111,004: "BEE" COMMITTEE
JANUARY 21, 1991
CALL TO ORDER: The regular meeting of the BEE Committee was called to
order at 7:00 p.m. at the City Hall in the Council Conference Room by
Chairperson Dee Heilman.
ATTENDEES: Dee Heilman Debra Maxwell
Jay Heilman Marge Crow
Alice Ernest Marland Ernest
Helen Lightbody Irene Rosecrans
Rick Herold
Marge Crow made a motion and it was seconded that the minutes for the
December meeting be approved as read. Marge Crow made the suggestion
that the minutes of the meetings and the agendas for the upcoming
meetings not be mailed out until just a few days prior to the meetings
so they could serve as a reminder for the next meeting date.
TREASURER'S REPORT: Marge Crow gave the treasurer's report in the
absence of Louise Webb. There was an expenditure of $78.00 to Ed
Harrison and the balance as of January was $6,115.
\.... VOLUNTEER HOURS: Dee Heilman requested that members turn in volunteer
hours to Irene who reported that as of this meeting there is a total
volunteer hours reported of 1,317 hours from January of last year thru
January 21, 1991.
OLD BUSINESS: The Christmas Tree recycling project was successful
with 3,500 trees, 102 volunteer hours, 6,620 cubic ft. of mulch. Rick
Herold, Dee and Jay Heilman said that much thanks goes to TU Electric,
City Garbage and other volunteers who helped in this project.
Trash Cans: Dee Heilman reported that sometime in February she should
learn of the delivery date for the trash cans that were ordered with
the BEE Logo.
Jay Heilman reported that the City of Grapevine will start curbside
recycling in March. Laidlaw Co. will be the company picking up the
recyclables and there will be a charge to residents of $1.87 per
month.
Irene Rosecrans gave a progress report from the Recycling Committee.
The committee has agreed that joining forces with the BEE Committee
and Rick Herold's plan for a "Don't Bag It" program is the best place
for them to start. The Committee is working with City Garbage to see
if the "Don't Bag It" Program would reduce enough waste and replacing
one day a week garbage pickup to a recyclables pickup would be
'%......- workable enough for both the city and the garbage company to have a
Recycling program that would not add charges to the monthly fee now

paid for garbage service. Rick Herold's "Don't Bag It' program will
begin in March.
Marland Ernest suggested that recyclable bags be used and said he
planned on bringing a bag manufacturer to the next meeting to discuss
these with the committee. Helen Lightbody suggested that the
Recycling Committee check out the volunteer programs that the local
grocery stores are promoting.
CHRISTMAS DISPLAYS: The 1990 Christmas displays were well received
and the committee members pleased with the growing display. Marge
Crow said that some need to be made more stable for the 1991 season
and there was discussion on pieces that could be added.
BEAUTIFICATION AWARDS FOR SCHOOLS: Althea Stak's report was given by
way of letter in her absence from the meeting. Bear Creek elementary
will be spending $5,400 on a landscaping project which should be
completed by May 26th and she suggests that the committee recognize
this project. Althea has contacted Scout groups who will be more
involved in programs, such as BEE Committee's clean-up program in the
Spring. Helen Lightbody said KTB has a new program for junior high
schools and suggests that Althea contact KTB for additional
information.
Dee Heilman will give Althea on a poster contest that Grapevine
schools are having in two age groups that will aid the new recycling
program that Grapevine has.
NEW BUSINESS: The statewide clean-up date is June 1 for this year.
There will be no Sparkle Month this year and Marge Crow suggested that
we must have a clean-up prior to April 30 for the GCAA. Jay suggested
that dumpsters be set up and each neighborhood bring their throw-away
items on scheduled dates. Marland Ernest seconded a motion by Irene
that a letter be written to City Council expressing our concern over
the cancelation of Sparkle Month. Helen will write the letter.
March 9 is scheduled as BEE Committees next clean-up which we will
call "Euless Clean Sweep" . Bags and the sources for them were
discussed. Texas Highway Department will be contacted by Jay.
Debra Maxwell gave a report on the YARD OF THE MONTH, and she
suggested that new reports should be designed, and will take her plans
to Dee or Betty to be input on the computer. Debra will contact
Raydeanne in the Water Department to see if Yard-of-the-month could be
put on the water bill so the residents would be aware of the program.
Marland Ernest gave a report on BEAUTIFICATION and suggested 3
categories: Planting of Trees
Beautification
Economic Development
Marland is working on each of these areas and has contact with people
working on programs in each category. Marland has a Business

Helen Lightbody gave a report on the Leisure Faire booth and said that
the BEE booth should not duplicate Park and Recreation offerings.

hand-outs for the fair. She said she would order Bees and balloons
and suggested that we update our BEE brochure.
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
