For a few quarters, customers can wash and dry their cars at a Euless car wash.
When they're done, they can grab some garden-fresh produce for free.
Joe Mapes runs Joan's Self Services Car Wash on North Main Street. He decided
this year to plant a garden in front of the washing bays.
"We got peppers -- five or six kinds of peppers, even including jalapenos," he
said. "You'll notice we even put hand holes in the cages since we made them
ourselves, and they're identified so a person can reach in and come get a tomato."
Mapes said the garden isn't just for customers, but for anyone needing a few
veggies.
— f
"Nobody's abused it in any way, shape, matter or form, and it's created a lot of
nice conversations, conversations with customers," he said.
Mapes remembers having a "victory garden" while growing up. Victory gardens
started during World War II, when the government encouraged people to grow
their own food during the war. But Mapes planted his garden for a different
reason.
"Primarily, it originated as a result of the economic conditions that exist today,"
he said.

Thes en ardipacked with tomatoes different kinds of
g p peppers, eggplants,
squash, cantaloupe and cucumbers. He even planted some dill, basil, curry and
mint for herb lovers.
"I'm amazed that you can come pick it," Jerry Nava said. "It's pretty amazing."
Nava came by to wash the family van with his dad and ended up leaving with
some peppers to mix in with their dinner.
"I never knew you could just pick it for yourself," he said. "I think me and my dad
are going to be coming here a lot."
Erich Baine, who just moved to Euless from Idaho, said he'll be stopping by to
wash his truck more -- and pick some vine-ripe tomatoes. The garden has even
inspired the homemade salsa-maker to pitch in. "I think it's awesome," he said. '
"I think it's wonderful. It's not often that you see people doing this kind of stuff,
a giving back to the community. I'd be happy to come here and -- when I come to
wash my car, when it's drying out -- weed, maybe do some stuff, plant. I think it's
fun." Joan's Self Services Car Wash is located at 504 N. Main St. in Euless. '
