HomeMy WebLinkAboutEuless Today 2007 - 2008 Winter Spring.• 1.1.0 - • • ." IO/ Dear Citizens,l We are finally enjoying some cool weather and smells of autumn. We have been so fortunate this year with a wet spring and not too hot summer. Now if we can just get through the winter without an ice storm, it will be great. We do have lots of acorns everywhere and that generally means a cold, cold winter. Hopefully you all read the Budget issue we mailed out in early October. This is truly the best year financially in Euless history. Our sales and property taxes were up and the council lowered the tax rate two cents. We have many good improvements to look forward to this year. We plan to enlarge the library and add a historical room. Many citizens have given items of Euless history to our Historical Preservation Board and that group has really worked long hours to put together many interesting items of history. We also plan to enlarge the Texas Star Conference Centre and probably start the renovations early next year. The Conference Centre has been a real plus for Euless and after ten years we see the need for more room. We will be looking for additional space for our senior citizens center. We have outgrown the Simmons Center as our active seniors are participating more and more in our activities. They are a wonderful group of citizens that are truly enjoying life with friends. We have several new housing developments under construction and so far have not seen a downturn in the housing market. As you know, the Lowe's development on Glade and Hwy 121 is rapidly building out with more shops and restaurants. Across the highway, south of the Target store, the land has been cleared and the owners hope to start construction very soon. It will be the largest mixed-use development in Euless with many fine shops, restaurants, and later homes. It will have landscaping throughout the center. We have so many activities coming up and we encourage you to read through this issue and participate in some of the various events. We also encourage you to get a library card and enjoy all the events there for all ages. Boards and Commission members have been selected for the up coming year. We are so proud of our citizens that continue to devote their time, talents and energy to volunteer for our city. There are so many ways to volunteer and Jerry Poteet in our Parks and Leisure Services department can show you all the opportunities where can volunteer. And if you have not gone through our Police and Fire academies, you've missed a treat. Our Fire and Police alumni groups do so much for our Police and Fire Departments from watering plants in the Police Building to riding out with Citizens on Patrol (COPS) in the beautiful new car furnished by Allen Samuels Dodge. The Fire alumni are always there to assist our firemen whenever and wherever. Many, many thanks. Thanks to all of you for caring for our city in many ways. TOGETHER WE ARE PREPARING A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR ALL CITIZENS. 111NrWelcome Mary Lib Saleh Mayor The City of Euless Mission Statement To provide citizens the best and most efficient services possible that protect and enhance quality of life through planning and visionary leadership. Volunteers assist the City in a variety of ways, often working long hours without pay or recognition for the benefit of Euless. In turn, the City picks one person each year that embodies the very definition of a Volunteer to celebrate the dedication and service of these outstanding people and the difference they have made in the community. The Volunteer of the Year Award for 2007 has been awarded to Barney Snitz. Fitting the true definition of a volunteer, he spends his time helping out a variety of organizations and making Euless a better place to live. He has assisted with nearly every special event the city hosts from the Texas Trash Off to Arbor Daze to the Bicycle Rodeo to the Halloween Festival. In addition, he sits on the Library Board, Crime Control and Prevention Board and is a member of the Citizens Police and Fire Academy Alumni Associations, He is a graduate of the Community Emergency Readiness Team and serves on the Euless Local Law Enforcement Advisor Board, Citizens on Linda Martin Place 3 Charlie Miller Place 4 e. Glenn Porterfield Place 5 Perry Bynum Place 6 817-685-1400 1 and is an active volunteer, serving in both the Citizens Police and Fire Academy Alumni Associations. She did a fabulous job that day and continued to quickly rise to the top of what Volunteer Coordinator Jerry Poteet calls his "top echelon volunteers." She volunteered her time for the Parks and Community Services department during her junior and senior years of high school. Poteet commented, "Brittini is a special volunteer. Iva Fuller Nail also worked in the post office and grew up in the original Fuller House now located in historic Heritage Park. Robert and Iva were married in front of the parlor fireplace in 1952. On their 50th wedding anniversary, the Nails renewed their vows in front of that same fireplace in the newly renovated house. Both are active on the Euless Historical Preservation Committee and the First United Methodist Church. They have been married 55 years. Our congratulations go out to all of this year's winners. Thank you for your time and energy that you spend to help make Euless great! Residents of Tarrant County with special needs or permanent disabilities now have the ability to make their situations known to emergency responders. The Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP) has been initiated by the Fort Worth -Tarrant County Office of Emergency Management for maintaining vital information on persons with special needs or permanent disabilities to better provide aid in the event of a disaster or other life threatening emergency. Residents of Tarrant County are encouraged to register each year to provide disability -specific information, such as the need for life support systems or mobility aids. Information received by the Office of Emergency Management for the SNAP Program is kept confidential and used only by emergency response agencies. Euless residents may register directly online at www.snapforyou.org. If you should need registration assistance or have questions please contact Joe Kraft with the Euless Office of Emergency Management at 817-685-3144. Change a Light, Change the World Lights replaced with energy-efficient ones can add up in energy, monetary and environmental savings. ENERGY STAR -qualified light bulbs and fixtures use 75% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and can last up to ten times longer. Just one ENERGY STAR qualified light bulb can save about $30 or more in energy costs over its lifetime, while preventing more than 400 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. Together, we can help light the way to greater energy efficiency and a brighter future. Commemorative Euless Afghan Looking for a new hobby that can be applied to either personal enjoyment or public service? Curious about amateur radio or already licensed to operate? Come and join us at Amateur Radio Euless (ARE). Amateur radio, also known as "ham radio" operators use their hobby for personal enjoyment in communicating with people across town or around the world. Other operators use their hobby to assist Emergency Management programs for communication situations such as severe storm reporting. Operators around the country have provided emergency communications in disaster situations. Amateur Radio Euless has participated in numerous local events such as Arbor Daze where members have assisted in locating lost children or filling other communication needs. A license to operate amateur radio is easy to obtain. It can be obtained through classes sponsored by various radio clubs or it can be obtained through self -study. It does NOT require Morse code. The Amateur Radio Euless club can assist you in studying for your license and has members who can administer the examination when you are ready. The Euless Town Hall meetings will be held on January 10 and January 24 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall. Representatives from all City departments will be on site to take your questions, comments or suggestions. For more information, please call (817) 685-1563. On the second Saturday of each month, the Euless Historical Preservation Committee opens the Fuller House Museum, the Himes Log House and the McCormick Barn to the public and gives guided tours down memory lane. Located at 201 Cullum Drive, Heritage Park is home to the first brick home in Euless, the Himes Log House which is the oldest structure in Euless and the newest addition to the park, the McCormick barn, which was originally constructed by hand in 1919. The park is filled with the rich history of the city of Euless with many artifacts and relics on display and throughout the park that serve as a link between Euless' past and present.
