HomeMy WebLinkAboutMayor's Newsletter 7/83 w0r MAYOR ' S NEWSLETTER July 1983 Dear Citizens , The Euless City Council and Administrative Staff would appreciate having your views and input regarding future expenditures of City funds for City im- provements . Listed below are several new projects or improvements to present City services which have been suggested for your consideration . They are not in any particular order of priority from our viewpoint , and , of course , not all can be done any time soon due to limited amount of funds available . Would you please prioritize , from your standpoint , taking into consideration the fact that less than $100, 000 will be available for these projects during the 1983-84 City fiscal year . On those projects where the approximate cost is known , we have indicated them below. Citizen Description Cost of Priority of Project Project _ Warning Sirens $60, 000 _ Traffic Signals , N . Main & Harwood 20, 000 _ Traffic Signals , Central & Raider 35, 000 Traffic Signals , More Public Safety Officers ? Racquet Ball Facility ? Tennis Facility ? Fine Arts Complex ? Trash Dump Site ? CITIZEN SUGGESTIONS NEW DUMPSTER SITE FOR EULESS CITIZENS . The free dumpsters which were previously located at Midway Park and the City Hall Complex have been relocated to 1513 Westpark Way , just to the north of the City of 'Euless Service Center and Animal Shelter . There are three large dumpsters , enclosed in a fence, available for public use . Euless citizens should bring proof of same (in the form of a Euless water bill or a driver ' s license with a Euless address ) and present to the attendant on duty . Upon proper identification as a Euless citizen, persons may dump from 4pm to 8pm, Monday through Friday , on Saturday from 8am to 12 noon . No commercial dumping is allowed . BUDGET WORKSESSION. The Euless City Council and Staff will meet for a budget worksession the last weekend in July , on the 29th , 30th , and 31st . They will be working very hard to maintain a balanced budget . A MESSAGE FROM THE TRINITY RIVER AUTHORITY ABOUT YOUR WATER . What ' s New? "Chloramine , " a new disinfecting process using ammonia to chemically tie-up chlorine . But rest assured that the taste or appearance of your water will not change . Fort Worth and Dallas have been using chloramine for approximatelyl 14 years , and many other water systems in the Country have recently , or will soon modify their process in a similar fashion . Why the Change? The traditional use of chlorine as a disinfectant in treated water eliminated the major threat posed to the public health by such diseases as typhoid and chlorea . But recent studies by the Environmental Protection Agency have uncovered a link between chlorination and the formation of potential cancer causing agents known as trihalomethanes ( THM ) . In laboratory tests , THM ' s have been shown to cause cancer in rats and mice when consumed in large volumes . Only recently has laboratory equipment become sophisticated enough to detect minute quantities as parts per billion , allowing for the discovery of THM ' s in chlorinated water . You are assured of the safety of water delivered both before and after this change , and of full compliance at all times with State and Federal regulations concerning health and safety . So What ' s the Big Deal? Most people will not notice or be affected by the change , now scheduled to begin sometime this summer . However , it is important that people dependent on kidney dialysis machines use a carbon filter to prepare water used for the dialysate . A condition known as hemolytic anemia_ can occur if carbon filtration of water is not employed . Also , fish aquarium owners will want to use a carbon filtration system on tank water . In the past , allowing aquarium water to stand or use of a neutralizing agent was sufficient to disipate chlorine residuals in treated water . Chlo- ramine will not disipate . The information presented here is applicable to all water treated at the Authority ' s Tarrant County Water Supply Project water treatment plant , part of a regional water system providing water in Bedford , Colleyville , Euless , Grapevine , and North Richland Hills . Other sources of water being utilized in these cities may not be affected as described . If you have any other questions regarding the introduction of chloramine , please contact John Jadrosich , of the Trinity River Authority , at 467-4343 . EULESS BEAUTIFICATION AWARD . The City of Euless won first place in its division for the Governor ' s Community Achievement Award for the beautifi- cation of Texas cities . Euless officials received the award in Lubbock on June 17th , and it is now displayed in the lobby of the Municipal Building . The Euless Parks and Recreation Board members are to be commended for their support of the project and the hard work they contributed toward it : Billy Owens , Chairman ; Kerry McCombs , Vice Chairman ; Carolyn Park , Chairman of the Beauti- fication Committee ; Don Calhoun ; Bobby Baker ; Jack Hill ; D. R . Hawthorne ; and Ron Henson . Euless Parks Director Bob Phillips , Recreation Director Julia Wakeley , and Horticulturist Kevin Smith also contributed immensely with their knowledge , skills , and very hard work toward the successful completion of the project . Mr . George McKinney , Manager of Community Development for Texas Power and Light Company , brought the idea to Euless , through his work on the Beautify Texas Council . Mr . McKinney is a resident of Euless and is a past-president of the Beautify Texas Council . Due to his encouragement to many communities , the Beautify Texas Council presented to him their highest honor , the BLUE- BONNET AWARD . WE THANK THEM ALL VERY MUCH . . . . and know that the Citizens of Euless also appreciate the beautiful work they have done to make Euless an even more beautiful city . Sincer ly , Harold D.
