HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-10-10 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes October 10, 2016 CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman, Barbara Collier, called the meeting to order at 9:58 a.m. The meeting was held at Euless City Hall at 201 N. Ector Drive, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Bill Byers, Weldon Cannon, Mary Cinquemani, Barbara Collier, Iris Elliott, Bill Golden, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Robert Nail, Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Linda Pool, Mary Lib Saleh, Faye Stinneford, Helen Voss and Mavy Wright. VISITORS Mike Pool and Tom Salmi STAFF PRESENT Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator Ofa Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mary Lib Saleh made a motion to approve the minutes as written. Norma Lively seconded the motion, motion approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $11,640.74. There was a $100 donation to the American Indian Benefit Alliance, a deposit of$12 from the money jar and $7 from the donation box leaving a current balance of$11,559.74. GUEST SPEAKER Robert Nail recently donated his stamp collection to the City of Euless. Suzanne Hendrickson gave a presentation about the inventory and the work that went into preserving the collection. The collection will be added to the PastPerfect inventory and a grand opening / unveiling of the collection will be done to promote the collection and Museum. Members of the Committee were very happy about the donation. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports / Recruitment—Mavy Wright a. There were approximately 17 visitors at open house on Saturday, October 8. b. A signup sheet for volunteer docents for open house on Saturday, November 12, 2016 was passed around. c. Barbara Collier discussed the possibility of opening the Museum during the Greek Festival on the weekend of October 15, 2016. The members voted not to participate this year. HPC MTG 111416 Page 1 2. Acquisitions—Bill Byers: a. Acquired a roller "thing" that might have been used when planting seeds. The Sub- committee isn't really sure of what the implement would've been called. b. Weldon Cannon displayed a belt buckle that his wife Patricia Benoit found online. The front of the belt buckle shows the old Santa Fe Railroad tower that used to be located near the southwest side of Highway 157. Euless is written on the face of the buckle and "Made in the USA" is written on the back. Mr. Cannon donated the buckle to the City. A donation form needs to be filled out for the donation. 3. Library Display—Marilyn Long: a. A display called "Children's World Prior to 1900" is currently on display. b. Signs promoting open house at the Museum are on display. c. Suggested putting up various posters of the stamp collection in the room. 4. Heritage Park—Gary Parker: a. The Fuller House was painted. b. Back bedroom door at Fuller House needs to be checked for repairs. c. Ants outside the building. Staff will turn in work order to fix the issue. 5. Local Historical Marker—No Report 6. Publicity—Bill Golden: a. Suggested having speakers do a presentation about the "Buffalo Soldiers", who were black soldiers who fought during the Civil War. b. A representative from the Texas Forestry Association will drop off a Smokey the Bear poster to the Museum on October 26, 2016 at 11 a.m. c. Would like a PA system for when speakers come to the Museum. 7. Plaque—No Report 8. Display Signs—No Report 9. Oral History\ Photography—No Report 10.Historical Album Project—Marilyn Long: a. Reported a large pile of materials that needs to be sorted and organized. b. Still unsure of how to acquire books to use for the Album project. c. Still reviewing ways to organize the fallen Euless Police Officer articles. 11.Artifact Recovery—No Report 12.Historic Tree Program—No Report COMMITTEE / OTHER REPORTS HPC MTG 111416 Page 2 1. The Committee wanted $50 worth of candy for the Halloween event on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Staff purchased the candy. 2. Various members thanked the City for their support and help with various Committee projects. 3. Don Martin thanked Linda Pool for providing snacks for the meeting. 4. Veva Lou Massey expressed her gratitude to Robert Nail for donating the Stamp Collection to the Museum. 5. Faye Stinneford has tickets for the Fire and Police Academy annual fundraising on October 22 and November 12 consecutively. The tickets are $15 each. 6. Mary Cinquemani works at the Grapevine Visitors Bereau Center. She would be glad to put out Euless brochures at the visitor's station. STAFF REPORT 1. Staff had no additional reports. ADJOURNMENT Gary Parker made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Faye Stinneford seconded the motion. Motion approved.
