She mentioned that the Committee was pleased to have Carolyn Park attend. Minutes of a August 11th meeting were discussed. Bruce Simpson mentioned that the 3-month extension provided by Waste Management, Inc. for pickup and delivery of our materials to be recycled, was omitted in the minutes. The minutes were approved with the correction noted. Marge commented that the Corresponding Secretary was out of town and that correspondence this month included: (1) a "Thank you" note from Willie Mae McCormick for being chosen as a recipient of the "Yard of the Month" award and she enjoyed the photo of the yard, (2) a letter from Linda Tidwell, Asst. City Manager, Haltom City addressed to George McKinney congratulating him on winning the Super "O.P." Schnabel Award, and a letter from Catherine Robinson, Chairman of the North Richland Hills Beautification Commission addressed to Bob Phillips thanking him for his assistance to Mrs. Scoma in acquiring trees and plants they needed. A call was also received from a gentleman in Kaufman, Texas who contacted KTB, Inc. and was referred to "BEE" Euless. He discussed mostly our recycling program. TREASURER'S REPORT: Barbecue has been ordered for some 75 people. Our current balance is $749.44. Discussion was held on moneys spent throughout this year. Patsy requested that we label and identify all bills as to their activity use so that we could maintain a better record of the cost of different activities. The printout of the Recycling Center account should be available within a month. Jay Heilman mentioned that we also have a rebate check of $542 from the "ARC" program. VOLUNTER HOURS: Were reported and it was encouraged that these be submitted monthly. OLD BUSINESS: Berm Maintenance: Discussion was held regarding this project. Marge requested suggestions from the Committee regarding ways to supplement this program. NEW BUSINESS: Jay Heilman showed the Committee the Certificate they received during our last KTB, Inc. Awards Meeting. It was attractively framed and will be placed within the City Office complex. He mentioned that the summer program of handicapped people who worked under the tutorage of a coach was very effective. They spent one-half day for six weeks at the Ruth Millicen Center using hand tools ( no power tools). The finished product was excellent. He presented newspaper clippings of this project and suggested that it be entered in Youth Projects entry for the coming year. He also submitted newspaper clippings of a streetscape in Colorado and recycling efforts in Dallas. He presented to the Committee a letter sent out to volunteers from the Austin Xmas Tree Recycling Program. He suggested that we appoint a sub-committee to handle this project since it will require considerable effort and concentration in a short time- frame. Much discussion was held on this project. The BEE Committee will need to provide the impetus and planning groups. ro (dello "We're Building a Beautiful Tomorrow" Page 2 Meeting Held September 18, 1989- BEE Committee Jay inquired of the Committee their feeling on the need for a "Grab-It Tool". This •- is a sanitary pick up tool that provides for ease in picking up trash without the need to bend down and physically handle the trash. These tools would be beneficial to have available for those who have some difficulty or handicap and it was felt that more participation in our "trash-offs" would occur if these tools were made available. AWARDS BARBECUE: Jay presented several lists to the Committee for their review. This included a list of invitees, list of volunteers, agenda for the program and a suggested copy of the Letter of Appreciation which was to be done on parchment paper and framed for the volunteers. These lists were reviewed and returned to Jay. Dee Heilman was designated as photographer for this program. She suggested that we get film developed at other areas besides BUCKEYE because their prices were high. Bob Phillips will arrange some slides of "BEE" activities to be presented at the barbecue. RECYCLING: Bob Perry reported on the recycling program. He mentioned the need for a wheelbarrow which he was authorized to purchase. He said there was some question as to whether white computer paper was acceptable. He was able to determine that it was acceptable along with the green bar paper for computer paper rates. A suggestion was made that we reprint the Recycling Brochure to update hours and make the direction on the map more clear for those trying to locate the Center for the first time. August recycling receipts show two checks ($196.40 and $104.20). This is good but it will not pay Tim's wages at the Center. Different areas were suggested to promote this program. We need to expand to hospitals, airport businesses, beauty shops and "1 businesses. Our recycle signs need to be larger. Hours of operation have changed to be same as those of the Service Center. George McKinney commented that three kits had been completed for presentation to schools for use during the W-I-P Program. He originally thou ht that 9 kits would be necessary but they decided that with good scheduling - six kits should be sufficient. A-1 Certificates for schools have been framed and are ready for presentation at formal programs at the school. Seven more trees need to be placed in the ground and dates will be coordinated with the availability of a tree-hole digger. Marland Ernest mentioned that some action is being taken to minimize the signs which violate Ordinance 384. "Garage Sale" signs will have to be properly permitted. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
