Minutes
September 12, 2016
CALL TO ORDER
Chairwoman, Barbara Collier, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was
held at Euless City Hall at 201 N. Ector Drive, Euless.
MEMBERS PRESENT
Marilyn Long, Andy Weinzapfel, Helen Payton, Norma Lively, Gary Parker, David Massey,
Veva Lou Massey, Iris Elliott, Don Martin, Gary Fieldsend, Mavy Wright, Doris Brown,
Mary Lib Saleh, Weldon Cannon and Helen Payton.
STAFF PRESENT
Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Recreation Manager Suzanne
Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Mary Lib Saleh made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Norma Lively seconded
the motion, motion approved.
TREASURER'S REPORT
The previous balance was $11,636.74. There was a deposit of $54 and expenditures of
$50, leaving a current balance of $11 ,640.74.
STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS
1. Docent Reports / Recruitment—Mavy Wright
a. Quanah Parker's Great-great grandson, Lance Tahmahkera, was the guest speaker
at the September open house.
b. There were approximately 110 visitors who signed in on the log book. It was
standing room only inside the Museum.
c. Gary Parker asked if they could acquire additional chairs on rollers to keep in the
Museum in case they need to seat this many people again.
d. Mary Lib Saleh said the Library may have chairs they can give to the Museum.
e. Barbara Collier said she turned down the AC in the building so people can hear the
presentation.
f. Bill Golden will donate a speaker and mic to the Museum.
g. Andy Weinzapfel wondered why the event was such a great success in comparison
to other events put on by the Committee. In general the members agreed that it was
due to the great interest in the Quanah Parker story not to mention the length of
time the program was advertised before it took place.
h. May have "Smokey the Bear" attend the Christmas at the Park event in December.

2. Acquisitions—Gary Parker:
a. A farm implement was donated by Doris Brown. The implement was displayed to
the Committee but no one recognized what the implement was. Mr. Parker
conducted some research to try and identify the object but hasn't had any luck.
b. Mary Lib Saleh donated Coke bottles that's approximately 50 years old. The bottles
have never been opened.
c. The Committee declined to accept a donation of several scrapbooks from an old
Square Dancing group that used to meet in the area between the 1970's and 90's.
Barbara Collier will contact a different Square Dancing group to see if they would be
interested in the Scrapbooks.
3. Library Display—Marilyn Long and the Sub-committee are working on a display to go in
the Genealogy History Room. Staff is working on the labels. Mrs. Long plans to change
out the display four times a year.
4. Heritage Park—Gary Parker reported that work on the Blacksmith Shop could begin in
a couple of weeks.
5. Local Historical Marker—No Report
6. Publicity—Barbara Collier:
a. Gave stats about the traffic on the Museum's Facebook page.
b. Would like to have four speakers at the Museum per year.
c. Has not been able to look into speakers for the monthly Committee meetings.
7. Plaque—No Report
8. Display Signs—Barbara Collier indicated that several items in the Museum's collection
need to have signs made for them.
9. Oral History \ Photography:
a. Gary Fieldsend reported on his interesting interview with Joe Cannon. The interview
is still in the proofing process.
b. Norma Lively noted that she did Bill Byers' interview and that Mr. Byers has a great
interview already posted online.
c. Weldon Cannon has an interview he did of Ernest Millican in his possession.
d. Weldon Cannon suggested doing an interview of Jimmy Payton to record his
perspective on the north Euless annexation and his time as Euless' Mayor. Mr.
Cannon will send some questions to Gary Fieldsend to include in his interview of
Mr. Payton.
10. Historical Album Project—Marilyn Long:
a. There are piles of certificates and papers in the albums that need to be organized.
This is a work in progress and the Sub-committee is working on the albums.
b. Will order acid free sheet protectors from Gaylord to use on the project.

c. There are a lot of maps in the collection. Bill Golden will look for storage cabinets.
11.Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel:
a. Would like to metal detect at the Administration building site at the Euless First
United Methodist Church before the highway construction begins working on the
site.
b. Barbara Collier is in contact with TXDOT regarding the Committee's interest in the
location.
c. Mr. Weinzapfel expressed interest in metal detecting on the property across from
the Euless First United Methodist Church where the Grange Hall used to be
located. Gary Parker remembered that the location used to be a hill and about 9
feet of the ground was leveled in order to build the gas station currently located on
the site. Mr. Weinzapfel decided not to metal detect on the location after all.
12.Historic Tree Program—Andy Weinzapfel:
a. There are approximately twenty trees at the Preserve at McCormick Park and only
three of them are from Euless.
b. About ten historic tree sites have been identified in Euless and the surrounding
area. Mr. Weinzapfel will be meeting with Ray McDonald regarding the project.
c. Will be giving a presentation at the Texas Historic Tree Coalition.
COMMITTEE / OTHER REPORTS
1. Weldon Cannon talked about the Cannon Tractor painting and its acquisition by the
Museum. He talked about a sign that's leaning against the McCormick Barn in the
painting that says "Tarrant". Mr. Cannon reminisced about how he and Betty Fuller
made the sign and had Mrs. Fuller stand beside the railroad track holding the sign as
the train passed by. Mr. Cannon took a photograph of Betty Fuller holding the sign with
the train approaching in in 2003 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the railroad
coming through Tarrant.
2. Barbara Collier reported the following:
a. Mr. Tahmahkera asked if the $50 donation that the Committee gave him for
speaking on Saturday could be donated to the American Indian Benefit Alliance.
The Committee discussed donating an additional $100 to the foundation. Gary
Parker made a motion for the Committee to donate a $100 in addition to the $50
donation originally offered to Mr. Tahmahkera. Mary Lib Saleh seconded the
motion, all were in favor, motion carried.
b. Faye Stinneford has tickets for the Euless Fire / Police Academy fundraise dinner.
Please contact her for tickets.
3. Weldon Cannon attended a City of Southlake presentation on the history of aviation
and its impact on the area. Mr. Cannon donated materials on the subject that was
included in the display/presentation.

4. The Committee will participate in the Halloween event. After a brief discussion, Norma
Lively made a motion to spend $50 to purchase candy for the event. Marilyn Long
seconded the motion. All were in favor, motion carried.
STAFF REPORT
1. Staff will arrange for Texana to be present at the Heritage Park Christmas open house
in December.
ADJOURNMENT
Don Martin made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Andy Weinzapfel seconded the motion.
Motion approved.
