Dear Citizens,
One of the
best times of
the year is
when we get a
chance to
celebrate our City's volunteers.
Getting involved in your
community is easy as there are
many opportunities throughout
the year. Just scan through
Euless Today and you'll see
events being held that always
need volunteer help. Outside of
volunteering for events, we have
a variety of Boards and
Commissions that need citizens
to fill positions, participants in
events such as the Christmas
parade and departments like
Animal Services that always
welcome help. Whatever your
interest or passion, we have an
opportunity for you to get
involved. And if you need a
little inspiration, enjoy this
issue that highlights a few of
our great volunteers.
Did you know...?
City offices will be closed Monday, May
29th. Trash and recycling services will
not be affected.

2016 Volunteers of the Year
Awarded
Euless volunteers consistently give their time and
energy to make our community FabEuless. In
turn, the City of Euless honors volunteers each
year to celebrate the dedication and service of
these outstanding people.
Volunteer of the Year - LuAnn Portugal
Variety is the spice of life and no one knows that
better than LuAnn Portugal. LuAnn has graciously
donated her time and energy to nearly every
department in the City of Euless. Those
departments include Parks, Library, Planning &
Development, Fire and Police to name a few. For
the past 14 years she has been a dedicated P&Z
Board Member and prior to that served on the
Library Board for nine years. In addition, LuAnn
volunteers at special events, with the Police and
Fire Alumni Associations and is a Lifetime
member of the Euless Library Foundation. LuAnn
has a real heart for serving her community. She
loves Euless and wants to make it the best city it
can be.
Planning & Economic Development Director
Mike Collins said, "P&Z requires a strong
technical knowledge of zoning and development
standards along with a good dose of common
sense. LuAnn always comes fully prepared to a
meeting. She asks good questions and follows her
heart if something doesn't seem right."
Library Administrator Sherry Knight said, "She's
a passionate library supporter and attends every
single library board meeting. She has a real love of
the Public Library and everything it stands for."
Volunteer Business of the Year -
Lowe's Home Improvement
Lowe's Home Improvement
has been a great community
partner from the beginning.
Most recently they provided
some assistance at J.A. Carr
Park through the Lowe's
Heroes program that encourages Lowe's employees to
team together and adopt a project. Euless Lowe's
Manager Candy Bauer and her team chose Carr Park
and over 50 employees donated their time to provide
some extensive work there including clearing out
vegetation and installing a railing along the creek,
pressure washing the pavilion, adding mulch to the
playground, painting barriers for better visibility,
installing a Policeman's Prayer Plaque and a bench as
well as removing some concrete slabs from the creek.
This beautiful park has been in Euless for many years
and now it is even more beautiful than before. Thank
you Lowe's for being a part of something bigger.
Volunteer Youth of the Year - Charlotte Lewis
Charlotte Lewis has
volunteered for several of our
special events since 2015 and
has already made a positive
impact on our community.
Each year she has helped at
several special events such as Arbor Daze, Christmas
Parade of Lights and Heritage Park Christmas.
Volunteer Coordinator Jerry Poteet said, "Charlotte
always has a positive attitude, a winning smile to our
residents, and is always willing to help in any way
needed."
Volunteer Group Award -
Euless Library Foundation
This category is new this year
and the first recipient is no
surprise. The Euless Library
Foundation (ELF) is a non-
profit organization of caring
volunteers who give gifts of
time, energy, ideas and financial support to the Library
and our community. ELF supports the Summer
Reading Challenge as well as other special

performances that are not covered by the
Library's annual budget. One of the big
fundraising efforts is the semi-annual book
sale which takes a tremendous amount of
volunteer hours year-round. In addition to all
of the work that goes into the Book Sale itself,
volunteers sort and organize the books
throughout the year as donations arrive. They
are also passionate about public art and have
provided a variety of artwork to the Library
that is available to the community in an
interesting and educational manner.
Lifetime Achievement Award -
Leon and Jan Hogg
Whether it be donations to the Euless
Heritage Museum or a special performance at
the Leon Hogg Amphitheater, you will see
evidence of the Hogg family contributions to
the Euless community for many years. Leon
and Jan Hogg began their volunteer service in
Euless in the 60s when their children played
sports. Between softball and baseball they
dedicated a great deal of time as active
volunteers both on and off the field. They
worked hand in hand with the Parks Board to
create improvements to the facilities and
soon, Leon was appointed to serve on the
Parks and Leisure Services Board. From there,
he was elected to serve on the Euless City
Council and gave 18 years of public service as
the longest continuously serving Council
Member in Euless. We thank them for their
time and dedication to Euless.
Our congratulations go out to all of this year's
winners. The dedication of a volunteer's time
and energy cannot be compared and we
appreciate their love and admiration for
Euless. Thank you for the time and energy
that you spend to help make Euless great!

she has learned over the years.
About the Speaker: Gail Olmstead married her high
school sweetheart and they moved to Euless in 1976.

gardening with Euless residents.

Become a Texas
Master Composter
May 11-12, 6-9 p.m.
May 13, 8:30 a.m. - noon
Euless City Hall, 201 N. Ector Dr.
May 13, 1:00 - 5:30 p.m.
6 Stones Community Garden
209 N. Industrial Blvd.
Composting is a simple biological process that
breaks down leaves, grass clippings, wood
chips, brush, and food scraps into a dark,
crumbly, nutrient-rich, organic product. It's
nature's way of recycling organic matter and
returning it to the earth so that it may be used
again. It's great for your yard and saves
homeowner's money on water, fertilizer and
chemicals to combat insects and plant diseases.
This 14-hour course is designed to give
students an in-depth look at composting,
including its benefits and challenges.
Additionally, students will be introduced to
vermi-composting (composting with worms),
hands-on bin building, and an understanding
of the biology of composting. Participants will
receive a free composting thermometer at the
end of the class, in addition to books and
workshop materials for their personal use.
Students are expected to provide 20 hours of
volunteer time back to the community over a
12-month period to help further
environmental education. The first 30 students
completing their 20 hours of volunteer time
will receive a free backyard composting bin.
The fee for the course is $20 for residents and
$40 for non-residents and prior registration is
required. The registration deadline is May 1. A
light lunch will be provided on Saturday. To
receive Master Composter Certification, all
three days must be attended in addition to
completing 20 volunteer hours. For more
information and to register, contact Betsy Deck
at 817-685-1821.
