You know and I know that Euless Main Street is filled with great small businesses that really need our help right now. Please continue to eat and shop at these stores during the recon- struction of the Main Street Bridge. Our businesses need our support! September usually means cooler weather. So it's a great time to get out and experience some of the wonderful outdoor recreational facilities we have in Euless. A favorite of mine is Texas Star Golf Course. It is a beautiful place to spend a day golfing. And, if you've never played golf or need a refresher, the pro shop offers a variety of lessons and clinics. If you prefer something indoors, there's not a better place to enjoy a meal than on the patio at Raven's Grille. Fulfilling a promise to "Never Forget" their brothers and sisters who have died in the line of duty, 343 firefighters, 70 law enforcement officers and 9 EMTs (the number of firefighters/law enforcement/EMTs that perished with the collapse of the Twin Towers) climb 110 floors (the height of the former World Trade Center Twin Towers). Participants represent a first responder who lost their life in 9/11. They carry a tag and wear a badge with the name and photo of their honoree. Four Euless Firefighters and one alternate have been selected to climb the 110 floors this year. Registration is very exclusive. So many want to participate that registration fills up very quickly. In less than a minute this year, all 343 spots filled up for the opportunity to climb. Alternates are selected in case of no-shows, but because of all the post 9/11 deaths from cancer and other related illnesses, the alternates climb as well. Firefighters carry their full bunker gear and air packs which add an additional 80-100 pounds. Euless Fire Inspector/Investigator Drew Washington climbed last year and has been selected again this year. Last year he represented Lt. Michael Healey of Squad 41 and hopes to represent him again. "Most of us research who they were, what they did and where they were at the time. Lt. Healey wasn't even on duty. He grabbed his gear and got on a truck." There are climbs all over the country, but the Dallas climb is one of the largest climbs in the country so there are a lot of high-ranking FDNY and NYPD officer that come down for this event. There are a lot of symbolic rituals at the event including honor guard presentations, which included members of the Euless Police last year, ringing a bell every time someone places their accountability tag indicating that the individual they climbed for has made it to the top. Drew encourages people to come out, "I highly recommend everyone go out there to pay tribute and watch. It's like nothing you have ever seen." September 11 Observance Friday, September 9, 9 a.m. 9/11 Memorial, 201 N. Ector The City of Euless is the proud owner of an artifact from the World Trade Center. The artifact is a 12 - foot long, 6,000 -pound steel beam from the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. This memorial is displayed in front of the Euless Fire Administration Building as a memorial to the thousands killed that tragic day. Please join us for a ceremony to remember the lives of the heroes that were lost during the attack on our nation. * COMMUNITY News 817-685-1400 www.eulesstx.gov Water University: Seed Harvesting and Seed Saving September 22, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Euless City Hall, 201 N.
