HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-10-05 MARY LIB SALEH EULESS PUBLIC LIBRARY MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE LIBRARY BOARD THURSDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2017 ITEM NO. 1 CALLED TO ORDER A regular meeting of the Mary Lib Saleh Euless Public Library Board was called to order by Chairman Snitz at 7:01 p.m. on Thursday,October 5,2017,in the Conference Room of the Library, 201 N. Ector Drive. Those present included Chairman Barney Snitz,Vice Chairman Allan Gibbs, Board Member Jim Hamilton,Carol Kveck,Chris McAllister and Alternate Magen Brown. Board Members Mike McGehee and Alternate Leslie Kane were not present. STAFF MEMBERS PRESENT Sherry Knight, Library Administrator Mollie Snapp, Administrative Assistant Kelly LaBrie, Librarian Assistant VISITORS LuAnn Portugal ITEM NO. 2 APPROVED LIBRARY BOARD MINUTES Chairman Snitz asked for a motion to accept the minutes of the regular meeting held September 7, 2017, with the corrections noted. The motion was made by Vice Chairman Gibbs and seconded by Board Member Hamilton. ITEM NO. 3 WELCOMED VISITORS Chairman Snitz welcomed all visitors present. ITEM NO. 4 PRESENTED LIBRARY ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORT ❖ Staff Introduction Library Administrator, Sherry Knight, introduced to the Board Kelly LaBrie, an adult reference librarian assistant. Mrs. LaBrie then gave a brief presentation of her work at the library since 2006 and spoke of her connections made with the community through her management events and classes at the library, from teaching English as a Second Language classes, and working as a Spanish translator, to the knitting class that provides those in need in Tarrant County with caps 'and scarves. Update Ms. Knight gave an update of the HEB Reads! program that was held over the summer along with a presentation of statistical information and ways that the HEB Reads! Summer Reading Challenge assists in keeping reading levels up and prepares students for the new school year with fun programs, events, and challenges. Board Member Brown inquired about what schools had required reading for the summer and Ms. Knight informed her that HEB ISD does not require students to read, however, they do send out suggested reading lists. Ms. Knight also informed the Board that HEB Reads! had successfully applied for a$75,000 grant for a mobile outreach vehicle and that they expect it to be ready for use sometime between February and March, 2018. 4'# Classes and Events Update Ms.Knight informed the Board about a sample piece of furniture called The Sway Chair,currently being tested by the teenage patrons in The Bubble. Ms. Knight gave an overview of the upcoming classes and events: Coffee and Conversation with the Chamber of Commerce,will be held at the Library on October 6 at 8:00 a.m. Edible Book Contest, will be held on Friday, October 6. Entries will be due by 3:00 p.m. and judging will be held at 4:00 p.m. Patrons can vote all weekend. ELF Book Sale will begin on Friday, October 13 and run through Sunday, October 15. 2017 Music Series: Brave Combo will play at Texas Star Golf Course, Bird's Fort Pavilion on Friday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. Scary at the Library will be held at the Library on Tuesday, October 31 from 5:30 — 7:00 p.m. with a costume parade at 6:30 p.m. Fire Open House will be held at Fire Station#3 on Saturday, October 7 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. and the Library will be there with the ability to register new library cards. Texas Junior Angler Fishing Event will be held at Wilshire Park on Saturday, October 7 from 9 a.m. to noon and the Library will be there with a booth and toys. Halloween Trunk or Treat Celebration will be held at the Euless Family Life Center on Saturday October 28 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the Library will be there with lots of candy! ITEM NO. 5 REPORTS Library Board Chairman Chairman Snitz gave an overview of National Night Out and spoke about past year's successes of the events that Sherry listed earlier. Chairman Snitz spoke of the high number of events that the City is having and high amount of volunteers that the City has that helps make those events successful. Library Board Vice-Chairman Library Board Minutes, October S, 2017,Page 3 of 3 Vice Chairman Gibbs gave a brief overview of the fundraising goals for the new art installation and how it will contribute to the Euless Library Foundation's mission of making the Library the cultural center of Euless. Board Member McAllister inquired about seeking out corporate sponsorships and Vice Chairman Gibbs confirmed that the Foundation would be approaching local businesses, starting with the Coffee and Conversation event. Ms. Knight followed up by giving a brief explanation of the Bubble Campaign being held inside the Library for those donating smaller amounts between one and twenty dollars. Vice Chairman Gibbs complimented Alternate Brown's management of the Anne Hillerman event held on September 10 and its success. Alternate Brown agreed that the event went well and complimented the author and hopes that this was a good kickoff to bring more authors, like Anne Hillerman, to Euless. Library Board Members Board Member Kveck gave an overview of the success of the classes and events that are held in the youth department. Board Member Hamilton reminded the Board of another City event happening,Junk in the Trunk, at the Euless Family Life Senior Center Parking Lot on Saturday, October 7 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Alternate Brown expressed her enjoyment in knowing that the youth librarians hold a class at First United Methodist Church Day Care and complimented the Library's participation in outreach to the community. ITEM NO. 6 PUBLIC COMMENTS LuAnn Portugal of Euless, Texas, complimented the Library's improvements of promotional material. ITEM NO. 7 ADJOURNMENT Chairman Snitz asked for a motion to adjourn. The motion was made by Board Member Kveck and seconded by Board Member McAllister. The meeting was adjourned at 7:47 p.m. r-� - ChairmanBarn Snitz Date
