i'j MINUTES OF MEETING HELD NOVEMBER 20 , 1989 * K *
Meeting was held at the Ruth Millicen Center to e1 Jv
0Ilr
e1,: include a workshop on the Christmas Project. U T
ATTENDEES: Marge Crow, George McKinney, Bruce Simpson,
Marland Ernest, Dee & Jay Heilman, Helen &
Larry Lightbody
The meeting was called to order by Marge Crow. The minutes of the previous
meeting will be approved at our January meeting. In the absence of our Treasurer,
Marge Crow reported that we now have a balance of $17.44.
Recycling funds received in October. were $314.30 bringing a total for the past
seven months to $2250.17. Some discussion was held on how the recyclables are
graded, i.e. contain water, types of paper etc.
Bruce Simpson brought some newspaper articles on landscaping problems. Marge
presented an article from the Ft . Worth Star Telegram which stated that "Degradable
plastics are called no solution to our landfill problems. " Even though degradable
plastics are used in diapers and other plastic things - they degrade when they are
exposed to the sun but do not decompose in the landfills. There is some concern
that people will get the wrong idea by the term "DEGRADABLE" and are not going
to care about the problem because they think that the problem is whipped.
IT ISN't.
Flyers for the Xmas Tree Recycling program were discussed and Marge Crow and
Helen Lightbody will provide the flyers and print them. Marland Ernest will
distribute them to the Vendors in the City who in turn will hand them out when
trees are sold. Helen Lightbody reported that arrangements had been made for
this project to appear on the City water bill this month. The official date for
the recycling will be January 6 but the trees can be dropped off at the designated
location anytime after Xmas. Marland is coordinating the project with our
Parks Department. The Lion' s Club members have indicated that they would cooperate
with us in this project. Dee Heilman volunteered to make the posters.
George McKinney reported that we have approximately seven to nine more trees to
be placed on campuses. They had not been planted earlier because it was getting
beyond the planting season, but will be planted in January. In relation to the
tree program, George gave some background on how the project was handled.
Initially the program called for each year, every school that really participated
in the Waste-in-Place program - actually make a concerted effort with it - would
be given a sizable tree to be planted at a location of their choice on their
campus with dedication being made by the "BEE" Committee as a part of the NEB
PROGRAM from the educational aspect. They in turn would see that the planting
program centered around some special time such as Arbor Day or "How to take care
of a tree" or "Why plant trees in a metropolitan area". When the tree is planted
there would be a representative group `'rom the school to see the planting. The
program was well supported. However, George feels that the tree program is getting
to be a monumental project with two of the districts being out of the City of
Euless. The procedure necessary to prepare the hole to be dug for the tree, have
a schedule for planting set and the ceremony planned is time demanding. It worked
well in the City of Euless with the cooperation of our Parks Dept. , however when
the trees are planted en campuses in Hurst or Bedford there is difficulty in getting

equipment for digging t' e hole and arranging for the schedule and presentation
becomes more complicated. George therefore recommended to the Committee that we
seriously consider doing away with the planting of the trees on the campuses.
Discussion was held regarding the recommendation and it was determined to table the
item until our next meeting to allow for more committee members to be present and
further consideration be given to this project.
George reported that the teaching kite which were assembled to coincide with the
W-I-P program have been completed. There are sufficient kits for use by the
kindergarten level . Greenville has a pattern for the 1st grade level and it will
be checked out and a pattern received. Beyond this level, patterns may be
provided for others, but they will need to assemble the kits.
Marge commended George on the hard work he and Bob Phillips have done on the
tree planting project and said that many members are not aware of the time and
effort involved in this project. She also mentioned that the Committee appreciated
all the work required to prepare the kits for use in the W-I-P program.
The HURST-EULESS-BEDFORD School Board is honoring the "BEE" Committee and
especially George McKinney on Tuesday November 21 for the work he has done to
get the W-I-P into the school curriculum.
Bob Perry reported on the moving of the Recycling Center to Raider Drive and
suggested that most questions should be directed to Ray Dooley at the City Garbage
Center.
The meeting was adjourned early to allow time to work on the Xmas project.
Another workshop was called for the following Thursday, November 23. Vercile
Jordan is to be commended on the time and talent she devoted to this project.
