Dear Citizens,
Please read the
wonderful story
on page two
about our brand
new historical
museum. The
Euless Historical Commission is a
very active group of volunteers that
are dedicated to preserving and
promoting awareness of the
historical heritage of Euless.
This committee recently created a
stand-alone museum to honor the
history of Euless that opened last
September. It features priceless
artifacts from as far back as the
1880s. In addition to the main
hall, the museum features a
military room, a 1930s kitchen
and a 1940s school room. It even
has a replica of a wood porch
inside the museum that was hand
crafted by the members of the
committee in their spare time.
The museum is open on the
second Saturday of every month
from 1-5 p.m. and it is free to tour.
Please take the family for a visit
and see our historical heritage.
TOGETHER WE ARE BUILDING A
BETTER TOMORROW AND
REMEMBERING OUR PAST.

The Heritage Park Story
By Kathy A. Goolsby
Special Contributor
Five-year-old Kara Vaughan stands at
the well in Euless's Heritage Park as her great-
grandmother, Alice Vaughan, explains how
previous generations "fetched" water one
bucket at a time. As Ms. Vaughan
demonstrates opening the cover's lid,
dropping in a bucket and hauling it back up
hand -over -hand via a rope -and -pulley system,
Kara's eyes widen in amazement.
During a visit to Heritage Park, Alice Vaughan of
Euless tells her great-granddaughter, Kara Vaughan,
how early Euless residents fetched water from wells.
"Wow," she said as they walk away,
now we have sinks to get our water."
She and her twin sister, Kahlan, visited
the park in early June. Ms. Vaughan, who
home -schools her great-granddaughters, saw
Heritage Park as a chance to bring history
lessons to life.
"I have great respect for the past and I
just wanted them to see how people used to
do things," she said.
Heritage Park provides those lessons
with a variety of restored buildings, including
an 1850s log cabin, a barn built shortly after
World War I, a heritage museum, and even a
replica outhouse. The impetus for the park
began in the mid-1990s when word came that
Euless's first brick house was to be
demolished.
An old spinning wheel stands in front of cotton plants
in the 1850s log cabin at Heritage Park.
Residents rallied to save Homer and Edith
Taylor Fuller's 1932 home that was built at a time
when wooden farmhouses were the norm. The one
and a half story home was moved to the park and
restored to its original condition. Much of the
furnishings also are original, having been donated
by the Fuller family.
The Fuller House opened as a museum in
1998, but provided more than a glimpse into Euless's
past, said Mayor Mary Lib Saleh. It inspired the
creation of the park dedicated to the city's rich
history as more people came forward with
donations.
"The accumulation was overwhelming
because everyone wanted to donate something,"
Mayor Saleh said. "It really was a community effort."
Those donations included the log cabin that,
for more than 100 years, was protected by a house
built around it. After Andrew Jackson Himes bought
the cabin and surrounding land in 1888, he added
rooms to accommodate his growing family. A log
cabin restoration expert supervised the cabin's move
to Heritage Park and its restoration, and more
donations filled the home with tools, furniture and
other items authentic to its beginnings.
The nearby barn was created after World War I
and the dismantling of Army barracks at Camp
Bowie west of Fort Worth. The lumber was offered to
anyone willing to haul it away, and Walter Lee
McCormick used a wagon and mule team to carry off
enough planks to build his barn.
A butter churn, scrubbing board and oil lamp are among
the items displayed in the 1850s log cabin at Heritage
Park.
Also in Heritage Park is a recreation
center that, by 1995, was used only for
occasional meetings by local groups. As more
donations came in, members of the newly
formed Euless Historical Preservation
Committee asked to store the items at the
recreation center.
Eventually, an idea blossomed to turn the
center into a museum using the donations to
reflect local lifestyles, primarily during the
1930s. A Depression -era kitchen, back porch and
other rooms line the center's perimeter, all built
by committee members. One end of the former
gymnasium features wooden church pews and a
stained-glass window from the city's first Baptist
and Methodist churches. The office of Euless's
first police chief, W.M. "Blackie" Sustaire, is
recreated alongside an area dedicated to the
city's fire department.
There is a music room and a wall
dedicated to a nearby historic bridge. A shelf of
local family histories offers research materials for
local historians, and glass cases feature some of
the more delicate and unusual items.
"Maybe you didn't live it, but you can
come through here and learn how your parents
and grandparents lived," said Don Martin, one
of the park's volunteer docents.
The docents are members of the

Historical Preservation Committee and are there
to answer questions or give tours. Visitors also
are welcome to explore the various buildings on
their own.
Heritage Park provides more than just a
glimpse of how the people of Euless once lived,
Mayor Saleh said, but also is a reflection of
today's residents.
"The main purpose is to keep the heritage
of Euless alive," she said, "And it's thanks to the
citizens of Euless who have graciously donated
historical items that we are able to keep that
history alive."
