Euless Today 08/2013
1013 . August Dear Citizens, The Greater Fort Worth Builders Association has pre- sented Euless with the Community Spotlight Award for our partnership with the CPR Program. This award recognizes a community that has created winning solutions to local challenges. Congrat-ulations to all of the Volunteers that helped us receive this award. You deserve all of the credit! We have another "new" member on the Euless team. Sherry Knight is our new Library Administrator. Sherry has been around many years and knows the Library inside and out. She will be a great addition to that wonderful facility. Please help prevent the source of mosquitos in your yard and avoid possible infection of West Nile virus. Survey your yards for standing water and dump it out. Mosquitos breed in even the smallest amount of water. This includes the base of potted plants, bird baths and pet water dishes. Meanwhile, do enjoy all our great facilities such the library, parks, recreation and the water park. Together We Are Building a Better Tomorrow for our City. 74P("v INEOFFICIAL T H E C I T Y O F PUmuGlnoNoF EUL°ESS Tarrant Regional Water District: Stage 1 Water Restrictions Due to persistent drought conditions and in spite of recent precipitation, water reservoir capacity has been reduced to 75%. In coherence of the Drought Contingency Plan, the Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) has implemented Stage 1 water restrictions. The goal of these restrictions is to reduce outdoor watering, which can account for 50% of residential water used during the summer months. Watering by hand, soaker hoses and drip irrigation is allowed at any time on any day of the week. day restriction, which prohibits watering between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., will continue to remain in effect. Take Control and Stop West Nile Virus Dump Standing Water I Wear Repellent I Dress for Dusk and Dawn Experts believe West Nile Virus is the seasonal epidemic of the summer months, just like influenza is to winter. West Nile can be transmitted year-round whenever mosquitoes are biting, which is why it is best to protect yourself all year. Everyone is at risk of being affected by West Nile virus. There is no vaccine. Mosquitoes must have standing water in which to begin their life cycle. Almost any container or area of standing water presents a potential "mosquito nursery" in which eggs can be laid. The easiest way to eliminate mosquitoes is to remove any standing water from your yard and community. It's as simple as that! Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flowerpots, buckets and other things that hold water. Change the water in pet dishes, and replace the water in birdbaths weekly. Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their sides when they aren't being used. Take responsibility for your health. Check out West Nile virus information at www.tarrantcounty.com for prevention tips and facts about West Nile virus. Mosquito Spraying The City of Euless provides periodic spraying and mosquito monitoring with mosquito surveillance ti traps. The spraying is actually a periodic puff of mist containing mosquito adulticide. The mist is hardly visible to the naked eye and has no detectable odor. Spraying will be performed in the late evening while most of the residents are indoors. The City of Euless proactively tries to reduce the number of mosquitos by placing larvacide pellets along with gambusia minnows in ponds, creeks, lakes, and drainage easements. Gambusia fish are tough fish that help fight mosquito infestation due to their ability to consume over 100 mosquito larvae a day, tolerate hot weather, still water, and even common pollutants. Mosquito spraying and larvicide pellets will not eliminate mosquitoes completely. We ask that residents help us take action against mosquito infestation. The most effective way to reduce mosquitoes in your neighborhood is to remove their breeding source — standing water. Thousands of mosquitoes can hatch from a puddle of water that is stagnant for at least four days. If you have any questions or concerns regarding West Nile virus, please call Public Works, at 817-685-1580. Citizen's Fire Academy Class takes place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays beginning August 8 The Citizen Fire Academy is a class dedicated to increase public awareness of the operations of the Euless Fire Department and creating a safer environment at home and the work place. The class members will accomplish this through demonstrations and participation. We believe that an informed citizen helps keep our community safe.
