Euless calling all volunteers to help with hometown food bank
Generous folks from Euless Parks and Community Services are organizing volunteers
to assist 6 Stones with its food bank.
The department’s employees and volunteers “are thrilled and honored to give back to
our community by volunteering at the 6 Stones Missions Network,” said Jerry Poteet,
special events and volunteer coordinator. “We trust that our volunteers’ efforts will go a
long way to help those in need here in Euless and the H-E-B area.”
The agency’s New Hope Center serves about 300 people a week meeting emergency
needs for food, clothing and other resources.
Suzanne Hendrickson, Euless recreation manager, said the hometown food bank
project is an annual event, usually during spring break. “It’s a way to teach the
importance of community service. In fact, kids from our own Spring Break Camp will be
participating in the event.”
To sign up, contact Poteet at 817-685-1449 or jpoteet@eulesstx.gov. Learn more about
the center at www.6stones.org/newhope, or contact Cody Bettis cbettis@6stones.org.

Construction Director of Habitat for Humanity, Christine Panagopoulos, right, explains the layout to homeowner Mary
Myers as employees of XTO Energy assemble her new home in Sundance Square.Ron T. Ennis Star-Telegram
If you hear hammering in downtown Fort Worth on Tuesday you do not need to
check your hearing. A home is currently being built in the middle of Sundance
Square.
Trinity Habitat for Humanity and XTO Energy have teamed up to build this new
home for Mary Myers and her four granddaughters.
"I couldn't believe it," said Myers. "I sat there after I got off the phone with the
lady who called me, and I just sat there, so I couldn't believe it. The girls got
home from school and I told them. I still couldn’t believe it."
The home being built will not stay in Sundance Square. When it is partially
complete it will be moved to its permanent position on Greenlee Avenue in Fort
Worth.
"We will have the walls up, and you will be able to see the layout of the house,"
said Trinity Habitat for Humanity spokesperson Lauren Harris.
The home will have three bedrooms.
They have been building homes in the middle of downtown Fort Worth since
2009.
"It's a good opportunity for people in the community to see what a Habitat for
Humanity house looks like and get some information about what we do," said
Trinity Habitat for Humanity spokesperson Lauren Harris.
Myers says it means a lot to have a home of her own.

Spring Break volunteers help out
food bank in Bedford
BY ELIZABETH CAMPBELL

Center in Bedford."
BEDFORD
Sherri Woods was searching online for spring break activities for her two daughters when she
found a notice asking for volunteers to help out at the New Hope Center, a food bank serving
Northeast Tarrant County.
“I thought, ‘Yes, this is something we can do as a family on spring break,’” Woods said.
So they spent Monday among the 70 volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and did everything
from sorting food and clothing to scrubbing floors at the New Hope Center, which is part of the
6Stones nonprofit organization. The New Hope Center provides emergency assistance to the
needy, primarily those who live in Hurst, Euless and Bedford.
Woods, who teaches language arts at Stonegate Christian Academy in Irving, said she was glad
to find a meaningful activity for her family.
Joe Ader, director of compassion ministries for 6Stones, told the volunteers that last year,
13,721 people came to the New Hope Center for assistance and that 13,000 students in the
Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district are on free and reduced-price lunches. About 300 people
get assistance from the agency each week, according to its website.
The volunteers divided into groups and tackled projects in the large warehouse.
Bonnie Emerick and Lauren Sullivan, seniors at Trinity High School, took a break from
scrubbing down a refrigerator to talk about their volunteer project.
“6Stones provides opportunities for us to give back collaboratively which makes more of an
impact,” Sullivan said.
Euless volunter coordinator Jerry Poteet said he wasn’t surprised by the large number of people
who came to help.
“It’s a joy,” Poteet said. “We always tell people to sign up in advance because slots fill up
quickly.”
