HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-02-13 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes February 13, 2017 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson, Mavy Wright, called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was held at the Euless City Hall, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Gary Parker, Barbara Collier, Mavy Wright, Doris Brown, Iris Elliott, Weldon Cannon, Faye Stinneford, Helen Voss, Al Browning, Norma Lively, Andy Weinzapfel, Bill Byers, Marilyn Long, Don Martin and Linda Pool. Gary Fieldsend and Helen Payton sent their regrets. VISITORS Mayor Linda Martin and Patty Benoit STAFF PRESENT Director of Parks and Community Services, Ray McDonald; Recreation Manager Suzanne Hendrickson and Projects Coordinator, Ofa Faiva-Siale. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Norma Lively made a motion to approve the minutes. Helen Voss seconded the motion. All were in in favor, minutes approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $11,302.33. There was a deposit of$25 from the money jar, leaving a current balance of$11,327.33. GUEST SPEAKER Barbara Collier gave a very interesting presentation about work she and a group of volunteers did at the Dobkins Cemetery in late, 2016. They cleaned up and restored headstones, cleared debris and dead tree trunks, mowed, and performed other restoration work on the property. She displayed a before and after photo of the site and the Members appreciated the great work that Ms. Collier and the group did. Members of the Dobkins family, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Gary Fieldsend, and others from the Historical Preservation Committee, as well as a Girl Scout Troop worked on the project. They plan to clean the cemetery quarterly and Ms. Collier has a key to the cemetery. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS HPC Mtg. Page 1 of 3 1. Docent Reports/Recruitment—Gary Parker a. Reported there were approximately 20 visitors at the February open house. 2. Acquisition—Mavy Wright a. Staff is getting caught up entering the inventory into the PastPerfect database. It may be another six-months or so before they are ready to enter additional artifacts. Accepting donations could be placed on hold until after staff gets caught up. 3. Library Display—Marilyn Long a. The current display is titled "Children's World". This will be changed out in the near future. b. Will meet with the sub-committee to review goals and plans for the future. There's also a process for tracking and moving items between buildings, locations etc.,that will need to be followed. 4. Heritage Park Coordinator—Gary Parker a. Staff is working on the Blacksmith Shop. It will be completed in the near future. 5. Euless Marker—no report 6. Publicity/Program/Speakers—Barbara Collier a. Proposed having a grand opening event for the Blacksmith Shop with hotdogs, water and cookies. Smokey Bear will be invited and perhaps a Fire Truck could also be on property for the event. Faye Stinneford will check with the Fire Department to see if this would be possible. They plan to hire the "Buttermilk Junction Band"to perform for a couple of hours. An estimate of about$600 for the event was proposed. Barbara Collier made a motion to approve the plans for the event and to be allowed to spend approximately$600 of the Committee's funds for the event. After a brief discussion, Weldon Cannon seconded the motion. All were in favor, no one opposed, motion carried. Staff will advertise the event accordingly. 7. Plaque—Faye Stinneford a. If anyone would like to honor someone, names can be added to the plaque. Still need to add the new officer's names to the plaque. 8. Display Signs—No Report 9. Photography/Oral History a. Staff is still working on Joe Cannon's interview. 10. Historical Albums—Marilyn Long a. Has been working with Doris Brown to put together specific jobs in preparation for the upcoming work day. 11. Artifact Recovery—Andy Weinzapfel a. Will be going to Colorado for several weeks. Metal detecting at the Admin Building location at the First United Methodist Church of Euless is pending its demolition. HPC Mtg. Page 2 of 3 12. Historical Tree Program—Andy Weinzapfel a. Putting together information for the website. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Two new Committee members were introduced at City Council; Anniece McKanna and Kathey Knecht. STAFF REPORT 1. A draft of the legend for the mural was handed out for the members to proof. 2. On March 21, 2017 the Committee will have a planning session to plan various upcoming projects for the Committee.The meeting will be in the Pre-Council Chambers from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided, everyone is invited. 3. After a brief discussion, the Members decided not to participate in Arbor Daze this year but Staff will make sure that brochures about Heritage Park are handed out at the event. COMMITTEE REPORT 1. Weldon Cannon noted that April 16, 2017 will mark the 100th Anniversary of WWI. Reported that there are a lot of information in the Arlington Journal pertaining to everything that Euless did to help in the war efforts. He suggested the possibility of having any small event to commemorate WWI. The Committee was very interested in doing something with respect to Mr. Cannon's suggestion. 2. Weldon Cannon indicted that there was a photo online of a water tower and it should say the water tower was located at the Euless Nursery. The current location is incorrect. ADJOURNMENT Al Browning made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Linda Pool seconded the motion. Motion approved.
