Bisnow got a sneak preview yesterday from Dave & Buster's president and CO O Dolf Berle and the new location's GM , Jeff Cleary . Jeff tells us the Euless e ntertainment center is a new layout for the chain with a square floor plate instead of rectangular, as well as a larger space for the winner's circle (wh ere you c laim your swag from tickets earned playing games.) The San Antonio site should open late this fall , but no date was released for the other two sites. But one man is making sure folks can sti ll get h ome. This is the first tim e the new high -tech road treatment, meant to prese rv e existing asphalt and extend pavement life , has been app li ed to a Texas road. While it will seal the street for years , homeowners can't drive on it for an en tire day . If you live on, hike, haul or deliver to homes on dozens of streets in Euless you might find yourself looking for some low -tech ways to save s a few steps. That 's where Loren Johnson comes in. The Citizens on Patrol volunteer's job is to get people from where they parked their cars ..:;' to their homes in his c ity-supplied go lf cart. "There was this one couple, they been camping overnight and th ey came home and had all their camping gear," he recalled. "Luckily it was just a couple houses up .". Johnson helped out some carpenters working on a house . They had trouble with the street improv em e nts since they got here . "I shuttled them all . In fact, the van ~' got here this morning, before the street was blocked off. They drove in then at lun chtime they cou ldn 't get out . But they got permission to let them out and now the van is parked at the end of the street." But in the storm 's wake, as Ray McDonald , director of the city 's parks and community services , waded through ankle-deep puddles among the tents on the municipal lawn , he realized the sod would remain waterlogged overnight. Soon after hearing this , City Manager Loretta Getchell decided to cancel the Saturday schedule , too. The silver that lined the clouds is that Euless won 't take anywhere near the economic hit it suffered in 2004 , when a two-day rainout cost the city about $250,000. The festival was much grander back then . Arbor Daze lost half a day to weather in 2005. City leaders canceled the 2006 festival. A scaled-down Arbor Daze was introduced in 2007. The budget set for Arbor Daze 2015 was $65 ,000 , Deck said . "We won 't spend all of it ," Deck said. "It will depend on how many service providers don 't charge or reduce the contract amount." McDonald said the carnival provider, for instance, agreed to roll over the fee to next year 's festival. "Others are negotiating how much , if any, can be rolled into later events that we do throughout the year," McDonald said. "The contract says 'rain or shine .' We haven't had a chance to talk to al l of them." Refunding fees to vendors will cost about $10 ,000 , McDonald said. "About $8,000 in booth rentals were for businesses and arts and crafts ," McDonald said . "Concessionaires are probably another two grand ." The heaviest hit , McDonald said , was lost opportunity . "I was looking forward to seeing the citizens of Euless ," he said. "That 's the best part of Arbor Daze , seeing your friends and neighbors . I'm very di sappointed that we didn 't get to share that time." Ofa Faiva-Siale, the city 's project and events coordinator and a leader in the local Tongan community , shared McDonald's disappointment. This was to be the second -and grander -year for a Tongan culture tent. "We never even got as far as putting stuff in the tent," Faiva-Siale said. "It 's disappointing, but what do you do other than roll with the punches? We're thankful for the opportunity to share and look forward to doing it next year." The city also had something to share last weekend , and McDonald said it still intends to give away about 3 ,500 red oak saplings . That is scheduled for Saturday . Recently, the two cities agreed on uniform zoning for the 37.1-acre Glade Parks South that includes regulations for parking, landscaping and building setbacks . W._._'S...-..T "This is a win-win situation for both cities, said Bill Syblon, Bedford's director of development. Glade Parks South, owned by Tonti Properties, is a separate development from the nearby Glade Parks, which is bustling with single-family homes, urban lofts and stores such as Belk, which will begin construction this summer, and Dave & Buster's, which is scheduled to open in early May. Glade Parks South is on the north side of Cheek-Sparger Road, south of Bear Creek, between Heritage Road to the west and Rio Grande Boulevard to the east. Most of the land for Glade Parks South is in Euless, which will include the luxury lofts, shopping and restaurants. Six acres are in Bedford, where big-box retailers such as a grocery store or The Home Depot can locate, and land will also be set aside for parks and wetlands. Mike Collins, director of planning and economic development for Euless, said there are no announcements yet on the stores and restaurants that would locate in Glade Parks South. The urban lofts will be in a four-story building surrounded by "structured parking" on three sides and are designed for upscale professionals. Stickland responds to claims he broke rules Morgan Smith, The Texas T r ibune Responding to claims that he improperly registered witnesses at a committee hearing, state Rep . Jonathan Stickland released a statement Monday standing by his actions. During a Thursday night hearing of the House Transportation Committee , Stickland , R-Bedford , and state Rep . Joe Pickett , D-EI Paso , the committee's chairman , got into an argument as Stickland presented House Bill 142 , which would ban red light cameras. Pickett ordered Stickland to leave the hearing and accused Stickland of listing witnesses who were not in Austin as supporters of his legislation . "Unfortunately, when I went to lay out my bill , I was prevented from doing so in a very deliberate and dramatic way," Stickland said in Monday's statement. "It was what I can only characterize as an ambush by a political opponent. " Stickland said that his attorneys had reviewed applicable laws , rules and legislative manuals and "have been unable to locate anything that commands that a person must be present in the Capitol to register their support or opposition to a bill." On Thursday , before the Transportation Committee hearing, the two lawmakers had a testy exchange on the House floor when Stickland used a procedural tactic to delay a separate bill from Pickett. In his statement, Stickland implied that his earlier action had motivated Pickett to attack his bill in the hearing . "Tensions run high at this point of the session , and I am not surprised that Mr. Pickett would be upset with me for knocking his bill off of the local and consent calendar," he said . "However, there is no reason that he could not have discussed his concerns with me in advance of the hearing." Referencing the prosecution of elected officials like Gov. Rick Perry and former U.S. Rep . Tom Delay, Stickland said attempts to criminalize political differences were an "unfortunate trend in this nation and in this state ." "I will not tolerate the use of the c rim inal justice system or the civil courts as a means of suppressing the speech of those who the powerful may disagree with or don 't like. I will not tolerate it, and I hope you in the public and my colleagues in the legislature w ill stand with me ," he said. State Rep . John Kuempel , R-Seguin , the chairman of the House Committee on General Investigating and Ethics, said Friday he plans to investigate allegations that witnesses were signed up improperly to speak at the transportation comm ittee meeting . He said the investigation wou ld not target a specific member or bill. T Two years ago , he learned about HEB Transit from the Texas Workforce Commission . He now uses the service to get to his job at the Tuesday Morning store on Harwood Road in Bedford. As he stepped on board the van outside his apartment, Quetant said he was grateful for the service . "I had no way of getting to and from work ," he said . "It helps me tremendously . There wasn 't another option ." HEB Transit , operated by Catholic Charities Fort Worth , along with the cities of Hurst, Euless and Bedford and other faith-based organizations , provides rides to people who meet income guidelines and either can 't drive or are in the process of buying a car. Courtney Cartwright, transportation services manager for Catholic Charities said HEB Transit takes people to their jobs in Hurst, Euless and Bedford or to the CentrePort/DFW Airport and Hurst-Bell stations for the Trinity Railway Express so that they can get to jobs at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport , Dallas Love Field , Dallas or Fort Worth. "HEB Transit is a transition service ," Cartwright said . "We truly try to get people set up to enhance their lives." The service was funded in part by a federal startup grant that expired last year . The idea is for the federal money to last until the service has sufficient funding from other sources. Catholic Charities , 6 Stones , Mission Central and the three cities kicked in the necessary funding , and the service is flourishing. HEB Transit uses vans equipped for wheelchairs, small buses and even sedans to pick up its clients . Last year the service provided 1,400 trips to 90 riders , who must pay a $2 cash fare each way . Elizabeth Hillard , 26, of Euless uses the service to travel to the CentrePort/DFW Airport Station , where she catches the Trinity Railway Express to Dallas and then takes a DART train to her job at the Dunkin ' Donuts at Love Field. Hillard , who no longer has a car , said that it takes her about an hour to get to work each day but that without HEB Transit, she wouldn 't be able to get there at all. "It would be nice for this area to have public transit. That is why this HEB Transit service is so , so helpful," she said . Mary Cole , who also lives in Euless , uses the service to get to her job at the Wal-Mart in Bedford where she works in the apparel and shoe departments . In Hurst, longtime Councilman Henry Wilson , who has served for 30 years, kept his Place 6 seat by defeating Joel Downs 59 .7 percent to 40 .3 percent . In Euless, Harry Zimmer defeated George Moore in Place 5 w ith 86.9 percent to Moore's 13 .1 percent, and Perry Bynum beat Tim St. Clair in Place 6 with 83 percent of the vote to St. Clair's 17 percent. In the Place 7 Hurst-Euless -Bedford school board race , Fred Campos trounced Gary Jones 61 .6 percent to 38 .4 percent. In Hurst , Wilson said he believes voters feel that the city is well run and are satisfied with the council. "I really want to be the councilman who is there when we cut the ribbon ," adding that it took 10 years to persuade developers to bring a new grocery store to south Hurst . In the HEB school board race , Campos, who will serve his first four-year term , said that after he was defeated in 2013, he vowed to do his homework by attending school board meetings and a leadership academy that gives community members a chance to see what it is like to serve on the school board . "I think that during the past two years , more people came to know who Fred Campos was ," he said Sunday . "I got to know the players involved , and I had more experience for the job ." A new mixed-use project in the mid-cities area will be anchored by a Belk department store. Belk said Monday it will build a 95,000 square-foot store in the Glade Parks development under construction in Euless off State Highway 121 near Glade and Cheek-Sparger roads. Construction will start on the $10.8 million store in July and the opening will be in March 2016. Belk said the new Euless store will be similar to the company's North Fort Worth location at Alliance Town Center. The 194-acre Glade Parks development will also have a Super Target and Walmart Supercenter. Parts of the project will open this summer.
