HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-05-09 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes May 9, 2016 CALL TO ORDER Vice-Chair, Mavy Wright, called the meeting to order at 10:01 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall at 201 N. Ector Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Gary Barnhill, Doris Brown, Michelle Burger, Bill Byers, Joe Cannon, Weldon Cannon, Iris Elliott, Leon Hogg, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, Veva Lou and David Massey, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Andy Weinzapfel, Mavy Wright and Linda Pool. VISITORS PRESENT Patty Benoit STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Leon Hogg made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Don Martin seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $11,647.74. There were expenditures of $50 and a deposit of $27, leaving a current balance of $11 ,624.74. GUEST SPEAKER Andy Weinzapfel gave a presentation about the Historic Tree program. He's working with David Allen, City of Euless GIS Manager, on mapping the various historic tree locations. He indicated that the City's Parks and Community Services Department is very interested in helping with the program. Andy Weinzapfel gave a presentation about the Historic Tree Program at Arbor Daze. He was disappointed with the turn out. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports / Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. A list was passed around for volunteers to serve as docents on May 14, 2016 and June 11 , 2016. 2. Acquisitions—Bill Byers reported on the acquisition of newspaper articles from 1953, 1954 for the files. Joe Cannon brought the articles. HPC MTG 061316 Page 1 3. Library Display—Marilyn Long reported that the subcommittee was able to work on the display at Mary Lib Saleh Library. Labels were given to staff to do for the items. 4. Website \ Facebook—No Report 5. Heritage Park—Gary Parker indicated that the base for the Black Smith Shop is still standing. 6. Local Historical Marker—No Report 7. Publicity—No Report 8. Plaque—A donation from the Committee will be given to the Citizens Fire Academy in memorial of Leah Bennett. Faye Stinneford will notify the family of the donation. 9. Display Signs—No Report 10.Oral History \ Photography—No Report 11.Historical Album Project—Marilyn Long will include recent newspaper articles about the shooting of Officer David Hoffer in the historical albums. 12.Photo Album Project—No Report 13.Artifact Recovery—No Report 14.Texas State Historical Marker Application— Andy Weinzapfel reported that the Sikh elders were unable to come up with the money to pay for the "Early Education" Texas State Historical Marker that was approved for the site. Patty Benoit noted that a smaller, less expensive marker could be acquired for the site. The Tarrant County Historical Commission has encouraged us to reapply in the fall. This item will be tabled for now until more discussion with the church can be had. 15.Historic Tree Program—Weldon Cannon discussed the following: a. Asked if there might be a place in the Historic Tree program for shrubs, bushes, plants and other smaller trees. Mr. Cannon has many bushes and shrubs from his grandfather's nursery business that he transplanted to his property in Temple, Texas. b. Indicated that a Cypress Tree currently grows on the north side of Hollywood Boulevard in the backyard of one of the houses there. The tree has been there since circa 1900's. He would love to acquire a clipping of the tree. c. It was noted that the City also has a Historic Tree Grove at the Preserve at McCormick Park. HPC MTG 061316 Page 2 d. Hopes the City would be willing to help propagate and transplant some of his samplings. COMMITTEE / OTHER REPORTS 1. Helen Voss, Faye Stinneford, Barbara Collier and Robert Nail were unable to attend today's meeting. 2. Members were happy to hear that Council Members Tim Stinneford and Eddie Price were re-elected to City Council. 3. Various members discussed whether anyone had heard from Bill Golden and how he was doing health wise. Don Martin and Mr. Golden recently emailed. 4. Norma and O.D. Lively attended Andy Weinzapfel's presentation at Arbor Daze. Mrs. Lively noted that Mr. Weinzapfel did a great job. 5. Weldon Cannon completed an interview he did with Linda Pool's maternal grandfather many years ago. He gave copies of the interview to Mrs. Pool and her father, Robert Nail, to proof. If they approve the interview, Mr. Cannon would like to include the interview in the Museum's files. 6. Leon Hogg regretted that he had to miss Arbor Daze this year. He reminisced about how the idea for Arbor Daze was first conceived in his living room in a meeting between himself, his wife Jan, and Rick Herold. This was the first time Mr. Hogg missed the event since its inception 28 years ago. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff was happy with the Arbor Daze event. There were positive feedback regarding the location and the length of the event. Owners of the concession stands were also happy with the event. 2. Currently preparing for summer. Two new employees have been hired to work with Summer Camp and oversee Aquatics. 3. A leaner board with the Museum open house days/hours has been made and staff will move the leaner board around the City for open house weekend. ADJOURNMENT David Massey made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Andy Weinzapfel seconded the motion. Motion approved.
