It's the worst tornado outbreak in the Metroplex since the Fort Worth tornado of March 2000. The tornadoes began forming south of Fort Worth around 1 p.m. and moved steadily northeast at about 35mph. Radar images indicated a classic "hook" echo on several of these Supercell thunderstorms over both Dallas and Tarrant County between 1 and 3 p.m. The Tarrant County tornado tracked from extreme southern Fort Worth around Everman northeastward to Kennedale, Arlington and Euless. Huge hail to baseball size was reported in Euless. Hundreds of buildings along this tornado's path suffered effects ranging from minor damage to complete destruction. The first Dallas County tornado formed near Lancaster where it damaged some 300 homes at about the same time as the Everman tornado. It then tracked east of downtown Dallas and passed right over the Mesquite rodeo arena before weakening and moving further northward toward Garland. Forney, in northwestern Kaufman County had over 70 homes sustaining damage and about two dozen of these "severely" damaged. Tornadoes were also reported in Hunt and Delta Counties further east. The Tarrant County storm passed directly over DFW airport where 110 aircraft suffered varying degrees of hail damage according to the DFW airport spokesman David Magana as quoted by WFAA-TV. The airplane losses alone could run to the tens of millions; it's too early to say until they are all inspected. All told, at least half a dozen tornadoes touched down in north Texas on April 3, 2012. Damage from the tornadoes is extensive, and the devastation is consistent with winds of at least 120mph. The tornadoes will be rated at least EF2 if not EF3 based on the damage video seen on local and national broadcasts the evening of the storms. EF2 tornadoes have winds of 11 to 135 mph while the EF3 classification is given to tornadoes in the 136 to 165 mph wind range. Most permanent structures will lose their roofs in an EF2 while entire buildings are severely damaged or destroyed in an EF3. Both damage types were seen in the DFW tornadoes of April 3. There have been recent outbreaks with more tornadoes across north Texas, but this event is likely to produce the greatest dollar amount of damage in the Metroplex since the large Fort Worth tornado of March 2000. Human casualties stand at 12 injuries, some severe. There have been no deaths reported. Damage will likely be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The Red Cross is reporting 650 homes were damaged across the Dallas- Fort Worth area with hundreds of business and industrial buildings also damaged or destroyed. These figures will likely change as damages assessments continue Wednesday. The National Weather Service will conduct damage surveys on April 4 and the results will be posted in this column as they become available. "TRA's request is related solely to the quantity of water available to the cities' storage tanks," according to a news release. The authority expects that power will be restored within a few hours. I DATE OF ARTICLE NEWSPAPER FWST Euless to consider building water park and indoor pool Posted Monday,Apr.09,2012 BY TERRY EVANS tevans@star-teleg ram.corn EULESS—An indoor pool and outdoor water park could come to town soon. The City Council is scheduled to vote tonight on whether to authorize City Manager Gary McKamie to find a company to design and build the facilities at the Euless Family Life Center, spokeswoman Betsy Deck said. If the project is approved,Euless could soon join several Northeast Tarrant County neighbors that have built aquatic centers, from elaborate indoor water parks like the one opening Saturday in North Richland Hills to simple outdoor splash pads like the one being built in Haltom City's newest park. McKamie and Parks Director Ray McDonald toured area aquatic centers looking for features to present to the council,Deck said. The idea is to put an indoor pool at the 300 W.Midway Drive facility that will"accommodate senior therapeutic needs and give our citizens a pool they can use year-round,"McDonald said. He hopes to start work this year on the 1-to 1.5-acre complex and finish it sometime in 2013. The indoor pool may feature garage-type doors that can be raised partway for an open-air effect that reduces the chlorine smell typical of indoor pools, Deck said. In addition to the indoor pool, McDonald said, the complex would include outdoor lap pools and"some type of current channel and the typical outdoor aquatic facility with interactive play features, maybe a lazy river component, splash areas for smaller kids and a zero-depth- entry pool." According to tonight's agenda, the 2012 budget provides funding for the design. The cost has not been determined. The council meets at 7 p.m. in City Hall,201 N.Ector Drive. Terry Evans,817-390-7620
