Patsy & Bob Phillips, Dee & Jay Heilman,
James R. Hight, Helen Lightbody, Marge Crow, Betty Yarbrough,
Bruce Simpson and Bernina DeLoach
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Alice Ernest. She welcomed Mrs. Bernina
DeLoach our new member and was pleased that she will assume the responsibility of
the "Yard of the Month" project. Alice also mentioned that four certificates of
appreciation were presented by the Mayor at the past council meeting for the
beautification efforts in the Woodlands area. Some 417 trees were planted as
a result of this project.
Discussion was held regarding the "Great Euless Trash Off" which was held in
conjunction with the "Great Texas Trash Off". Many favorable comments were made
regarding the City Staff's participation and the work done by the Park Department
on Minters Chapel. It was suggested that next year an effort be made to contact
businesses, churches and schools, such as Trinity High, to get them also involved
in this program.
The Secretary reported that besides typing the minutes and agenda, a letter of thanks
was forwarded to the many City Staff participants and other who worked toward
making the trash off successful.
The Treasurer reported that $240.28 was spent during the past month for a plaque
and supplies. We now have a balance of $4583.60.
Dotty McKinney collected the volunteer hours for the month and provided us with
another excellent dessert.
George McKinney was not present but related to the Chairman that cards had been
printed to be presented to the students who completed the "Waste in Place" course.
George also mentioned that some 5000 trash bags will be given to students on the
last day of school to help them carry their papers and personal belongings home.
Nine out of seventeen principals and over 4000 students are currently interested
and participating in the "Pride in Your School" project.
Bruce Simpson reported on the recycling and as yet we are not certain as to what
type program we will have, however, Bruce will continue to work in this area and
we hope to have some workable program in the near future. Recycling will be a
major effort not only by City of Euless but nationally as landfill areas become
more scarce.
Bob Phillips reported on the tree planting at Lakewood Elementary which they
provided. He assisted them in the planting and discussed with the students the
planting procedure. The Tree City USA flag was flown at the school for one day.
Bob mentioned that he is still working on plans on the Airport Freeway and that
some additional papers needed to be filled out.
He now has a sign on the mobile unit he uses to collect trash on Hwy.#10 which
indicates "Euless, We're Building a Beautiful City". This is a good promotional
effort for the "BEE". Mr. John Ault has kindly volunteered to keep up the

petunia planters at Hwy. 157 and Airport Freeway. Another volunteer, Beth Goodlepp
of 213 Yorkshire was contacted by Dick Hight. She has volunteered to work in any
area. We need more volunteers to replace those who have moved or are no longer
able to participate. Discussion was held relative to providing the Welcome Wagon
with our "BEE" brochures.
Dee Heilman was requested to get pictures of the "Yard of Month" winners and
Certificates of Appreciation will be given to the winners. A small display will be
provided in the Library.
Discussion was held regarding registration and attendance at the KTB, Inc. seminar
to be held in July. Marland Ernest made a motion that $1200 be provided for
expenses to Galveston for active committee members attending. The motion was
seconded by Marge Crow. The motion was carried.
We have an active youth group - Troop #894. Not only did they participate in
the trash off but their leader is very conscientious about our program efforts.
Dick Hight reported to the Committee on the 10K to be held on Memorial Day.
This event will be sponsored by Whataburger and other sponsors. Signs will be
provided for other sponsors and discussion was held as to "BEE" participating
in this effort. Signs cost $25.
Marland Ernest reported that he has been attending meetings of the Solid Waste ‘41
Disposal Board which meets every 4th Thursday of each month at 5:30 PM at Coors.
A hot line has been set up so that citizens can report anyone seen dumping
trash illegally.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 P.M.
