OF THE
EULESS ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY BOARD
JULY 20, 2016
ITEM 1 — CALL TO ORDER
A regular meeting of the Euless Animal Shelter Advisory Board was called to order by
Director of Public Works and Engineering Hal Cranor at 11:35 A.M. at the City of Euless
Public Works Facility, 1513 Westpark Way, Euless, Texas 76040.
The following members were in attendance:

ITEM 2 — REVIEW & APPROVE MEETING MINUTES FROM APRIL 13, 2016
Director Cranor asked if there were any comments or questions regarding the minutes
of April 13, 2016. With no questions or comments, the minutes were accepted as
written.
ITEM 3 — UPDATE ON GAP
Ms. Vela thanked the City for the dog park at the Animal Shelter. She mentioned a
couple of requests from the volunteers that included: 1) Reinforcement on the bottom of
the fence in the play yard to prevent the more active dogs from getting out and
2) Installation of a water faucet in the dog yard. Assistant Director of Public Works
James Whitt stated that there is a plan to pour a concrete pad in the northeast corner of
the yard with a "hitching post" and a water pump that will allow the volunteers to bathe
the dogs or to help the dogs cool off. Ms. Vela also thanked the City for the kitty kennel
that provides cat trees and climbing areas for the cats in the Animal Shelter. She
reported that GAP volunteers working Saturdays at the shelter, various fund raising
events, and the financial support from the City, are helping GAP with vetting costs and
shots. She included examples of a small dog that had large stones that needed to be

surgically removed and "Rex", a dog whose jaw had been kicked and broken that
needed extensive medical care. Ms. Vela also shared that Trinity GAP now has 4,000
Facebook followers. The Trinity GAP Pet Fair is to be help on September 24th from
10am-2pm at Trinity High School. The Pet Fair will include TCAP, $20 microchipping, a
garage sale, and various vendors. Ms. Vela shared that her family has opened a doggie
day care boarding and training facility, "The Mutt Shack" and have been able to place
several GAP dogs that have been in long term at this facility. "The Mutt Shack" is
located at 8415 Davis in North Richland Hills at the corner of Davis and N. Tarrant and
offers boarding, training, and a day care.
ITEM 4 — SHELTER FACILITY UPDATE
Supervisor Atkinson reported that there has been a wooden fence added to the back of
the animal shelter yard, with plans to plant a tree near it in the fall. Supervisor Atkinson
and Foreman Spargur met with Animal Control in Grapevine about being called when
they have an abused animal turned in to their shelter. Euless ACOs will either pick up
the animal or they can bring the animal to our shelter. They have spoken with the City of
Irving and met with the City of Bedford regarding the same.
ITEM 5 — PERSONNEL REPORT
Animal Control Supervisor Atkinson reported that Animal Control Officer Jared Kraft has
gotten his euthanasia certification which has brought him up to date on his Basic Animal
Control and Euthanasia licenses.
ITEM 6 — QUARTERLY REPORT
Animal Control Supervisor Atkinson reported:
• Out of 111 dogs brought into the shelter in April-May-June, 36 were
returned to their owners.
• 50% increase of dogs and cats that went to GAP from 2015 (43) to 2016
(82).
• Numbers of cat euthanasias have decreased from this time period in
2015.
• Clear The Shelter to be held on July 23rd. 65 shelters will be participating.
PetCo has donated $200 to help with vet care, rabies vaccinations,
microchipping, 5 in 1 shot, etc., due to a grant distributed to each
participating shelters.
• GAP Walk-A-Ton in honor of Officer David Hofer: $14,600 raised to go
towards injured animals, shots, and spay/neuter. The large number of
participants enabled them to raise additional funds for Officer Hofer's
family.

ITEM 7 — DANGEROUS DOG ORDINANCE CHANGE
Mr. Barker reported that Mayor and Council changed City ordinance to mirror State law
which prohibits the disposal of the animal during the appeal process and requires a
deposit to cover the cost of care of the dog during the appeal.
ITEM 8 — QUESTIONS / COMMENTS
Director Cranor reminded the Board of the next scheduled meeting on November 16tH
Increased numbers for dead animal pick up were discussed and attributed to the patrol
of ACOs as opposed to relying solely on calls for service. Mr. Barker inquired about the
possibility of the Presidential Service Award at Trinity High School for volunteer service
hours and what steps would need to be done for the certification process.
