HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-05-02 Regular Meeting Parks and Leisure Services Board May 2, 2016 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Leisure Services Board was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 2, 2016 in the Council Chambers of the Euless City Hall building by Chairman Randy Jones. Other Board Members present: John Raab, Tiffany Smith, Steve Doty, Roger Sickler, Jason Reyes, Salman Bhojani, and Mohib Nawab. Members absent: none. Staff members present: Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Parks Manager Terry Boaz, Senior Center Supervisor Diane Egger, Senior Center Coordinator Renee Frizzell and Administrative Secretary Jordan Peterson. Visitors present: Loretta Doty and Susan Marvel INVOCATION Roger Sickler gave the invocation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairman Jones asked if there were any additions or corrections to the minutes from the April 4, 2016 regular meeting. Mr. Sickler made the motion to approve the minutes as presented and was seconded by Mr. Reyes. The vote was unanimous. I. Board Member Reports a. Jason Reyes— Kiddie Carr Park &J.A. Carr Park: No items to report. b. Salman Bhojani— Heritage & S. Euless Park: Sand piles in parking lots. c. Tiffany Smith — Midway Park & Blessing Branch: No items to report. d. Roger Sickler— Bob Eden &Trailwood Park: No items to report. e. John Raab- Preserve & McCormick: No items to report. f. Chairman Jones—Parks at Texas Star: No items to report. g. Mohib Nawab—Villages of Bear Creek & Reflection: No items to report. h. Steve Doty—West Park & Wilshire: No items to report. i. Chairman Jones reported on the following special events: • Arbor Daze, April 23— Family Life Center 10 am —9 pm • HEB Summer Read Kickoff Party—April 30 at Pennington Field 10 am— 12 pm Upcoming • EFLC Open House, May 6— Family Life Center 5:30 am —8 pm • Masterwork Concert,June 10—The Bad Monkeys 7pm at Texas Star Golf Course Parks and Leisure Services Board Page 1 II. Volunteer of the Month a. Chairman Jones announced the May 2016 Volunteer of the Month award goes to the Ali family. Mrs. Ali and her two sons are a big help when it comes to the city events. They always ask to help with anything they can, and show up as requested at each event. They always stay after the event and help clean up, without being asked. We are very thankful to have them as a part of our volunteer group. The Ali family was not present, her award will be delivered to her. III. Beautification Award a. Chairman Jones announced the May 2016 Residential Yard of the Month is Mr. Eric Osterloh. With much time and effort put forth by the owner, the lawn is always kept green and trimmed. The flower bed and trees are well maintained and groomed. The large flowerbed include plants such as Salvia, Dwarf Youpon Hollies, Texas Sage, Zinnia and Knockout Roses. The large Red Oak tree in the front yard adds shade and an extra element to the yard. Mr. Osterloh was not present, his award will be delivered to him. b. Chairman Jones announced the May 2016 Business/Civic/Governmental Beautification award winner is the ACME Brick. Acme's lawn is always green and well kept. To accent the property, there are Cedar Elms surrounding the building in various locations and flower beds with many different types of flowers. They include Burford Hollies, Spiria, Red Yucca, Snapdragon Abelia, and Indian Hawthorn, just to name a few. Ms. Susan Marvel was present to accept the award, and thanked the board. IV. Business of the Tree Board Ms. Smith reported the following for April: a. Total man hours for April 1-30 = 657 • 376.00 Horticulture • 100.00 Forestry • 61.00 Greenhouse • 120.00 Special Projects • 0.00 Training • We gave away 1,020 trees at Arbor Daze Free Tree giveaway. • Removed debris at Trailwood Park after Bear Creek clean out. • Trimmed trees at Midway Park for Arbor Daze. • Removed tree limbs due to storm damage in parks. • Fertilized new trees that were planted. Community Services Report— Ray McDonald • Summer camp update. • Opening bid date for TX Star 60/90 field is May 3. • Update on ADA ramp installed at South Euless Park. • Tree City USA award —30 yrs and Growth Award 25 yrs. Chairman Jones thanked the staff for their reports. VI. Other New Business No new business. VII. Input from City Council Members and Visitors No input from City Council Members or visitors. ADJOURNMENT Chairman Jones gave the benediction.
