Allen Samuels has opened a new dealership known as Allen Samuels Direct, at the former site of Grubbs Infiniti, 1661 Airport Freeway in Euless. The new place, which had a soft opening Nov. 7 and celebrated its grand opening Tuesday night, specializes in selling used cars that have fewer than 10,000 miles and are still under factory warranty. “Every vehicle is accident-free, is covered by the original manufacturer’s factory warranty and has the Allen Samuels 30-Day Direct Promise. If you don’t like it within 30 days or 1,000 miles, just bring it back in and trade for another vehicle,” said Tom Hervey, Allen Samuels Direct’s president and general manager. For decades, Samuels’ name was on many dealerships across North Texas — including locations near Alliance Airport and in North Richland Hills. The name remained on those businesses even after he sold Allen Samuels Auto Group to a group of his managers in 2003, a move he now says he regrets. The Allen Samuels brand was bought by AutoNation last year. The new Allen Samuels Direct dealership in Euless features more than 400 vehicles by 21 manufacturers including BMW, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Jeep, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Kia, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. Outside of the Dallas-Fort Worth region, Samuels re-entered the new car business in 2012 and now owns Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram dealerships in Waco; Port Aransas; Oxford, Miss.; and Hutchison, Kan., and a Chevrolet-Buick-GMC dealership in Hearne. But he yearned to return to his roots in North Texas. “Having been raised in the Grapevine area, I have always considered Northeast Tarrant County to be home,” Samuels said in an email. “We have carved a reputation for trust and doing business the right way, and this is my opportunity to return where I first began as a dealer and continue that same legacy.” Gordon Dickson: 817-390-7796, @gdickson Read more here: http://www.star-telegram.com/news/business/article120810903.html#storylink=cpy Best Restaurant Reviews in and Around Euless, TX By William Abels January 3, 2017 Need to find a great restaurant in a flash? Hurst buying body cameras, armor for police Euless Senior Officer B. Lord with a new armored vest kit in August. The Hurst Police Department is buying similar kits for its officers. Paul Moseley pmoseley@star-telegram.com BY ELIZABETH CAMPBELL liz@star-telegram.com HURST Hurst police are getting body armor designed to protect officers from high-powered rifle bullets. The Police Department requested that the City Council approve the purchase after a sharp increase in incidents in which officers were shot with high-powered rifles, including the shooting deaths of five Dallas police officers this summer. Hurst is purchasing 100 Security Pro USA body armor kits that include armor plates, a ballistic helmet and a first aid kit. The city is also buying the Velcro panels and plate holders from Red the Uniform Tailor for approximately $4,455. Mark Schwobel of the Hurst department said police agencies are looking at best practices in light of the increased use of high-powered rifles in fatal shootings of police officers. Last summer, Euless also voted to purchase body armor to protect against high-powered rifle fire after the deaths of David Hofer and the five Dallas officers. The body armor will be issued to all police officers and to firefighters who are also peace officers, Schwobel said. “This tells the Police Department that the council is very interested in your safety,” said Mayor Richard Ward. Hurst also voted to spend $158,600 to buy 61 body cameras from WatchGuard. The cameras will help improve accountability and record-keeping, Lt. Billy Keadle said. Hurst received a grant from the Criminal Justice Division of the Governor’s Office for $78,400; the rest of the money will come from the Traffic Safety Signal Fund. Keadle said the body cameras are compatible with the in-car systems and storage from Watch Guard. Bedford is also upgrading its cameras, as the current system is obsolete. The council approved spending $252,805 to purchase the server, 22 in-car and 36 body cameras for the jail, crime and crime investigation interview rooms and redaction software from WatchGuard. The in-car and body cameras are compatible, and the company has redaction software that is not available from other camera manufacturers, Bedford police officials wrote in a memo to the City Council. The body cameras will be used by officers in patrol, traffic and repeat-victimization units, and other officers can use them as needed. The challenge was sponsored by Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Grapevine. BY ELIZABETH CAMPBELL liz@star-telegram.com EULESS When Euless firefighters and police officers took on the challenge to work on healthier lifestyles, it meant losing weight, eating more vegetables and exercising more. Their hard work paid off as the fire and police departments won the Lifestyle Improvement Challenge sponsored by Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Grapevine. And the two departments will share a $25,000 grant to purchase equipment to help keep the first responders healthy. Ken Rawlinson, public education coordinator and fire investigator, said firefighters were asked to fill out a questionnaire where they could list their goals, such as losing weight or gaining muscle, when they began the challenge. “It was exciting for us to win,” he said. “The $25,000 grand prize was a sweet jackpot.” Rawlinson said the challenge lasted for six months, from January to in June. Firefighters decided to have healthier meals during their shifts, and they planted vegetable gardens on vacant land behind the fire stations. They planted squash, green beans, onions and greens, which were served at meals when firefighters were on duty, Rawlinson said. Everyone was proud of the first harvest. We thought at first, ‘Were we going to get anything out of this?’ ” he said. “Not all of us are farmers.” The fire and police departments also brought in a dietitian to help them learn about better food choices. The first responders also wanted to get the community involved with changing their lifestyles, and they organized a fun run last summer emphasizing the importance of fitness and exercise. “We had a good time. We found that we lost over 240 pounds” collectively, Rawlinson said. The two departments also created a Facebook page to keep track of their progress. Preventing cancer As part of the challenge, the Fire Department started a cancer prevention program focused on helping firefighters avoid exposure to carcinogens such as smoke and fumes while fighting fires. Every firefighter has an extra mask to wear to keep harmful substances away from their faces, and each firefighter also has an extra set of bunker gear to keep contaminants away from their bodies. Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Morris said he is considering using some of the grant funding to buy a “cycle sauna” that will help get rid of toxins as firefighters are exposed to smoke and chemicals. “Their pores are open, and the harmful substances can get into their bodies,” he said. The cycle sauna releases infrared rays while a firefighter rides an exercise bike. The infrared rays accelerate sweating.
