HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-11-14 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes November 14, 2016 CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman, Barbara Collier, called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall at 201 N. Ector Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown, Michele Burger, Bill Byers, Weldon Cannon, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Bill Golden, Leon Hogg, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Andy Weinzapfel and Mavy Wright. VISITORS Mark Favorite and Al Browning. STAFF PRESENT Director of Parks and Community Services Ray McDonald, Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Gary Parker made a motion to approve the minutes as written. David Massey seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $11,559.74. There was a $50 purchase of candy for the Halloween event and $18 from the donation jar leaving a current balance of$11,527.74. ITEMS TO APPROVE AND DISCUSS 1. Update to the legend for the Mural a. It was discussed that a brochure needs to be made to include the legend for the Mural. After some discussion about ways to have the new tri-fold made, it was decided that staff will be given the information to have it made. 2. Fence from the Bridge over Highway 183 a. Gary Parker mentioned asking staff to mount the fence piece at Heritage Park. A display sign with a description will be posted with the display. The Star-Telegram had an article about the Bridge that could be used. 3. Computer for the Museum a. Barbara Collier expressed the need for a computer in the Museum to do various things. After a brief discussion, Bill Golden made a motion to buy a personal computer with a large screen monitor for the Museum. Don Martin seconded the motion. No one opposed. Motion approved. HPC MTG 121216 Page 1 b. Bill Golden will research the computer and make the purchase. Funds to purchase the computer will come out of the Committee's funds. c. The City will be asked to install the computer. 4. Christmas Decoration of Fuller House a. Mavy Wright, Helen Payton and Gary Parker will decorate the House. Linda Pool will also help decorate. b. Gary Parker will donate Christmas decorations for the project. 5. Stage in the Museum a. Barbara Collier and Gary Parker discussed putting Plexiglas across the stage, possibly removing the fence along the stage and/or removing the stage completely so the space where the stage is located can be used more proficiently. It was thought that people can't see over the fence. Staff has to check with building officials, Codes, Facilities, etc. about the request before anything can be done. 6. Miscellaneous Doors at the Museum a. Gary Parker asked if doors left inside the Museum by the City can be removed. Staff will have them removed. b. Gary Parker will shop for old, antique doors to install as dividers in the main room in the Museum. 7. Stained Glass Window a. The wires for Methodist Church stained glass window display was cut when water flooded in the area. Staff will have the wires fixed. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports/ Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. There were approximately 30 visitors at open house on Saturday, November 12, 2016. b. A signup list for Christmas in the Park on Saturday, December 10, 2016 was passed around. c. Barbara Collier asked for an email to be sent to the Committee asking for docents for Christmas in the Park. d. The City pays a distribution company to distribute the Historical brochure to various locations around the area. 2. Acquisitions—Bill Byers a. Mr. Byers' sister found an article written by Nadine Womack, Mr. Byers' 2nd grade teacher and tickets to the Audi Murphy Rodeo. The items have been donated to the Museum. b. Acquired an area photo of Hwy 10 with the Voss business and property in the photo. Bill Golden would like to acquire the Voss business sign to display at Heritage Park. 3. Library Display—Marilyn Long HPC MTG 121216 Page 2 a. The current exhibit is still on display and will be replaced around January, 2017. Ms. Long and the sub-committee will review the next set of items to be displayed. 4. Heritage Park—Gary Parker a. The outside of the Fuller House was re-painted and it looks good. b. The exit door in the northeast bedroom is damaged. Staff has turned in a workorder and Facilities is in the process of fixing it. c. Al Browning suggested asking 6-Stones to help build the Blacksmith. Mr. Browning will check with 6-Stones and report back to the Committee. 5. Local Historical Marker—No Report 6. Publicity—Bill Golden a. The representative from the Texas Forestry Association dropped off the Smokey the Bear sign. She suggested having a small ceremony when the Blacksmith is completed where she could give a presentation about fire prevention and bring out Smokey the Bear. 7. Plaque—No Report 8. Display Signs—No Report 9. Oral History\ Photography—No Report 10.Historical Album Project—Marilyn Long a. Currently putting together the Fallen Officer Album. Leon Hogg suggested including information on Officer Michael Williamson in the album. Officer Williamson was the first Euless police officer to be killed in the line of duty. 11.Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel is currently waiting for the Administration Building at the Euless First United Methodist Church to be torn down so he can metal detect the location. 12.Historic Tree Program Andy Weinzapfel a. Mr. Weinzapfel and Randy Leach with the Parks Department toured several historical sights to collect samples for the tree farm at the Preserve at McCormick Park. b. He asked if possible to have a website for the historical tree program. COMMITTEE / OTHER REPORTS 1. Gary Parker asked for an update on adding more outlets to the inside of the Museum. Staff reported that since the building is so old, Facilities has to hire an Electrician to tear into the walls to look at the current wiring system before it can be determined HPC MTG 121216 Page 3 whether the locations and amount of outlets requested by Mr. Parker can be done. The Committee agreed to pay for an Electrician to do the work. Staff will need to consult building officials, Codes, Facilities, etc. regarding ADA requirements and other building code requirements, etc. before anything can be done to the building. 2. Barbara Collier reminded the Committee about the Wednesday workday from 10am and noon. Everyone was invited to visit and help during the workday. 3. Michele Burger attended an "Apron Exhibit" at North Richland Hills and there were a lot of people. The Committee expressed interest in having visiting exhibits during open house. 4. Mavy Wright indicated that the plaque dedication and appreciation event for Bill and Boyce Byers was a great success. 5. Michele Burger distributes historical brochures to various destinations around the State. 6. Bill Golden expressed gratitude to the City and staff for all their help and assistance. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff provided information on cost, etc. for a PA system that the Committee requested. The PA system will be around $200. After a brief discussion Andy Weinzapfel made a motion to purchase the system. Leon Hogg seconded the motion. No one opposed, motion carried. Staff will purchase the system and it will be kept in the Museum. 2. Reminded the Committee that their next meeting will be at the Golf Course on Monday, December 12, 2016 at 10 a.m. 3. Asked the Committee to clean up the kitchen in the Museum in preparation for Christmas in the Park event. Staff will be using the kitchen during the event. ADJOURNMENT Don Martin made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Andy Weinzapfel seconded the motion. Motion approved.
