Weldon Cannon was asked to provide a presentation and he gave one about two women who were "influential" in his life: "Aunt Mollie Daniel" and Pat Riddle. Mr. Cannon and Pat Riddle knew each other as far back as 1946.Years ago, Ms. Riddle, returned to college and received her Bachelor's degree at age 54 from the University of Texas at Arlington. She went on to become a writer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram until about age 80. Back in October 1987, Ms. Riddle wrote an article featuring Weldon Cannon. The article pictured Mr. Cannon with a homemade tombstone that his grandfather,Arch Cannon, made years before. Arch Cannon made the tombstone with the name and photograph of a political rival who lost her bid for reelection as Texas Governor. Her name was Miriam "Ma" Ferguson.Arch Cannon kept the tombstone in his backyard and proudly showed visitors where they"buried" "Ma" Ferguson. After a while, the "Ma" Ferguson joke wore off and Arch Cannon's widow, Idella Cannon, was bothered about her"Aunt Mollie Daniel" having been buried at Calloway Cemetery without a marker for some 15-20 years at that point in time. Idella Cannon took the old tombstone and had a thinner veneer glued atop the original marker with "Aunt Mollie's" information and placed it at her grave. In 1984,Weldon Cannon found the veneer and concrete marker deteriorating and falling apart, so he made another marker out of concrete and placed it on "Aunt Mollie's" grave. For many years, Weldon Cannon searched to find the exact relations was with "Aunt Mollie" since no one alive seemed to know how they were related. In 2006, Mr. Cannon finally, positively identified "Aunt Mollie" while studying records in the Coffee County Court House, in Manchester, TN. "Aunt Mollie"was indeed, Idella Cannon's HPC Mtg. Page 3 of 4 aunt, sister to her mother, Sarah Jane Redden Whitener. "Aunt Mollie"was born Mary Ann Redden in 1849 in Coffee County and died in Tarrant County, Texas, in 1914. Through Mr. Cannon's research, he found that the reason it was difficult to trace "Aunt Mollie's" connection to the family was that she was widowed and remarried three times to a Mr.West, a Mr. Sutherland and finally to a Mr. Daniel. Over the years, Mr. Cannon always felt a kinship and the responsibility of caretaker of"Aunt Mollie's" grave and tombstone so in 2008, he bought a professionally made marker and put her full name on it; Mary Ann Redden West Sutherland Daniel, a.k.a. "Aunt Mollie". Pat Riddle passed away this past Friday, January 5, 2018. She will be buried today at 3 p.m.,the day of the Historical committee's meeting and Mr. Cannon thought it fitting that on this day, he would honor two women of history, who were influential in his life. The members enjoyed the presentation immensely. ADJOURNMENT Faye Stinneford made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Helen Voss seconded the motion. Motion approved. The meeting adjourned at 10:58 a.m. Respectfully submitted by: Ofa Faiva-Siale City of Euless Parks and Community Services HPC Mtg. Page 4 of 4
