E . Scott , James and Ruth Hight , Betty Yarbrough Absent were Marland Ernest and Helen Lightbody who had a conflicting meeting with the Park Dept . The meeting was called to order by Chairman Alice Ernest and new members and guests were introduced . The new members gave a brief resume of their background and interest in this Committee and in turn the members related their background and responsibilities within the Group . We are pleased to see new members added and look forward to expanding further as the year and activities progress . A lot has been accomplished in the small time we have been organized and with new people coming aboard we anticipate even better results . The minutes of the meeting held in August , 1987 were read . A motion was made by George McKinney and seconded by Carolyn Park that the minutes be approved. The motion was carried unanimously. Dottie McKinney called for volunteer hours from the members . Chairman Ernest explained for the benefit of the new members and guests the need and method of keeping a record of our volunteer hours . Treasurer ' s report was given by Patsy Phillips . We had a balance of $1567.02 as of last month and we decided, voted and approved the purchase of additional "Waste-in Place" books for the HEB School District . A total of $1275.00 was spent on the books leaving a balance of $292. 02 . Alice Ernest also mentioned that $5000 from the Community Betterment Fund was authorized for the "BEE" 1987 operating fund . Committee Reports : Gary Barber reported on the Storybook Fair . Due to weather our "BEE" display which was engineered by Marland Ernest shared the table with Southwest Bell Telephone inside the gym. However , on Sunday the display was moved outside to the ticket counter for better visibility . Suggestions were made for further improvement of our display so that it could be presented at more functions for public awareness . Gary mentioned that they were working on a 10K run and chili cookoff which would have representation from each City (Hurst,Euless and Bedford) . Carolyn Park mentioned that Glenn Walker had provided 2500 "BEE" brochures for us at no cost . We were getting quite low in our supply . We truly appreciated this contribution from our Mayor Pro Tem. She gave some statistics on our "Waste-in Place" program. It started just some three years ago and moved slowly and progressed rather rapidly because of the hard work of Carolyn and George McKinney providing seminars , inservice training and today each Lead teacher in our HEB School District will have her own book. It is a permanent part of the school curriculum, teaching from the kindergarten thru the sixth grade. We really accomplished a L lot with this program and it will be in effect for years to come . U&, o "We're Building a Beautiful Tomorrow" Page 2 Minutes of Meeting held September 21 , 1987 "BEE" Discussion was held on the Recycling Program that Mr. A. D. Averitt presented at our last 'ieting. It appears the location of K-Mart will not be an available site to park the \..sailer. Several other sites were mentioned and will be pursued these next few weeks. Alice Ernest submitted five ideas from the "BEE" Euless to be used for the "40 Great Ideas" published annually by the KTB, Inc. Marge Crow was not available but had requested that a newspaper clippings be retained for our scrapbook. We all do not get the same papers and do need to have the articles, especially the papers that she does not personally subscribe to. Publicity in this respect is vital to our scrapbook and entries. At this point, Marland Ernest and Helen Lightbody returned to the meeting, since the work- shop at the Parks Dept. was concluded. Alice Ernest introduced the absentee members. Bob Phillips reported on Tree Landscaping and said his son was assisting and working on slides and was preparing a computerized display of landscaping he was proposing at Hwy. 21 between Ector and Highway 157. No other sites were discussed at this time. Carolyn Park reported on two meetings she attended by a group being promoted by the COG, Arlington. This group is called Resource Conservation Council and includes members County-wide and State-wide. First meeting was entitled "First Texas Urban Forestry Conference and included a presentation by the Director of Tourism in Washington, D.C. KTB, Inc. also was on the agenda. She mentioned some cities have a position entitled City Forester and she will be keeping us abreast of the activities of this Council and has accepted the position of Vice Chairman. Marland Ernest reported on a Tarrant County Waste-In-Place Committee which functions through the Commissioners' Court. Carolyn related that the thing that impressed her most with these meetings was that there are many entities present and all working toward the same purposes we are. `ie summed it up that cleanliness relates to beautification and beautification encourages w-tourism, etc. There are some small areas being explored such as handling of grease from grease traps and handling chemical waste from businesses. Althea Staks will not be an active member but wants to continue receiving minutes and we will keep her informed. She is teaching, still leading a campfire group and is President,Towri &• Country Garden Club this year. Alice Ernest also mentioned that we need a new publicity member, since Carolyn Park has taken on more responsibilities on a county-wide/state-wide level and her liaison efforts will be vital to our organization. The chairman also requested that we look into a skit/monologue/two-person type presentation to be used when the "BEE" costume is worn. Gary Barber indicated that he would check some areas for this and would coordinate with the group. This would be effective since just wearing the costume doesn't really relate the purpose we are attempting to associate it with. Discussion was held on having a Barbeque (our annual award) for Highway #10 volunteers and also perhaps including the Main Street volunteers. The program was tentatively scheduled at 6:00 PM on October 10 at the Bear Creek Park Pavillion. Letters of invitation will be forwarded to the volunteers. Discussion was also held on a meeting with the CR Team of Southwestern Bell at Midway Park at 9:00 A.M. October 3, 1987. The team will also view the Greenhouse owned and operated by the City of Euless. Page 3 - Minutes of Meeting held September 21, 1987 "BEE" Discussion was held on material available for new posters that would be at a nomimal cost. Other sources of help and suggestions were presented by the members of the Committee. We are elated that with new members we also get new ideas amd all is most worthwhile to accomplish our goals. A motion was made by Marland Ernest and seconded by George McKinney that we purchase a tape recorder for the use of the "BEE". The motion was approved unanimously. Helen Lightbody, Corresponding Secretary will have the responsibility to purchase this unit and it will be used where the needs are by the "BEE" committee. The meeting was adjournced at 10:00 P.M.
