HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-04 Euless Today1011 April Lri J FJ\ Dear Citizens, Volunteers are truly the heart- beat of our city. We recently recognized our volunteers and those who have given above and beyond with their time and talents. WE, THE COUNCIL AND STAFF, THANK YOU! We will not be hosting our Arbor Daze Festival this year because it coincides with the Easter celebration. We'll be back next year and counting on our volunteers. Our Community Powered Revitalization (CPR) has grown so that Hurst and Bed- ford have joined with Euless to make an even better difference in peoples' lives. Last fall we had over 1,200 volunteers support our program for two days. We have more houses than ever that need our help so come and join the volunteers and share your talents and enjoy meeting others as well. C EULESS Volunteers of the Year Named for 2010 Euless relies upon the hours our volunteers donate to make our special events great! We are fortunate to have volunteers who often work long hours without pay or recognition, simply for the benefit of Euless. In turn, the City celebrates the dedication and service of these outstanding people. Eric Bessemer was named Volunteer of the Year because of his dedication to the Fire and Police Departments. Prior to Bessemer's service, if a car required routine maintenance, officers would take the car for service during shifts and wait. Bessemer now transports the entire fleet of patrol cars to the service center and assists the Fire Department weekly by picking up back- boards from local hospitals. This allows our police officers and firefighters to respond to calls for service. Bessemer says, "It's my way of giving back." The Volunteer Business of the Year was presented to Lowe's for their efforts to help those less fortunate in Euless. Lowe's was a major sponsor of the Fall 2010 Community Powered Revitalization blitz. Due largely in part of 1 1 I the efforts of Thom Clark, the General Manager of the Euless Lowe's, CPR was the recipient of the Lowe's Hero's award. This designation provided nearly $12,000 of products from nine Tarrant County Lowe's stores, in addition to nearly fifty Lowe's employees from those stores who volunteered during the blitz. The Youth of the Year was given to Adil Kassam for his desire to help make Euless a better place. Adil volunteered for twenty-three special events from Dec. 2001 to Dec. 2010 for a total of 86.5 hours. Duties ranged from stuffing Easter eggs, manning carnival games and greeting troops. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Lou Baum. Baum is an active volunteer who has contributed his energy to many events and important issues. Euless recognized Baum as Volunteer of the Year in 1999 due in part to his initiation of a Community Policing program and his efforts in the Euless Citizen Police Academy Alumni (continued on page 3) Euless library Foundation Book Sale April 15-17 The book sale is just around the corner. HEB Transit provides work-related rides within Hurst, Euless and Bedford, to Workforce Solutions in North Richland Hills or to the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) train stations at Hurst/Bell and CentrePort/DFW Airport. This service provides rides to jobs and related services, such as childcare and training. The new hours are largely funded by a grant from Tarrant County for expanded transportation options in northeast Tarrant County. Commissioner Gary Fickes said, "Transportation is the primary barrier to those looking for work or looking for a way to get to work. It is crucial that we help meet the mobility needs of this region and expand public transportation options to make the connection between residents looking for work and businesses needing employees." In 2011, Easter will also fall on that same weekend. After much deliberation, the City of Euless decided to postpone our annual Arbor Day celebration until 2012. In our twenty-two year history of celebrating the importance of trees, this is the first time that the holiday has fallen on the same weekend that is traditionally slated for Arbor Daze. In an effort not to compete with other spring celebrations in the area, we decided not to move the event to another weekend in April. The award-winning Arbor Daze festival will return to its normally scheduled time on the last full weekend in April 2012, and we hope you'll be there to join us in our fun filled, family celebration! All three buildings at Historic Heritage Park, 203 Cullum Drive were relocated from their original locations. Give the year when each building was opened, dedicated and/or moved to Historic Heritage Park.
