CALL TO ORDER: The regular monthly meeting of the BEE Committee was called to order at 7:00 P.M. at the City Hall in the Council Conference Room by Chairperson Dee Heilman. ATTENDEES: Dee Heilman Irene Rosecrans Helen Lightbody Louise Webb Marge Crow Marland Ernest Jay Heilman Rick Herold The minutes of the November meeting were approved as read. TREASURERS REPORT: Louis Webb, Treasurer, reported a balance of $6,591.13, to be confirmed when print out is received from City Finance Department. Checks were received for the Recycle Center and amounts will •be reported at the next meeting. The expenditures for Christmas decorations, the barbecue, and awards were reported by Dee at the November special meeting. The above balance reflects the $5,000.00 granted from the City. VOLUNTEER HOURS: Members were asked to turn all volunteer hours into Irene Rosecrans. The total volunteer hours reported for January, 1990 through the November meeting is now at 749 hours. OLD BUSINESS: There was the discussion about keeping the recycling money separate from the City grant funds. Marge Crow mentioned that the grant funds be used for specific committee projects for the city and that the recycle funds received be used for special projects of beautification. The trash cans have been ordered and will be placed when they arrive. COMMITTEE REPORTS ARE AS FOLLOWS: RECYCLING: Marge Crow reported that she will have an update on monies received from the Recycle Center for the next meeting. MEDIA/PUBLICITY: Irene Rosecrans reported giving information to Beth Earle and that she had submitted information to the newspapers, but that the papers do no always print what is submitted. Irene said she would try to work up some kind of historical report of the BEE Committee to see if that could be published. EDUCATION: Althea Staks was absent from the meeting so no report on education projects were submitted. \ft. Ute66 'We're Building a Beautiful Tomorrow" GOV. ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS PROGRAM: Marge Crow, Chairperson of this group handed out copies of Governor's Achievement Awards entry forms and suggested that each member be assigned a specific duty. Dee Heilman said she would put the program on a Data Base to make the reporting of the committee's work more efficient. The groups assignments are as follows: Introduction: Alice Ernest Clean Up: Rick Herold Public Awareness: Irene Rosecrans, Rick Herold, Helen Lightbody Education(Schools) : Althea Staks Law Enforcement: Jay Heilman Recycling: Marge Crow Beautification: Marland Ernest Summary: Dee Heilman Rick Herold told the group that he has a little talking robot that will help in the Education and Awareness when presented at the schools. Marland, Rick and Marge mentioned that the Leisure Faire would help in bringing up are total scores for the Governor's award. Louis Webb will help in doing the scrapbook. Dee mentioned that the trash cans that will be placed around the city the BEE Committee logo will be placed on it and she will pick up the logo from Shields who used it for the squeeze bottles that were given away at the annual awards banquet. They should be received about the 1st of March. Dee has requested that a letter of thanks go to Rick and his park crew for painting the frames for the Twelve Days of Christmas. Rick reported going on a trip to Marshall, Texas and that the BEE committee has a good potential for using more lights and displays in future years. Rick also reported that the City has put up entry to the city signs and that there will be five of these entry signs placed around the city. NEW BUSINESS: The committee agreed that for the holiday season next year it would be a good idea to present an award for the best display and/or lights similar to the Yard of the Month award. It was suggested that next year the committee try to go as a group to Marshall to view the Christmas lights so that they could get more ideas for lighting for the city. He stated that Marshall makes a lot of revenue during this time of year with visitors and there is that possibility for Euless. Dee suggested perhaps a manger scene and camels outlined with white lights. Rick suggested having a special gala for the citizens perhaps with booths with refreshments so that they would feel a part of the holiday lights, and the possibility of having it when the complex tree is lighted. . Marge Crow suggested the committee use some of the recycle money for special projects so that the citizens could feel participation as it has been their recyclables that has been bringing added funds to the committee. There was more discussion on the Beautification Awards for the schools and that maybe a sign would placed. Helen said that KTB has added secondary schools in the Keep Texas Beautiful awards. She also stated that we should work better with the media to get the coverage that is necessary for the report for the Governor's Achievement Awards Entry. Marge said that it had been mentioned that perhaps the city was considering renaming one of the city parks in memory of "Blackie" Sustaire and it was suggested that the committee could sanction it, if the city decided they wanted to do it. Marge said there was no new information on BEE recycling, but that the committee has received new funds and has over $5,000.00. There was requests for media coverage and Irene said she was doing everything she knew to get more news printed, and perhaps everyone on the committee would call BETH and see what the possibilities could be. Beth told Irene that she would be attending some seminars that should help her in gaining knowledge that could help in presentation to the news media and while she does present to the newspapers a lot of information about the BEE committee it's up to them to decide if they have the room to run it. Jay reported that City Garbage and TU Electric will participate in the Christmas Tree mulching program, and Rick will be placing signs up so the citizens will know where and when the mulching will take place. Helen brought refreshments. Rick and Irene gave reports on the Hwy 10 projects and the BEE committee will work with the park department on the beautification of the median as soon as Rick lets us know it is ready. Bobby Baker is putting a lot of efforts into the Hwy 10 business group and the committee will work also with him when it comes time for our group to work on the beautification phase of the highway. Marge reported on the "sustained" award that is available and Marge said that she would get more information on it and she also told about an excellence award for the top "pace-setter" and that all cities would be eligible for this award. She also told of cities that receive this award are those that belong to the Keep America Beautiful committee. Marge mentioned that there are requirements for joining this committee and that the city must have an employee that works on this project. Marland and Marge will get more information and Jay said he would try to get information on the employee and that the employee is paid through a grant. There was a lot of discussion on recycling and the BEE Committee will continue to do their part. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40
