HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-12-11 Historical Preservation Committee Minutes December 11, 2017 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson, Mavy Wright, called the meeting to order at 10:01 a.m. The meeting was held at the Texas Star Golf Course, Euless. MEMBERS PRESENT Doris Brown, Al Browning, Michele Burger, Bill Byers,Joe Cannon,Weldon Cannon, Iris Elliott, Gary Fieldsend, Norma Lively, Marilyn Long, Don Martin, David Massey, Veva Lou Massey, Anniece McKanna, Suzy McCormick, Robert Nail,Gary Parker, Helen Payton, Linda Pool, Mary Lib Saleh, Faye Stinneford, Peggy Vandiver, Helen Voss,Andy Weinzapfel and Mavy Wright. VISITORS PRESENT Mayor Linda Martin, Council member Jeremy Tompkins, Patty Benoit, Alaudin Khuwaja and Gabriella Saleh. STAFF PRESENT Projects Coordinator, Ofa Faiva-Siale; Director of Parks and Community Services, Ray McDonald and Recreation Manager, Frank Ocampo. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Don Martin made a motion to approve the minutes as written and Al Browning seconded the motion. All were in favor, minutes approved. TREASURER'S REPORT The previous balance was $10,858.11.There was a deposit of$35. $10 was from the money jar and $25 was from the moneybox.There were expenditures of$122.81 by Gary Parker for shelves in the museum kitchen, leaving a current balance of$10,770.30. STATUS OF CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Docent Reports/Recruitment a. 53 people signed in for the December 11 open house on Saturday, December 9, 2017. There were approximately 650 people at Heritage Park Christmas. b. There was a tour on November 20, 2017 with about 5 people in the group. c. South Euless Elementary school toured on November 30, 2017. There were 100 people in the tour group. HPC Mtg. Page 1 of 3 d. Sign up for docents to work the January 2018 open house was passed around for volunteer sign up. 2. Acquisition—No Report 3. Facebook—No Report 4. Plaque—No Report 5. Euless Marker—No Report 6. Display Signs—No Report 7. Pub licity/Program/Speakers— No Report 8. Historical Albums—Marilyn Long and Doris Brown will schedule a meeting with Mike Brown to show him the Fallen Officer photo album. They will wait until the New Year to start working on a new album. 9. Heritage Park—Members indicated their appreciation of the Tongan Methodist youth group who cleaned out the McCormick Barn on Saturday, November 18. The group was a great help and the barn was opened to the public during Heritage Park Christmas. 10. Photography/Oral History—No Report 11. Artifact Recovery—No report 12, Historical Tree Program—No report CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 1. Will work on getting a description for the Highway 183 overpass fence section installed on the property. 2. Inquired about the inventory status. Staff reported that Barbara Collier is working on the inventory. Staff will contact her regarding the status of the project. 3. Spoke at a Mid-Cities Geological Society event recently. The Society seemed surprised at amount of projects that the historical committee works on. Weldon Cannon is a lifetime member of the Mid-cities Genealogical Society. He has strongly encouraged the Society to not only focus on their own family's genealogy but to also include the location of where their families are from as an important component of the study. COMMITTEE REPORT 1. Gary Parker discussed the idea of installing Plexiglas in front of the mural for protection from damage. After various ideas of things to do to protect the mural from damage,the committee decide to acquire stanchions to rope off the area immediately around the mural. 2. Andy Weinzapfel made an announcement on the open mic during Heritage Park Christmas letting everyone know that the Museum was open for free tours. About 30 people came into the facility as a result of the announcement. The committee would like more signage letting people know that the Fuller House and the Museum are open for free tours in the future. They will also make periodic announcements on the mic. HPC Mtg. Page 2 of 3 3. Gary Fieldsend thanked the City for all their support over the years. He noted that other museum volunteers often spend their time fundraising for monies to run their museum and taking care of everything pertaining to their museum themselves. Euless is different in that the City supports the committee in their needs. 4. Weldon Cannon sent Mavy Wright an email last month regarding updating historical descriptions and information on various Texas historical websites and published information in circulation. Many Euless historical write-ups are outdated and no longer accurate. The Mayor and Betsy Deck will work on updating the information. 5. Weldon Cannon also reported on an article found in D-Magazine.This is a Dallas magazine and a young girl is featured in the magazine who used to live in Bedford.The teen attended Trinity High School and volunteered at the Euless animal shelter.The title of the article is "Ugly Duckling". The teenager is now a famous and very successful model with a successful career. ADJOURNMENT Faye Stinneford made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved.
