HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-04 Euless Today1014 * April Dear Citizens, Do read about our wonderful volun- teers and those special ones that received the Volun- teer of the Year awards for their service to FabEuless! We have many volunteers that share their time and talents for Euless projects and even have fun participating. We will have the Municipal Elections in May. This year we have four vacant seats up for election. Do get to know your candidates and then vote early at the city library. Remember the annual Trash Off on April 5. Lets keep our city clean. Then bring your "crud" on April 12 and clean your garage. There are so many events in April, especially our traditional Arbor Daze celebration. We have had many changes through the years but the one constant is the dedication to growing trees in Euless. According to the National Arbor Day Foundation "Trees wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal." We couldn't agree more. Please join us at Arbor Daze for food, fun, free trees and educational exhibits. Together we continue to Build a Better Tomorrow for our Citizens. Pugu w Of EUL°ESS Volunteers of the Year Named for 2013 We're going to let you in on the secret of our great events. Shhhh. Don't tell anyone. It's our volunteers! Euless volunteers are the cream of the crop. They consistently give their time and energy to make our community FabEuless. In turn, the City of Euless honors volunteers each year to celebrate the dedication and service of these outstanding people. Volunteer of the Year — Barbara Collier (pictured in center) In 2012, the Euless Historic Preservation Museum Committee was named Volunteer of the Year for their work in creating a museum to honor the history of Euless. Our 2013 Volunteer of the Year was a big part of that effort. Barbara Collier is the current Vice Chair of the committee and has been invaluable to the group by setting up the accounts, listing and categorizing all gifts and inventorying items. She is interested in all things historical and has a passion for genealogy research. The museum opened in September and features priceless artifacts from as far back as the 1880s. What they have done, and continue to do, will touch lives in this community for generations. (continued on next page) Euless Today is published by the City of Euless. 201 N. They recently jumped into the family of volunteers with both feet. They frequently host fundraisers for the 2009 Youth Volunteer of the Year Trinity High School GAP Club, the Euless Police and Fire Alumni Associations and also rewarded all of our volunteers at the annual Volunteer Ice Cream Fellowship with delicious custard. They can frequently be spotted at the Texas Junior Angler's, Halloween Trunk or Treat and Heritage Park Christmas. They always present a very positive attitude and are genuinely glad to have a business in Euless. It didn't take long to see that they would be a great part of our city events. Volunteer Youth of the Year — Upashana Adikaree Upashana Adikaree received the Volunteer Youth of the Year award for her dedication to the Euless Public Library. Upashana began volunteering with the Library's youth department in the summer of 2013. Between the summer reading club signup, craft setup, and special event assistance, she stayed very busy all summer long. This fall, she has been volunteering with our Homework Help program and has helped several students with math, spelling and reading. The students, and their parents, have truly appreciated her assistance. Lifetime Achievement Award — Barney Snitz The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to a person or persons in Euless that have given of their time and efforts to the City of Euless throughout their life. This year, the Lifetime Achievement Award has been presented to Barney Snitz. Barney has been involved in the Euless community for years and received the Volunteer of the Year award in 2007. He always has a smile on his face and maybe a trinket or two in his pocket to make children smile. He is retired, but has made volunteering nearly a full-time job. One nominator stated, "Barney is so deeply ingrained into so many activities for the city, it almost seems strange if he is not there." He sits on the Library Board, the Euless Library Foundation and is a member of the Citizens Police and Fire Academy Alumni Associations. He is a member of the Euless Police Department Training Advisory Board, the Child Abduction Response Team, Euless Fire Department Rehab Unit and previously served on the Citizen's Corps Council and the Crime Control and Prevention Board. He is a graduate of the Community Emergency Response Team and has been a DFW Airport Ambassador for more than ten years. We thank him for his continued dedication, enthusiasm and humility. Our congratulations go out to all of this year's winners. The dedication of a volunteer's time and energy cannot be compared and we appreciate their love and admiration for Euless. Thank you for the time and energy that you spend to help make Euless great! Arbor Daze 2014 April 26 (9 a. m. - 8 p. m.), April 27 (2 - 6 p. m.) Euless City Hall Complex, 201 N.
