HomeMy WebLinkAboutEuless Today 08/20111011 * August Dear Citizens, I hope you enjoy the information provided in this newsletter. You will see immed- 11 iately that this issue focuses on safety in Euless. From safer streets to training for our firefighters, to self-defense for our residents, we are alert. The Library has all sorts of great programs and projects. Especially the Purls of Wisdom. If you have extra K laying around the house, they can use it to make hats for all ages. This is the twelfth year that Texas Star Golf Course has hosted the Collegiate Players Tour. We are honored to have such great young players on our golf course. We always need help with this event. Please call if you would like to volunteer. Do enjoy your summer and keep safety foremost in your activities. Euless is a FABLILESS place to live and play. BIIOPUCANoF EULESS • Euless Creates Safer Streets for Pedestrians, Bicyclists and People with Disabilities Euless residents may have seen construction work on sidewalk ramps at street intersections recently. Since 1990, any new sidewalks installed in Euless have been built with ramps in order to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Euless currently has both sidewalk maintenance and street overlay programs. These programs were created to maintain our aging infrastructure. During major improvements on a street, such as a street overlay or sidewalk rehabilitation, ramps are either installed or reconstructed to F meet current ADA standards. Accessible sidewalks improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and enable people with disabilities to reach their destination in the community and to enjoy the benefits of city services, programs and activities. Euless firefighters, along with emergency responders from the Northeast Fire Department Association, participated in a Gas Well Training class created by Tarrant County College and Chesapeake Energy Corporation. The course highlighted common drill site risks, rescuing personnel if needed and mitigation of a situation if one should occur. The curriculum took place both in the classroom and on site. For local responders, this is a new field where training and communication are key. This training will become more important as drilling increases. especially for first responders, so they know what to expect when arriving on the scene. The focus is on safety. Euless Fire Chief Wes Rhodes said of the class, "Historically, emergencies at pad site locations have proven to be extremely rare. However, as first responders to an emergency, we want to ensure that Euless firefighters are prepared for a call of this nature." Adult ESL Class for Beginners English as a Second Language for Beginners is a free, twelve -week class for adult (18 and older) students who have never studied English or have very little knowledge of the language. Preemie caps are given every three months to the March of Dimes, and they are immediately distributed to needy babies in local hospitals in Tarrant County. Yarn for preemies must be extra soft, and made from either cotton or acrylic. Yarn is also used to make warm winter scarves for homeless children and adults being assisted at Union Gospel Mission in Downtown Fort Worth. This is a wonderful way to get rid of unused items and make a huge difference to others in your community. Donations can be dropped off at the Adult Reference desk. Thank you for your generous support!
