r ' y ntit4e V welcome
Dear Citizens,
The long lazy days of summer have disappeared
into the sunset and the very busy days of fall are
upon us. The elections are over and the TV shows
have returned without political interruptions. We
now need to respect our new president and move
on to our community events.
We celebrate our new Insurance Services Office
upgrade for our Fire Department. This initiative
took some time and work to accomplish and we congratulate our
staff members who worked on this project. This will mean lower
home insurance rates for our citizens.
Along with the new ISO rating we welcome our new Fire Chief
Robert Isbell. Robert served as the Assistant Fire Chief during Chief
Koontz's tenure and is familiar to many of our citizens.
The Library renovations are complete with new carpeting, new
upholstered chairs and a wonderful new historical/genealogy room.
There are also additional study rooms and some large enough for
group studies. The conference room has been updated as well and
is used for library programs as well as city events.
The Texas Star Conference Centre is coming along. Renovations
will be completed by early 2009 and the entire Centre will be open
at that time. There will be a larger conference room, smaller
conference rooms, a larger kitchen and many other wonderful
amenities.
The City Council has approved the tax rate for the 2008-09 year
and it remains.47 cents per $100. This will allow staff to provide the
many activities at the recreation center and the library. We will
continue renovating city facilities and our infrastructure and will
follow the five-year plan that is updated each year. We are very
fortunate to be able to furnish the necessary services as well as the
extraordinary services.
The City Council has completed the appointments for the Boards
and Commission members. We thank all our citizens who have
served in the past and those who will serve this next year. We
appreciate the commitment of citizens who choose to serve.
There are several new businesses in our city and we urge you to
visit those businesses and shop in our city. The Shops at Vineyard
Village is filling up nicely and there are a couple of new restaurants
going in as well as a Sears Appliance store. Glade Parks across the
highway is completing its infrastructure and we will see new
buildings going up very soon.
The holidays are here and we wish you all a healthy, happy
season.

The "Spirit of Arbor Daze"
sculpture resides in the City
Hall Courtyard. This bronze
public art piece, dedicated
in 2000, has weathered
many storms and is a
continual reminder of the
importance of trees in our
community for their beauty
and majesty. It serves as a
reminder of the premise set
forth by the National Arbor
Day Foundation that, "Trees
wherever they are planted,
are a source of joy and
spiritual renewal."
Euless City Manager Gary McKamie announced in July that Robert
Isbell has accepted the position of Fire Chief for the City of Euless.
Isbell has served as Deputy Fire Chief of Euless for the past five
years.
Isbell has served as Fire Chief and
Battalion Commander in Southlake.
Prior to that he worked for the City of
Mansfield, where he began in 1985 as a
Firefighter/Paramedic and promoted
through the ranks to Training Captain.
"I've received valuable training
everywhere I've been from Mansfield to
Southlake to Euless, that has prepared
me for leading this first class
organization," said Isbell.
Isbell holds an Associate's Degree in Fire Protection Technology
from Tarrant County Junior College and a Bachelor's Degree in
Public Safety Administration from Grand Canyon University. Isbell
completed the Executive Fire Officer Program from the National
Fire Academy in Maryland and is currently completing a Master's
Degree in Executive Leadership also from Grand Canyon
University.
Isbell and his wife Laura have been married for 15 years. They have
three children: Sarah, Hannah and Emily.
After Feb. 17, 2009, most television stations will broadcast only a
digital signal, as required by the Digital Television Transportation
and Public Safety Act of 2005. You will not be affected by the
transition if you own a television with a digital tuner or subscribe to
cable or satellite. You can also choose to extend the life of your
analog set by purchasing a converter box. Retailers estimate selling
converter boxes for $50- $70. Every U.S. household may request up
to two free coupons -worth $40 each -good towards the purchase of
two certified TV converter boxes. For more information on how to
get your coupons, visit www.dtv2009.gov.
If you decide to buy a digital TV and no longer want your old analog
set, look for opportunities to recycle it. Recycling television sets
recovers valuable materials from the circuit boards, metal wiring,
leaded glass and plastics. Watch for information about the spring
household hazardous waste collection to recycle TVs. To find a local
recycling program, visit www.CLEANUP.org.

The City of Euless proudly announces that the Euless
Fire Department has been upgraded to a Class 1 Fire
Department by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). This
is the highest rating awarded by the ISO. With this
change in classification,
effective Jan. 1, 2009,
citizens and businesses in I.PWI, pl..
Euless will enjoy a reduction •El Pa F bE' Mess."`°°`ce

insurance policies renew.
Euless is the tenth city in
Texas to receive this rating.
City officials recognized the economic benefits of a lower
rating and began upgrading Euless' infrastructure.
Euless City Council along with retired City Manager Joe
Hennig and retired Fire Chief Lee Koontz worked to
meet the demands of rapid growth and made significant
improvements in our fire defenses. A new fire station was
built, fire apparatus was upgraded and additional staffing
was provided to ensure rapid response to local
emergencies. In addition, Euless Firefighters train
together frequently to remain skilled on the latest
techniques and technology in fire protection.
"This achievement is not only a testament to the hard
work and expertise of our Fire Department, but also the
many other supporting departments that helped us
achieve this ranking," said City Manager Gary McKamie.
"The City is committed to protecting our residents,
businesses and visitors and this recognition is one
further example of our focus on safety."
CrimeReports.com
The Euless Police Department is proud to offer a new
crime tracking software program for our citizens. Anyone
can now access the system at www.crimereports.com.
CrimeReports.com is a web site that provides tools to help
law enforcement agencies communicate directly with
members of the public using maps and automated alerts.
Type Euless in the search bar to access the crime data or
simply enter the address you wish to search. The system is
easy to use and operates using Google map technology.
Crime reports are automatically updated every 24 hours.

The Trinity River Authority will begin
installation of a 60 inch water line in the late fall
of 2008. The map above shows the general path
of this new five -mile water line that will serve
both Euless and Bedford residents. This
construction was bid in the fall and an
approximate nine months of construction will
follow. The city has begun notifying residents
that will be directly affected by this
construction. If you have any questions, please
contact Engineering at 817-685-1694.
Congratulations to the graduating classes of the
Citizens Fire Academy, the Citizens Police
Academy and Community Emergency Response
Team. For a complete list of graduates or for
more information about these programs, please

Renovations began at Texas Star Conference
Centre in February. The expansion on the south
side of the building is now complete, which
included the addition of conference rooms to
allow for capacity of 300 guests. Two break-
out/meeting rooms have been added, along with
a full-sized catering kitchen. Improved audio-
visual equipment will be installed throughout
the conference centre including mounted
projectors and drop down screens.
The Raven's Grille has now moved to the
southern end of the building into their new
large breakout room. The chef's have relocated
into the catering kitchen during the renovation
of the Grille. The current kitchen will be
increased to more than one and a half times its
current size and the current patio will be
enclosed with casing windows which will give
capability of opening the windows during nice
weather. Two new patio areas will be added to
the west side of the building. One will be for the
conference guests and one is for the Raven's
Grille outdoor dining. North side construction
should be completed around March 2009.
The changes are much anticipated by all who
use Texas Star and will allow us to continue to
provide great service in a quality facility to our
existing and new clients.

Why Plastic Caps Belong
in the Trash, Not the
Recycle Bin
Q: Earl - Everyone knows we
should recycle metal, glass,
and plastic cans and bottles, 4L
but what about all the lids, tops, and caps? I see
people recycling plastic bottles, for example,
with their caps on, but I've always been told to
throw them out. Is that wrong?
- Lidia in Euless
; A: Dear Lid
Many recycling programs throughout the U.S.
still do not accept plastic lids, tops and caps even
though they take the containers that accompany
them. Plastic lids are not typically made of the
same plastic as their containers and therefore
should not be mixed in with them.
Just about any plastic can be recycled, but when
two types are mixed, one contaminates the other,
reducing the value of the material or requiring
resources to separate them before processing.
Plastic caps and lids can also jam processing
equipment at recycling facilities, and the plastic
containers with tops still on them may not
compact properly during the recycling process.
They can present a safety risk for recycling
workers.

The holidays are a special time of year when families
come together to celebrate. Unfortunately, the
holidays are also the busiest time of year for
firefighters. With the introduction of cold weather
and increased use of candles and decorations,
residential fires typically peak in December and
January. Please follow some of these simple tips from
the Euless Fire Department to keep your family safe.
Candle Safety:
• Keep matches, lighters and lit candles out of reach
of children and pets.
• Burn candles away from windows, doors, drafts,
other heat sources and flammable materials.
• Don't place them on Christmas trees.
• Never allow a candle flame to touch any glass
surface.
• Don't burn candles more than four hours at a
time.
• Remove labels and tags from candles before
burning.
• Keep wicks trimmed to 1/ inch at all times.
• Extinguish candles by wetting the wick rather
than blowing out.
Christmas Tree Decorating:
• If you purchase an artificial tree, select one that is
listed as flame retardant.
• If you wish to purchase a live tree, choose one that
is not already loosing needles excessively. This
may indicate that it is already dried out.
• When you get your live tree home, cut one inch
off the base and stand the tree in a bucket of water
for twenty-four hours in the garage or other
unheated portion of your home. Cut off another
inch before placing the tree in a sturdy tree stand
that will hold one gallon of water.
• Keep your tree stand full of water so your tree will
remain fresh throughout the season.
Place your tree away from exits, heat discharge
vents and heat sources such as stoves, space
heaters and fireplaces. These dry out trees and are
potential sources of ignition.
Use lights listed by Underwriters Laboratories, and
do not string together more than the manufac-
turer recommends. NEVER USE CANDLES!
www.euless.org
• Turn off all electric decorations when you go to
bed or when leaving your home.
• Keep an eye on those small, inquisitive kids
when they are near the tree.
Turkey Frying:
• Turkey fryers should always be used outdoors on
a flat surface away from buildings and other
material that can burn.
• Never use turkey fryers on wooden decks or in
garages.
• Never leave the fryer unattended. Most units do
not have thermostat controls. If you don't watch
the fryer carefully, the oil will continue to heat
until it catches fire.
• Never let children or pets near the fryer when in
use. Even hours after use, the oil inside can
remain dangerously hot.
• Avoid oil spillover and do not overfill the fryer.
• Use well -insulated potholders or oven mitts
when touching pot or lid handles. If possible,
wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from oil
splatter.
• Oil and water don't mix so be sure the turkey is
completely thawed before cooking.
• Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby.
• Never use water to extinguish a grease fire.
Remember to use your best judgment when
attempting to fight a fire. If the fire is manageable,
use an all-purpose fire extinguisher. If the fire
increases, immediately call 9-1-1 for help. Follow
these tips for a safe and wonderful holiday season!
If you have any questions please call the Fire
Marshal's Office at 817-685-1600.
To protect your home from possible fire and
electrical damages, please remove your outdoor
Christmas lights, as soon as the Holidays are
over. This is required by the National Electrical
Code, Article 527, Section 527.3-B. If you have
questions, please contact Code Services at 817-
685-1625. Your assistance is greatly appreciated!
