Mr. Hart spoke briefly to the Committee expressing his appreciation of the beautification projects and expressed his desire that beautification remain a "top" priority on the list he presented to the City Council. He stressed the importance of this City becoming an organization of excellence and building our City reputation. Committee members responded with their appreciation to the City Manager and related that we were grateful for the full cooperation received from staff members and we we will continue to work closely with the City Manager, staff and employees toward our combined goals and objectives. Chairman Crow mentioned that she attended the dedication of the permanent Xmas Tree at Haltom City. She was impressed with the way she was received by the Mayor and beautifica- tion committee of that City. It was obvious to her that they were very intent in their efforts to win the Governor's Achievement Award this year and they have requested much information from us during the past year relative to our "Waste-in-Place" program and other award winning efforts. The minutes were corrected and approved. George McKinney requested the reports from committee members on the volunteer hours spent during the past month. This record is required for our entry. Bernina Deloach who is handling the "Yard of the Month" project, reported that the first letters were sent out to some 95 people who have entered this program to date. They will be judging the end of this month. The water bill printed a reminder of this project, thanks to our Water Dept. Winners will have a sign placed in their yard. Pictures will be taken and placed in the City Library by the 1st of the month. Certificates will be sent to all winners. This will be advertised in both the Mid Cities Daily News and the Northeast Extra Section of the Ft. Worth Star Telegram. A copy of the letter sent to participants will go to the scrapbook. Patsy Phillips reported that we now have $812.71 in our treasury. This does not include the $3000 Southwestern Bell Grant which will be applied to our Recycling Program or the $5000 we will received from the Water Bill donations. Discussion was held regarding the numerous expenditures we will be having to promote our recycling and beautification projects. We have a full schedule for the next two months and much will need to be done toward public awareness and recruiting more participation in our projects. Patsy will check into our membership with KTB, Inc. Bruce Simpson reported on the RECYCLING PROGRAM. He said the dumpsters were labeled and placed nicely along the fence at the Service Center. We almost have a load of news- ......, paper already. We are scheduled to open on April 4, 1989 and will be open Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. 'LLfeoo "We're Building a Beautiful Tomorrow" Page 2 - Minutes of Meeting Held March 20, 1989 (BEE) Discussion and concern was expressed regarding the need to contact churches,' business people and whether this was being adequately covered. Bruce indicated that he would discuss this with Dick Hight. Some 1000 flyers were to be obtained relative to this program. Discussion was held on types of material to be recycled. No carbons will be accepted on computer paper. Newspapers should be unbound or in brown paper bags. They did not want twine or wire in the bins. BOB PERRY will be the liaison between Bruce Simpson, the Committee, the Recycling Center, the employee hired and Randy Marsh and Waste Management. Marge reminded us that we need to assure that someone is contacting businesses and churches so that they can actively participate in this project. Rick Herold is arranging for the metal signs to be placed at the intersection of Hwy.#10 and Westpark Way and also adjacent to the Service Center so that citizens will know where to take the recyclable materials. Grand opening for the Recycling Center is scheduled for April 22, 1989. Marge mentioned that we have some media publicity and we are getting better coverage from the Mid Cities Daily News. George McKinney reported that he is working on a video whichincludes our various projects and the script is aimed at the Junior High level. This should be a good public awareness project. Marland Ernest mentioned that the trash-off is scheduled for April 1, 1989 at 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. We will all meet at the sundial at the Civic Center. A picnic will be held at afterwards at the Del Norte Park. The Recreation Department will host the picnic. Everybody is to bring their own camera for pictures of the trash-off since we will be at various locations. Marland discussed the progress of our proposed Christmas project for the Civic Center. It will take the help of all Committee members to make the displays and artwork. This project will be further discussed at the next meeting. Alice Ernest needs to have all pertinent information for the entry which is to be submitted in April. This is a tedious project an time consuming. Let's all assist as much as possible. Betty Yarbrough will be very busy compiling the scrapbook which will be submitted in conjunction with our entry. She too will need the assistance of Committee members. ALL MEMBERS MUST SUBMIT ALL THEIR VOLUNTEER HOURS AND ANY PICTURES, ARTICLES, ETC. TO BE INCLUDED IN OUR ENTRY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Discussion was held relative to the "How to Grow" show being presented by the Parks Dept. which will be held April 29, 1989 at the City complex. Displays for thebooth are to be made. Bob Phillips and Tim Hightshoe will make the booth. Bob Phillips and Helen Lightbody will work on materials to be handed out. Any promotional material will need to be made available by the 26th. Any suggestions or further ideas should be related to Bob Phillips as soon as possible. Bob Phillips showed us the pictures he had taken of the new berm. It was interesting to see the amount of work that went into preparation of soil, etc. prior to the planting and we are looking forward to having the official dedication for this project which is tentatively scheduled sometime in May. Marge Crow asked that all Committee members give some thought to what projects they would like us to pursue next year. Since we meet only once a month we need to program well ahead to allow time to accomplish our goals. The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 P.M.
