The chamber on Thursday said that it has passed a resolution opposing any change or repeal of the amendment, a 1979 federal law that limits flights from city-owned Dallas Love Field to short-haul trips to seven states. Last year. Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV).which flies out of Love Field, forged a battle to have the amendment repealed. The Irving-Las Colinas chamber said a change to the federal law would negatively impact Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport's $14 billion in economic activity and 268,000 full-time jobs in North Texas. "D/FW Intemational Airport is partially located within the city limits of Irving and as the airport's local chamber, our board of directors felt that it is important for us to support D/FW Airport's continued growth and success," said Chris Wallace, president and CEO of the chamber. "Instead of seeking a divisive approach, all efforts in the region should focus on uniting regional leadership to seek to bring new and expanded air service to D/FW Airport, the region's economic engine." The chamber joins the North Texas Commission,Irving and Euless city councils, six minority chambers of commerce and U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson,D-Dallas, in opposing a repeal of the amendment. Fort Worth-based American Airlines Inc., the fortress carrier at D/FW Airport, also opposes changes to Wright and said it will sue to gain access to Love Field if the amendment is repealed. D/FW Airport would rather the low-cost carrier shift some of its operations from Love Field to D/FW, and has repeatedly offered Southwest a year's free rent at D/FW and more than$22 million in incentives to do so. Meanwhile, the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson, R-Plano, Washington, D.C.- based advocacy group Air Travelers Association support a repeal of the amendment. ' City officials have pulled the plug on the popular springtime Arbor Daze festival with high-profile entertainment. Replacing it will be a smaller community event that focuses on tree giveaways and the environment. Rising costs have prompted the City Council to cancel the free event that cost$900,000 to produce every year. "I think it will be a shock because so many people love Arbor Daze,"city spokeswoman Betsy Boyett said. Arbor Daze, the largest nonalcoholic event in Texas, attracted more than 250,000 visitors annually, city officials said. The northeast Tarrant County festival, which marked its 17th year in April, featured entertainment, arts and crafts exhibits and tree giveaways around Arbor Day. "I don't ever see the city having an event the size of Arbor Daze," said Ray McDonald, director of parks and community services. Officials said the city lost$25,000 on this year's event and about$250,000 in 2004 because of inclement weather that led to cancellation of part of the event. I Mr. McDonald said reducing the entertainment expense—the largest festival cost—could have been an option to salvage the event. This year's festival featured the Doobie Brothers, the Grass Roots, Kool and the Gang, and Little River Band. "I think the thing is that we don't want the public to perceive that we're trying to put anything less than the quality product out there for them," Mr. McDonald said. City officials are planning a community-oriented event that focuses on promoting trees in the environment, Ms. Boyett said. 1 i rISTRIBUTED TO: PAGE l OF I JVIAYOR CITYCOUNCIL CITYATTORNEY CRIIYI HENNIG MCKAIVIIE RIDGWAY(2) BOYETT IOUNG MCDONALD COLLINS WILHITE GETCHELL LIBRARYAD:KIN LIBRARYREF ANLKAL CNTR DATE DISTRIBUTED I /0S DATE OF ARTICLE -tO S NEWSPAPER_ FWST NORTHEAST TARRANT AREA BRIEFS Eastbound Texas 183 ' shut down by wreck EULESS-All three eastbound lanes in the 1000 block of Texas 183 were shut down for about 45 t minutes Tuesday afternoon because of an accident, police said.
