Dear Citizens,
Drowning is the
leading cause of
death for children
1-4 years of age
and the second
leading cause of
death for children
5-14 years of age. In the upcoming
months, you will see some more
information from the City of Euless
about water safety and drowning
prevention. I strongly encourage
you to watch your kids when they
are in and around water without
distraction. Put the phones down.
I know it's hard to get things done
without a little multitasking, but
this is the time to avoid distractions
of any kind. If children are near
water, they should be the only
thing on your mind.
Drowning is quick and silent and
watching your child in the water is
your responsibility. This includes
bathtubs, pools and natural water.
Teach your children to swim and
the five water survival skills and
then take the time to learn CPR and
basic rescue skills. Their lives are
too important!

Pool Safety
With warmer weather just around the corner, it's a
good time to make sure your pool is safe and
familiarize yourself with city regulations and
general safety tips regarding pools. Drowning is
the leading cause of injury death among children
age 1-4 years old. Among the children that are
younger than 4 years old, 50.1% of fatal incidents
occurred in swimming pools.
The City of Euless requires that all private pools
(single-family residence) be enclosed with at least
a six-foot fence of wood construction or better. The
fence must be equipped with self-closing and self-
latching gates.
Take Extra Steps Around Pools
•Make sure backyard pools have four-sided
fencing that's at least 4 feet high and a self-closing,
self-latching gate to prevent a child from wandering
into the pool area unsupervised.
•When using inflatable or portable pools,
remember to empty them immediately after use.
Store them upside down and out of children's
reach.
•Install a door alarm, a window alarm or
both to alert you if a child wanders into the pool
area unsupervised.
•Educate your children about the dangers of
drain entanglement and entrapment and teach
them to never play or swim near drains or suction
outlets.
Learn to Swim
When kids are in or near water (including
bathtubs), closely supervise them at all times.
Because drowning happens quickly and quietly,
adults watching kids in or near water should avoid
distracting activities like playing cards, reading
books, talking on the phone and using alcohol.
Watch your kids when they are in and around
water, without distraction.
It is important to teach your children to swim and
the 5 Water Survival Skills. Research shows that
formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of
drowning among children 1-4 years. Swimming
lessons save lives and can also reduce the risk of
drowning among older individuals as well. The
Natatorium at the Euless Family Life Center
regularly offers swimming lessons for all ages and
all skill levels. For additional information, call
817-685-1666 or check the Euless Playbook for
classes and schedules.
5 Water Survival Skills
Learn these 5 survival skills that could save your
life in the water.
1. Step or jump into water over your head and
return to the surface.
2. Float or tread water for one minute.
3. Turn around in a full circle and find an exit
from the water.
4. Swim 25 yards to the exit.
5. Exit from the water. If in a pool, be able to
exit without using the ladder.
Citizens Fire Academy
Much like the Citizens Police Academy, the
Citizens Fire Academy is a program designed to
show Euless citizens what their fire department
does on a daily basis.
Participants learn about the capabilities of
firefighters and emergency medical personnel
through lectures and hands-on demonstrations.
Topics include:
•The history of the Euless Fire Department
•Use of self-contained breathing apparatus
and protective firefighter clothing
•Search and rescue operations
•CFA Fire hose methods
•Vehicle extrication
•Emergency medical operations and CPR
•Live fire training scenarios
•And much more!
This 13-week class meets one evening a week with
two optional Saturday exercises available for
willing participants. The class is free of charge for
citizens who live or work in the City of Euless. To
sign up for the next available class, please fill out
and return the CFA Application Brochure. For
more information about the class, please call 817-
685-1600, or visit the Euless Citizens Fire
Academy Alumni Association website.

Services Summer Camp, a lottery system is being used from
now until Friday, March 10, 2017 at midnight. Registration
for the lottery may be done on-line at www.playeuless.org
and clicking on "Online Registration" or in-person at the

the most convenient way to register and the most equitable
way of making our camps available to the greatest number
of interested participants. The Parks and Community
Services Department will give Returning Campers who are
Euless residents' priority access to register for summer camp,
followed by new Euless residents and then non-residents.

New Families Activity # - 211102-01
