CONFERENCE MEETING HELD FEBRUARY 20,1989
gal 111' ROOM, CITY HALL, EULESS
ATTENDEES: Bob Perry, Bernina Deloach, Bruce Simpson, George McKinney,
Jay Heilman, Alice & Marland Ernest, Tim Hightshoe,
Helen Lightbody, Betty Yarbrough, and Marge Crow
Chairman Crow called the meeting to order. Minutes of the meeting held January 16,
1989 were approved. Record of volunteer hours for the previous month were turned
in to George McKinney.
The secretary reported that she received a response to her letter to Alcoa Aluminum
regarding their procedure for supplying boxes for collection of aluminum cans. She
requested information from the Committee as to the structure and responsibilities of
three different groups working on waste management. They are: Tarrant County Solid
Waste Advisory Board, Regional Solid Waste Management Planning (COG) , and Texas
Task Force on Waste Management.
Chairman Crow reported, in the absence of the Treasurer, that our current balance is
$995.04. This did not include the moneys to be received from the City or the moneys
from Southwestern Bell.
The official date of the "GREAT EULESS TRASH OFF" will be April 1, 1989. This will
be the same date as the "GREAT TEXAS TRASH OFF". A rain date is scheduled for April 8.
The annual "sparkle Week" will also be held during the month of April. The Mayor's
newsletter will be forthcoming shortly and will provide details on these activities.
We will meet at the City Hall at the SUNDIAL at 9:00 A.M. The trash pick-up will
*-...' last for two hours from 9:00 to 11:00 AM -- after which we will meet and Del Norte
Park for a picnic.
George McKinney reported that Franchot Thomas was working on a videl and is taping
various events as they occur and will be editing the tape later in the year. He
suggested that any projests we have that would be useful to this video be referred
to Franchot Thomas. This should prove to be a worthwhile promotional video.
George reported that the trees which were awarded to campuses were very successful.
Most schools had a special program. Texas Power & Light helped did a hole for the
planting of one tree. Schools were initiating their own litter programs. He said
that one school janitor commented that since they had their litter program, he had
more time to work on repairs at the school. One principal commented that there was
a noticeable difference in litter around the water fountain and rest rooms.
Alice Ernest said that she had been contacted by the Youth Director of the First
Baptist Church, Euless inquiring as to whether the "BEE" had a community type
project that could use some 300/400 junior and senior boys. The Committee decided
that they would be able to use them to pick up litter on Main Street and any other
heavy littered areas. If weather permitted some consideration was given to have
them weed the newly planted area on Highway 10. It was also suggested that this
project might be worthy for the video. This project would also be excellent for
our entry this year in the category of youth groups. Mrs. Ernest reminded the
Committee members that each has a copy of the entry form for the Governor's Achieve-
ment Award and she will need some assistance from each one for the portion for
which they are responsible.

Tim Hightshoe reported that signs, listing the volunteers on Main Streets.. have been "\
completed. He currently has 9 volunteers and is proposing to make up a flyer regard-
ing the project and hopes to keep in closer contact with the volunteers in order to
get some feedback.
Bernina Deloach announced that we will begin our "Yard of the Month" project in
April. It will be mentioned in the Mayor's Newsletter and hopefully will appear
on the water bill. Letters will be sent to those who have been participating.
A picture was circulated showing the tree being planted which was given by the
"BEE" to the City of Granbury.
Much discussion was held on how we would operate the Recycling Center. Jay Heilman
mentioned that the City would provide the payments until we exhaust the $3000 from
Southwestern Bell and then it would be more appropriate for the "BEE" to have its
own bank account. He also provided us with IRS papers necessary to become eligible
as a "charitable" group. Receipts are to be given to those bringing recycling
materials to the Service Center. He reported that the City of Bedford was presented
the same program by Randy Marsh and Waste Management will be providing them with
the same handling of recycled materials. A suggestion was made and approved by
the Committee that we get a stamp for the "BEE".
Bruce Simpson discussed with the Committee our current plans for the Recycling
Center. The Committee has decided to name the Center - the Mid Cities Recycling
Center. Many areas of the operation have not yet been determined, however, efforts
will be made in the next weeks to resolve some of the project's needs. Bruce will
be working to receive the boxes from Alcoa. A flyer was being prepared for the
project. Information will be contained in the Mayor's newsletter relative to
this project. Each committee member was reminded to CALL AT LEAST SIX PEOPLE
IN THE MID CITIES AREA TO ACQUAINT THEM WITH OUR RECYCLING PROJECT AND GET THEM
TO START SAVING CANS, NEWSPAPERS, AND GLASS. Much work will need to be done to
get this project off and running.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 P.M.
