Hight, Bernina DeLoach, Helen Lightbody, Marge Crow, and Bruce Simpson The meeting was called to order by Chairman Alice Ernest. Mrs. DeLoach was introduced to the Committee. We look forward to her continued interest and participation with the "BEE". A motion was made and seconded that the minutes of the previous meeting be approved as written. The motion was carried. Record of volunteer hours for the past month were turned in and a brief explanation of our procedure in accounting for these hours was given by the Chairman. The Secretary reported that she had written letters to the volunteers of Highway #10 flower beds instructing them to work their beds and inviting them to participate in our "Great Euless Trash Off" April 23, 1988 from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. , after which we would meet at the Simmons Recreation Center for ice cream. A similar letter was sent to the "Adopt Main Street" volunteers. The secretary provided copies of all the letters sent including a copy of a letter written by George McKinney to all principals of Hurst and Bedford Elementary Schools which related to the "Pride in School" program being initiated in Euless. They were invited to join us in this program. The awards will be given around "Arbor Day" in January, however, we would like the program to be a continuing one throughout the school year. Certificates of Appreciation were received, signed and officially sealed for the four citizens recommended last month for their work toward beautification and planting of trees in their areas. Copies of all correspondencewas provided for review and a copy will be provided for the scrapbook. The Treasurer reported that we had expenses of $168.49 and also had a credit deposit of $48.00 and $88.00 for the past month. This leaves us a balance of $4823.88. GREAT EULESS TRASH OFF: Jay Heilman reported that after the Staff Meeting, a memo was forwarded to all Department Heads relative to the involvement of City employees in our trash off 4/23/88. Work areas and locations were provided and the Recreation Dept. will be serving ice cream after the pickup at 11:00 A.M. The Chairman mentioned that Jay has done a good job of getting employee participation. A proclamation was presented from the Mayor, Harold Samuels proclaiming April 23rd as "Great Euless Trash Off" day from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. and urged all citizens to participate and support the community. New releases were submitted to the local papers by Ann Hajak. Prizes: Discussion regarding the method of awarding some 25 T-Shirts, which were ordered specifically for this trash-off, was held and it was decided that while it would be desirable to award them according to the ones making the best efforts toward picking up trash the time frame would not allow us to do so. We decided instead in favor of awarding the prizes according to the oldest person collecting L trash, the youngest person, the most unusual item collected, the longest distance *'ltie00 "We're Building a Beautiful Tomorrow" Page 2 of Minutes of Meeting held April 18, 1988 travelled to participate in this trash-off, etc. The Chairman reported that Dotty McKinney was having surgery. We all wish Dotty a speedy recovery. Marge Crow requested that pictures be turned in to her with proper names and date on the reverse side. A copy of the Mayor's Proclamation will also be provided for the scrapbook. Bob Phillips brought in some litter bags and golf caps which we have available for distribution. He also wore a T-Shirt which displayed the "BEE" on the front and mentioned that a screen was also available with "Don't Mess With Texas" and suggested this could be used on the back of the shirt. Discussion was held on the cost, colors, and quantities needed to order for prices. The Committee has a definite need for promotional items and suggestions were made as to different areas they would be useful in promoting public awareness. It was also suggested that perhaps we could get some sponsors for these items similar to the shirts provided by Whataburger for the Lion's 10K event. Mr. Phillips presented a landscape plan for the corner of Airport Freeway and Ector which would hide the ARCO lines on City Hall property. He had plans of metal edging with trees in the background and red tip photenias, Indian Hawthorne and Liriope in the foreground. The bed should require fairly low maintenance and could be irrigated. More research will be made as to what extent the Lone Star Gas Company will become involved in this project and what costs the project will entail. Mr. Phillips also showed a drawing for the proposed landscaping project which would make a statement to the citizens of Euless and visitors reflecting our $60,000 winning in the Governor's Community Achievement Program last year. Discussion was held on types of plants, potential of a burm, etc. The Committee members felt that a burm would be more effective in making the desired statement. Trees and shrubs if desired, could be added later if funds allow. This will be researched in more detail and must be approved both by the Highway Department and "BEE". Bruce Simpson gave an update of his recycling research. He has talked with Am Can regarding their program. They have some 30 machines in different areas. Bruce is also going to check out the recycling program that the City of Plano has. We feel that with continued research we will come up with a program that will be feasible and attractive to the City of Euless. Dick Hight reported on the progress of their reviewing the use of some land south of Highway #10. This area will be researched further. Dick is also going to call certain people for inviting them to our meetings. We need more members to help with the workload and to keep our program progressing in a positive direction. If anyone knows of any people who would be interested in joining this Committee please contact Dick Hight with the information and he will follow-up on inviting them to participate. Jay Heilman mentioned that Mike Evans Ministries is proposing to add parking spaces to their area and will be filling in the area behind the post office. He felt that some of the area being expanded toward Ector would be more attractive if some sort of planting or burm were placed in front of the area to hide the large asphalt area. This is a timely effort for beautification in this area. This will be further researched. by Bob Phillips. The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
