The meeting was called to order by Marge Crow, Chairman. She asked that we deviate
from the typed agenda to allow Alice & Marland Ernest give their reports since they
needed to leave early.
Alice reported that she had completed the entry for the Governor's Achievement Awards
and it was carried to Austin by Carolyn Park. The Youth Awards entry was also sub-
mitted prior to the deadline. She encouraged committee members that we keep better k
records of our volunteer hours. There are many hours that are not being reported.
Volunteers need to arrange their recording of hours so that our reporting is more
accurate.
Marland reported that the project for our Xmas display requires some planning and
programming so that it will be coordinated and completed in time. The "BEE" will
create signs and display and actually do the painting. The City will take care of
lighting and storage. Plywood and paint materials will be paid for from the "BEE"
funds. Considerable discussion was held on how the project would be handled. It
was determined that Marland would get the transparencies that could be used on an
overhead. Marland and Jay Heilman would arrange for plywood and materials so that
they will be basically the same. Bob Perry will research help on the artwork.
The minutes of the last meeting were approved with the correction of Tim's age
being 19 instead of 17.
Volunteer hours were turned into Dotty McKinney.
Corresponding Secretary, Helen Lightbody reported she wrote eight letters to those
who contributed and participated in the "hand-outs" we were able to provide at the
"How to Grow Show". (The group included Waste Management, Alcoa Aluminum, Bob Phillips
Plant Shed, etc.)
Letters were also sent to the Mayors, City Managers and Assistant City Managers of
Cities of Hurst and Bedford to encourage and invite their participation in the
Mid Cities Recycling Center Project.
Carman Crow reported that Steve Norwood, Director of' Economic Development will
handle the :invitations for the "Berm" tiectielltter 9. Relative to the berm
Tim Hightshoe reported that some 12 trees were blown over and needed to be lifted
and supported. Weeding has been done with about 63 bags of weeds taken from the
area. He is currently working on cleaning and pruning the hawthorre bushes.
Chairman Crow mentioned that she has turned in a donation to help sponsor the 10K
program this year in the amount of $25. She received a letter from HEB Director
of Education which was written to Harold Samuels, Mayor showing appreciation for
the work done by Lynn Shackelford, Jay Heilman and Marge Crow in providing
employment for the handicapped.

The June KTB, Inc. annual meeting will be hald in Houston this year. George
McKinney moved that we have the "BEE" pay registration fees for all attending
members and they be reimbursed for hotel charges of two nights. He included the
stipulation that if you indicated you are going and do not show - you will have to
refund the "BEE" for the moneys spent. The motion was approved.
George McKinney mentioned that for next year's projects, he intends to make
another video in addition to the one he made this year and they propose to
continue awarding of the trees. They awarded 9 last year and hope to award 17
this year.
Jay Heilman reported on the seminar he and Ron Hensen attended in Austin on
Trees. He is arranging to have a speaker from Austin make a presentation to
the P & R Board and would like to include the "BEE" committee at this meeting.
Another presentation will be given to City Staff the next day. They had a lot of
good information on ordinances - such as, when land is presented for platting
and development to Planning and Zoning, - we should also earmark and arrange for
replacement of trees that have been removed. They reported on their Xmas tree
mulching project. Trees were collected and mulched. They did not keep the mulch
for compost but it was returned to people to use in their yards.
He reported that Rick Herold is bagging the trash from the Highway #10 trash cans
and other areas and it is being delivered to the Recycling Center where Tim, our
attendant will go through them and remove the recyclable materials before placing
them in the dumpster.
Jay suggested that we use the special needs students this summer to work on
making a picnic area at Westpark since they will be attending classes in the
morning in that area and the location would be convenient. Several areas such as
Bear Creek, Milliken Center and other parks could be utilized by this ongoing
project and it will all be beneficial to any long term program we have.
Marge Crow gave a report on the moneys received to date from the Mid Cities
Recycling Center. The project was discussed to some length. Bob Perry said that
we need to improve our record keeping and he is working on some forms that will
allow Tim to keep a record of when loads are picked up and delivered.
Bruce Simpson has prepared an information booklet on general information for the
Recycle Center. Copies will be made available in the near future.
Bernina Deloach reported on the progress of the "Yard of the Month" judging. She
received relatively few responses to the letter she wrote and sent to apartment
complexes and has decided not to include them in our judging this year.
Any further suggestions for projects for the Committee to work on this next year
will be discussed at our next meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 P.M.
