HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-02-02 TEEN COURT ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES MEETING OF FEBRUARY 2, 2017 STATE OF TEXAS § COUNTY OF TARRANT § CITY OF BEDFORD § The Teen Court Advisory Board of the cities of Hurst, Euless and Bedford, Texas met at 6:00 p.m. at Bedford City Hall on the 2nd day of February 2017, with the following members present: HURST: Lorrie Dickerson, Aaron Switzer, Jen Tucker, Destiny Froust EULESS: Robin Edwards, Katie Shue, Renu Sloan, Moses Vakalahi BEDFORD: Janet Key, Jung Kim, Kathleen Toms TEEN REPRESENTATIVES: Hurst Council Liaison —Trasa Cobern Bedford Council Liaison— Dave Gebhart Euless Council Liaison — Eddie Price HEB Teen Court Coordinator— Mindy Eichorst HEB Teen Court Assistant— Also present: Hurst City Secretary— Rita Frick Euless Staff Liaison —Teresa Alexander Bedford Court Manager—Doug Campbell Hurst Court Manager— HEB Teen Court Teen Liaison- Bedford Administrative Services Director- CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Kathleen Toms called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. with a quorum of eleven Board Members present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Consider approval of the following Teen Court Advisory Board minutes: a) January 5, 2017 Regular Meeting Lorrie Dickerson made a motion to approve the January 5, 2017 minutes and Renu Sloan seconded the motion and all were in favor. 2. Introductions Advisory Board Member Katie Shue, appointed by the City of Euless, was introduced. Everyone introduced themselves and stated which city they represented. Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst handed out a folder to Ms. Shue and went over the next Teen Court dates to come and observe. OFFICER ELECTIONS OLD BUSINESS 3. Discuss ideas for fundraisers/sponsorship. Advisory Board Member Secretary Jen Tucker assisted with putting together a tri-fold brochure with sponsorship information. Ms. Eichorst will be providing her with some statistics to add to the brochure. The brochure was seen by all of the Advisory Board Members. 4. Discuss and possibly take action on items as they relate to the 2017 annual Teen Court Gala. Secretary Jen Tucker and Chairperson Kathleen Toms, Gala Committee Members, spoke about their decision to have Mr. Charles Clark, Custodian at Trinity High School, be the speaker at the Gala. Advisory Board Member Moses Vakalahi mentioned he spoke with Mr. Clark and he was honored to be speaking at the Teen Court Scholarship Gala on April 27, 2017. There was a unanimous vote by the Board Members to have Mr. Clark as the speaker for the Gala. Mr. Clark does not have a speaker's fee but a nice gesture of$150 gift card was suggested. Everyone was in favor and this was a unanimous decision. Secretary Jen Tucker mentioned she will update the brochure with speaker information. The silent auction company All for G0000000d is willing to assist for the Gala on April 27, 2017 and Ms. Eichorst will contact them to see if they will be available to come and speak to the Advisory Board, possibly at the next meeting. Advisory Board Member Renu Sloan suggested the idea of doing a live auction on some select items. Kathleen Toms asked that each Board Member bring two or three silent auction items to the Gala. The Scholarship Committee Members presented their recommendations for the four scholarship recipients. Aaron Switzer talked a little about each of the four recipients: Madeline Burnell, Olivia Cunningham, Nisha Dalai, and Katrina Mikhail and recommended that all four receive $1,000 scholarships. This was a unanimous vote by all of the Advisory Board Members. NEW BUSINESS 5. Discuss the retirement/hiring of Teen Court Assistant position. Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst mentioned that Teen Court Assistant Linda Stone will be retiring on February 28, 2017. Linda Stone has been with the City of Bedford for a total of 23 years (part-time and full-time, with the last twelve years working in Teen Court). Ms. Eichorst mentioned the job has been posted and she is in the process of setting up interviews. She also mentioned since this will leave one staff person in Teen Court that she will need a little more assistance with the Gala. This will include on April 27, 2017, the night of the Gala. Chairperson Kathleen Toms suggested that the Advisory Board present Linda with a plaque and a gift card. A decision to spend no more than $35 on a plaque was reached. Moses Vakalahi made a motion and Robin Edwards seconded the motion. A decision to give Linda a $100 gift card was reached. Lorrie Dickerson made a motion and Kathleen Toms seconded the motion. Both motions passed unanimously. 6. Discuss and possibly take action on a date for the Teen Court Scholarship Gala Committee to meet. Chairperson Kathleen Toms made a motion to meet on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. and Vice- Chairperson Lorrie Dickerson seconded the motion. This was a unanimous vote. Advisory Board Member Renu Sloan has decided to be on the Gala Committee. 7. Discuss and possibly take action on a date for the next Teen Court Advisory Board Meeting. Chairperson Kathleen Toms made a motion to have the next meeting on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at Bedford City Hall, and Vice-Chairperson Lorrie Dickerson seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. REPORTS Teen Court Coordinator Mindy Eichorst went over the Coordinator's Report and Finance Report for the month of January 2017. ADJOURNMENT Aaron Switzer entered a motion for the meeting to be adjourned. Moses Vakalahi seconded the motion and all voted in favor.
