Night Out is an effort to discourage crime
and to get to know your neighbors. National Night
Out is designed to heighten crime and drug
prevention awareness, generate support and
participation in local anti-crime programs,
strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/
community partnerships, and to send a message to
criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are
fighting back.
Euless neighborhoods are encouraged to:
• Turn on your front porch light
• Block parties or cookouts
• Receive visits from Police and Fire personnel
• Hold parades
• Flashlight walks
• Contests
• Youth programs
NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and
enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit
and police/community partnerships in our fight for a
safer nation. Make a statement against crime in your
neighborhood! To participate in National Night Out,
or for more information, please contact the
Neighborhood Police Officers by calling (817) 685-
1563.
The Euless Police and Fire Departments will both
host Open Houses from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday,
October 4. The Police Open House will be held at
1102 W. Euless Blvd. and the Fire Open House will be
held at Fire Station #3, 202 S. Main St. Both events
will have activities for children, tours of the facilities
and members of the Citizen's Emergency Response
Team, Citizen's Fire Academy, Citizen's Police
Academy and Citizens on Patrol. In addition,
representatives from each department will be
available to answer questions and discuss their
important role in the community. These events are
free and everyone is invited!
The Euless Fire Department reminds you to
change the batteries in your smoke detectors,
carbon monoxide (CO) detectors and hazard
warning radios when you change your clocks
for Daylight Saving Time.
This simple step greatly increases a family's
chances of escaping safely in the event of a
house fire or a gas leak. A working smoke
detector doubles the chance of surviving a fire.
It's critical to test your smoke detectors
regularly and to replace the batteries in
battery-operated units at least once every six
months, as well as in battery-operated carbon
monoxide detectors. Safety experts also
recommend replacing any smoke detector that
is more than 10 years old. For more
information, call the Euless Fire Department
at 817-685-1600.
In March the Euless Fire Department
responded to a single family house fire in
Euless. Investigators determined that the
home did not have any working smoke
detectors, the first line of defense in a fire.
Euless Fire Crews will be canvasing the
surrounding neighborhoods to test smoke
detectors and provide installation of a detector
or batteries if needed. If you receive a knock at
the door from a Euless Firefighter, please let
them help. For more information, call the
Euless Fire Department at 817-685-1600.

How long have you lived in Euless? How much do
you know about the City you live in? Did you know
that the Fuller House was the first brick house in
Euless? Or that the McCormick Barn is made out of
lumber hauled by horse and buggy from Camp
Bowie in Fort Worth? Have you visited the circa
157 year old Himes Log House? The Log House was
found inside one of the homes located northeast of
Euless Junior High on Himes Street. These three
buildings were dismantled brick by brick, log by log
and lumber by lumber, moved and restored to their
original condition at beautiful Heritage Park at 203
Cullum Drive, east of Euless Main and Hwy 10.
Free tours are provided by the Historical
Preservation Committee every second Saturday of
the month between 1 - 5 p.m. Call 817-685-1649 or
email ofaiva-siale@ci.euless.tx.us for information
on tours, volunteer opportunities, donations, etc.
