T-A41 IP .,..., * ...,-, ftAr eW ix#111 6' <fs \) %wick All. 4100 REGULAR MEETING 1 U T ‘ 111,004: "BEE" COMMITTEE JANUARY 21, 1991 CALL TO ORDER: The regular meeting of the BEE Committee was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at the City Hall in the Council Conference Room by Chairperson Dee Heilman. ATTENDEES: Dee Heilman Debra Maxwell Jay Heilman Marge Crow Alice Ernest Marland Ernest Helen Lightbody Irene Rosecrans Rick Herold Marge Crow made a motion and it was seconded that the minutes for the December meeting be approved as read. Marge Crow made the suggestion that the minutes of the meetings and the agendas for the upcoming meetings not be mailed out until just a few days prior to the meetings so they could serve as a reminder for the next meeting date. TREASURER'S REPORT: Marge Crow gave the treasurer's report in the absence of Louise Webb. There was an expenditure of $78.00 to Ed Harrison and the balance as of January was $6,115. \.... VOLUNTEER HOURS: Dee Heilman requested that members turn in volunteer hours to Irene who reported that as of this meeting there is a total volunteer hours reported of 1,317 hours from January of last year thru January 21, 1991. OLD BUSINESS: The Christmas Tree recycling project was successful with 3,500 trees, 102 volunteer hours, 6,620 cubic ft. of mulch. Rick Herold, Dee and Jay Heilman said that much thanks goes to TU Electric, City Garbage and other volunteers who helped in this project. Trash Cans: Dee Heilman reported that sometime in February she should learn of the delivery date for the trash cans that were ordered with the BEE Logo. Jay Heilman reported that the City of Grapevine will start curbside recycling in March. Laidlaw Co. will be the company picking up the recyclables and there will be a charge to residents of $1.87 per month. Irene Rosecrans gave a progress report from the Recycling Committee. The committee has agreed that joining forces with the BEE Committee and Rick Herold's plan for a "Don't Bag It" program is the best place for them to start. The Committee is working with City Garbage to see if the "Don't Bag It" Program would reduce enough waste and replacing one day a week garbage pickup to a recyclables pickup would be '%......- workable enough for both the city and the garbage company to have a Recycling program that would not add charges to the monthly fee now atm "We're Building a Beautiful Tomorrow" -6 paid for garbage service. Rick Herold's "Don't Bag It' program will begin in March. Marland Ernest suggested that recyclable bags be used and said he planned on bringing a bag manufacturer to the next meeting to discuss these with the committee. Helen Lightbody suggested that the Recycling Committee check out the volunteer programs that the local grocery stores are promoting. CHRISTMAS DISPLAYS: The 1990 Christmas displays were well received and the committee members pleased with the growing display. Marge Crow said that some need to be made more stable for the 1991 season and there was discussion on pieces that could be added. BEAUTIFICATION AWARDS FOR SCHOOLS: Althea Stak's report was given by way of letter in her absence from the meeting. Bear Creek elementary will be spending $5,400 on a landscaping project which should be completed by May 26th and she suggests that the committee recognize this project. Althea has contacted Scout groups who will be more involved in programs, such as BEE Committee's clean-up program in the Spring. Helen Lightbody said KTB has a new program for junior high schools and suggests that Althea contact KTB for additional information. Dee Heilman will give Althea on a poster contest that Grapevine schools are having in two age groups that will aid the new recycling program that Grapevine has. NEW BUSINESS: The statewide clean-up date is June 1 for this year. There will be no Sparkle Month this year and Marge Crow suggested that we must have a clean-up prior to April 30 for the GCAA. Jay suggested that dumpsters be set up and each neighborhood bring their throw-away items on scheduled dates. Marland Ernest seconded a motion by Irene that a letter be written to City Council expressing our concern over the cancelation of Sparkle Month. Helen will write the letter. March 9 is scheduled as BEE Committees next clean-up which we will call "Euless Clean Sweep" . Bags and the sources for them were discussed. Texas Highway Department will be contacted by Jay. Debra Maxwell gave a report on the YARD OF THE MONTH, and she suggested that new reports should be designed, and will take her plans to Dee or Betty to be input on the computer. Debra will contact Raydeanne in the Water Department to see if Yard-of-the-month could be put on the water bill so the residents would be aware of the program. Marland Ernest gave a report on BEAUTIFICATION and suggested 3 categories: Planting of Trees Beautification Economic Development Marland is working on each of these areas and has contact with people working on programs in each category. Marland has a Business --\ Beautification Sign in his car trunk awaiting the next presentation. Helen Lightbody gave a report on the Leisure Faire booth and said that the BEE booth should not duplicate Park and Recreation offerings. Helen said that we should come up with quality and not quantity in hand-outs for the fair. She said she would order Bees and balloons and suggested that we update our BEE brochure. The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
